Topic: After Effects (Blood + Explosions)

Hi fellow Brickfilmers,
I am currently in the process of creating a physiological horror brickfilm and I want to add Blood that looks nice , and doesn't look like it was made in Ms paint. If anyone knows how this can be achieved can you please tell me?
I am also looking for an after effects program that is free and can be used to create fire/explosion effects?

I am using a Macbook running OS 10.9.5 but I can Also run Windows applications in Parallels Desktop.

(Please note: By Free i mean legitimately Free , I am not looking to pirate software)

Many Thanks

If there really is nothing good for free , i guess I can budget up from £30 - £40 ( £50 at an absolute push).

Re: After Effects (Blood + Explosions)

Blood is gross, but if you insist, I recommend doing it in-camera so you cannot ruin it with MS paint or have to rely on effects. Try clay, or a piece off saran plastic wrap colored red. Really red. You'll have to use a red sharpie and go to town on that saran wrap, but it should probably look good if it's thoroughly colored.

I cannot help you with an effects program, because I have not found one myself. I use Blender, though, which is more of a 3D modeling software where you have to do everything manually and there are not may presets like smoke and fire and such.

Re: After Effects (Blood + Explosions)

Yep, as much as I dislike having blood in films, I will say that in-camera is the way to go.
OlsonStudios uses some sort of jelly/jam mixture and it looks about as realistic as you can get. Clay looks silly, and it's super-hard to animate it like a liquid. Red Sharpie on the figure can work to some extent, but it's not that great.

Dittos to the above two.  I prefer my bloodless action flicks, but do it in camera.  The worst thing you can do is use a cgi splatter effect.  I'd go for clay, mixing red with some darker color, probably some black.  I haven't mixed clay in some years.

You can buy red pens and extract the ink from it.
Lee Hardcastle uses clay and ink in his animation. I think clay looks to cartoony and ink looks too watery. The combination of ink and clay works really nicely.
If you don't know who Lee Hardcastle is, then I recommend you to watch some of his videos.

Its got a bit of swearing in it though. Enjoy.

my dad doesn't want me to brickfilm on because it's his computer, but he's not home right now at the moment.

Re: After Effects (Blood + Explosions)

My sister is pretty good at special effects makeup. She made blood once with ketchup, food coloring and corn syrup. Never again, stuff smelled awful under the lights. So don't do that. mini/smile

Re: After Effects (Blood + Explosions)

If you use blood, try making a coagulated solution-clay and/or MSPaint jobs look cheesy.

ow about trying to use dark red Lego tiles? The crimson kind?

Anyway, good luck.

Re: After Effects (Blood + Explosions)

My personal favorite is a 1x1 round or square, clear, red LEGO plate. It leaves you with a clean all LEGO feel that doesn't gross potential viewers out, it's also is a lot less messy to work with. You can add as much as you want if you are willing to do a bit of layering and masking.

My last video used this type of blood in it, you can check it out by clicking my below signature picture. Unfortunately it does not have blood in action, but the video I am working on has it, and I love the way it looks.
