Topic: How can I achieve a Glow/Light effect? (E.G) Button flashing or glowin

Hey there guys,

Was wondering if anyone can please help me out, in achieving a Glowing/lighting up effect for e/g; A button is clicked. Or a radar is switched on, an alarm went off.

Also How can I achieve a Torch light effect, on AE? (If you can just give me a brief explanation that would be great as I am still at the a basic level on AE, but understand some of the concepts).

Sincerely,
Divine.

Re: How can I achieve a Glow/Light effect? (E.G) Button flashing or glowin

For the torch light, I recommend Going to Layer - New solid - Make it white. After that press the little eye next to the layer of the new solid. Take the mask / pin tool. Mask the shape of the light, Then after you complete that open the layer, go to masks, turn the opacity down and the feather really far up after that I recommend getting an optical flare from video copilot and attach to the end of the torchlight. (I'm not sure how this will look since I've never tried) Hope this helped mini/smile

If you haven't already animated it, a much better thing to do would be to put a flashlight behind the wall and have the light shine through a hole in the alarm thingy and actually light it up.  This should generally make the scene look better.

If you do it in post, you'll miss all of the great details like the coloured light reflecting off of the characters and objects in the scene.

@dt98films, Thanks for the enlighting comment. Funny that you say you haven't done it mini/lol I'll be sure to try it, never really used the layer or feather/opacity tool as far as I am aware on AE. So I'll look forward to trying it, just one question I think you forgot to cover was the tracking motion? How can I achieve this especially if someone is walking with the torch? So the light/optical flare always stays right on the spot of the torch?

@Squid, Hey man thanks for the great suggestion. I have heard about these things and think it's pretty interesting I'll have to try it some time the only concern for me is where can I get lights this small? Would I need led lighting? Or is there specific lights for lego? I'd love to know, if you have any idea on the matter. Thanks.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Sincerely,
Divine.

You can get LifeLites, which are specifically geared towards lighting LEGO models, but any small LEDs should do fine.

Here's the LifeLites site. Galactic Bricks just bought some, and they're working out well for him. I've seen some footage from his upcoming Avengers brickfilm and the lighting is pretty sick.

.

To keep it on the torch click the torch layer, open it in your timeline and go to position. After that keyframe it through the timeline to try and stay with the torch mini/smile

Hope I helped

Re: How can I achieve a Glow/Light effect? (E.G) Button flashing or glowin

Hey Jampot,

Thanks for the link to LifeLites it reminds me of once seeing them ages ago, but honestly forgot all about them! Really appreciate the response! I'll deffs look into it. Thanks bud.

Hey Dt98films,
I just want to ask, as I am a little confused. Now when you say open it up in your timeline are you referring to the white Solid? Or is it something else? I will provide images below so you can examine the situation better.

Now I have done everything you said, in regards to upping the feathing, lowering the opacity all the way, and creating the shape of the light (Which I used the pen tool, as I didn't know how to ''mask'' or pin it? I tried the pin tool thats next to the eraser tool but that just rotated my whole composition mini/lol)

Anyhow, now I put an optical flare in and everything but my next question is, how do I track it? As in the buttons and which torch layer your referring too? If you look on the pics I hope it'll be able to better determine my situation.

You mask the solid. after that you click the eye again so it shows and it should brighten it up a bit.
For tracking the flare, tick the clock on position and keyframe it through

For the blinking phone light in Unrenewable, I shined a flashlight onto the transparent piece and masked that into the shot. My feeling is that something with an authentic light source looks more convincing than just brightening something up in After Effects or whatnot.

Re: How can I achieve a Glow/Light effect? (E.G) Button flashing or glowin

Hey Dt98films,

I did attempt this for unfortunetly it did not work out, I couldn't find the clock for some reason, but despite that after it was masked it wasn't getting brighter. Oh well that's alright something I hope to figure out someday/sometime. Thanks anyhow bud!

Hey Smeagol,
Thanks for the tip and info! Unrenewable is and always was a masterpiece and one of those true legendary brickfilms. I'll keep your tips in mind as I progress my knowledge through AE, thanks anyhow bud!
