Topic: Brick built FX

Ok so for my upcoming brickfilm I want to use as many brick built FX as possible. E.g. explosions, gunfire, regulars,  ec......
Because I want it to look more like The LEGO Movie. So my question is 1: should I even do that and use brick built FX and 2: if I do brick built FX like a gunfire, should everything else that has a Lego piece (like lightning or fire) be done that way? Because using lit up Lego fire would look cool, but I can't say the same for Lego lightning. So please let me know what you think guys. mini/smile

LEGO lightning would be wicked cool.

Re: Brick built FX

But the lightning piece is too wide, it would look weird. mini/confused

Re: Brick built FX

Nah, don't make lightning out of the single LEGO lightning piece, build a big tower of white pieces shaped like lightning and shine a light on it.

Re: Brick built FX

I don't have any clear white bricks. Do you think I should just do it in CG? Now that I think about it did they even use the lightning piece in the Lego Movie?

Re: Brick built FX

You don't need clear pieces, opaque white bricks will do just fine. If the background is dark, you should be able to illuminate the white pretty well on its own. Though clear white bricks would look great.

Re: Brick built FX

I'll try that tommrow and report back if it worked. Thanks for all the suggestions. mini/smile

Re: Brick built FX

Maybe even use clear blue pieces?  And I make i-screen airborne effects two ways: 1) attach a post between a flying object and a wall, or 2: use clear bricks or the 1x2x2 panels beneath the flying object.

Re: Brick built FX

I don't quite follow you HoldingOurOwn. But I think your saying that I should use a baseplate for a background and attach the lightning that way. If so, I don't use baseplates for my backgrounds so that wouldn't work.

Re: Brick built FX

Do everything brick built, that would be cool. I think more people should use all brick built effects, I think they look much better than the frankly low quality of vfx seen most of the time in brickfilms. Even if it looks a little hoaky, it will have oodles of charm, and will look good as intended, as opposed to vfx lightning which probably won't look that great.
