Topic: Sony/Fox/Disney

You see these three film studios together, you know I'm talking about Marvel. This weekend, something big happened regarding Fantastic Four. Marvel decided to cancel the fantastic four comics currently running. Apparently, it is to hurt the upcoming fantastic four film next year.

http://comicbook.com/blog/2014/05/30/ma … plausible/

Apparently, the popularity of Quicksilver in Xmen Days of future past isn't making marvel too happy, and because of the fact the film didn't really make any merch and toys to advertise, their box office victory makes it more embarrassing for marvel.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as you know, disappointed many. Sony is in some trouble with money, and the amount that the spidey films are bringing in isn't helping matters. So now, there are rumors that Disney and Sony will co-finance the spidey films, with spidey maybe appearing in the avengers.

Thoughts on this?

Re: Sony/Fox/Disney

I'm glad fox is beating disney.  I'm not a huge fan of the house of mouse and was hoping quicksilver would be cool enough to make viewers question him in the avengers.  (I still need to see days of future past)

Sony, they are going to sell the rights to disney in the next 2-3 movies.  They are trying to put off the inevitable.  Messing up the Sinister Six movie might be the last straw.

The comic situation is smart, but ruthless at the same time.  I can't blame disney for that.

Re: Sony/Fox/Disney

Fantastic Four hasn't been a particularly strong seller for a while. Sales spiked the month the series was rebooted, and then promptly dropped back to dismal levels in the months following. I wouldn't put it past Marvel to leverage the comics to hurt a film competitor, but the fate of the series was probably up for grabs regardless.

The average viewer is very familiar with the extremely popular characters of QuickSilver and Scarlet Witch, and would be very unhappy if Disney messed up their well known and highly explored mythos, cherished by generations.

In all seriousness, Fox and Sony really aren't any sort of threat to Marvel Studios/Disney right now. Regardless of how many films Quicksilver is in, Avengers 2 will still rek everybody at the box office next year and leave the Fantastic Four/ whatever else comes out next year peeing on the bushes outside the movie theater.

Not that I have any problem with that, though I'd actually prefer if they still stayed around and held onto the IPs that they have, as I feel like keeping those forces Marvel to use some of their lesser known properties (GotG, AntMan maybe, etc.) instead of just banking on Spidey/X-Men for forever.

But I'd still bet we're going to get at least one more Amazing Spider Man before there is a possibility of stuff changing hands.

Re: Sony/Fox/Disney

Marvel will finally have their way with the Avengers in the MCU if they get Spidey. He appears in the Avengers comics, so I wouldn't be surprised if Disney did something with him if and when they get the rights to him. It really depends if they want to pay Sony any royalties, or if they think a license deal would cut it for them.

As for the X-Men, it's the only other Marvel franchise that comes close to the MCU. Spidey didn't do so well because he can't really expand so far in his own universe. X-Men, and the Avengers are both teams that can have lots of spin-offs.

I don't see Fox giving up X-Men.

DC can't get a TV/cinematic universe together, Marvel can't merge its multi-cinematic universes together.  Potato, tomato.

Re: Sony/Fox/Disney

I want Fox to continue with X-Men because DoFP and First Class were extremely good, and The Wolverine was alright, so the series is going up in my books. Plus, I want to see what happens with Apocalypse. However, I don't want a Fantastic Four movie by Fox, since they said the two series would become one universe. Fantastic Four belong with Spider-man, if anything.

Back when The Avengers was being made, there were rumours that Sony and Marvel were going to do a deal of some sort to get Spider-man in the movie. Though the accuracy is debatable, those rumours weren't unfounded, and I think I read something by Fiege a while back that said he would still be open to the inclusion of Spider-man. If Sony have to co-finance with Disney/Marvel, that's fine by me. I think a Tony Stark/Peter Parker dynamic would be fantastic. In terms of continuity, the two film franchises would fit quite snugly (I won't get into that now, it's a whole new level or nerd and I have an exam in a few hours). BTW I really enjoyed Amazing Spider-man 2, despite its obvious faults.

As for Avengers crossing over with X-Men...I'm glad they're two separate film universes. Each one is just too big to include the other, and especially with X-Men, the independant development does the series wonders.

@Lech, the DC thing is a whole other story. Warner is floundering in the mud like a Magikarp because they refuse to take the comics as they are. Despite the popularity of ridiculous superheroes like Thor, Mystique and the upcoming Rocket Raccoon and Groot, DC thinks that a mainstream audience isn't ready for the likes of Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter. With Goyer writing, their films are just getting more and more superficial and hyperserious, and they're almost ashamed of the material that they have to work with. My hopes are now on Flash, that that and Constantine will be good. I'm less optimistic about Man of Steel II, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for now.

Pity they can't be called by their names or even referred to as mutants in the Avengers, but this was really interesting to see.

Re: Sony/Fox/Disney

I though they could still be called Pietro and Wanda Maximoff as well as their superhero names, but it was just that Avengers can't reference them as mutants. Presumably

Spoiler (click to read)

their powers are now either derived from Loki's scepter, or they're Inhumans like Skye and Raina probably are in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Re: Sony/Fox/Disney

So if Disney can use them, then who's to say they can't use other characters from X-Men, but not call them mutants?

Film rights can be so confusing sometimes. I guess that's why we have lawyers.

Mainly because Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are in the Avengers in several of the Marvel comics.

Re: Sony/Fox/Disney

I'd like to see more of the other characters get some spotlight.  I'm sick of Wolverine...

Wolverine is my second most favourite Marvel character next to Captain America. I think that he's great on the movies, Hugh does a great job acting him.

Re: Sony/Fox/Disney

Sony and Disney talked about civil war. A shame it couldn't happen.

I guess we can pretty much just talk about these studios upcoming projects, so here's one:(Not the best idea)

Re: Sony/Fox/Disney

The spoiler is mainly about comics and not the movies.

Spoiler (click to read)

why would marvel make more wolverine and xmen movies if Logan in dead. Marvel comics brought Peter Parker back when the Amazing Spider-Man 2. Do you think that'll happen for wolverine?

I'm sick of superhero movies and don't care what the latest developments with them are. While I go see quite a few of them and they're occasionally enjoyable, I believe superhero stories are to film and comic books what Lay's Potato Chips are to food, and I think their prevalence in Hollywood right now is destructive to filmmaking as an industry and art form. It's movies like these that lead to the "it's just a movie!" attitude some use to dismiss flaws in films, or suggest they shouldn't be taken "too" seriously.

That being said, there's been some fascinating stuff from the Sony leak. It's mindblowing how vicious and childish some of the higher-ups at Sony are in their email correspondences. Not sure how I feel about reading up on it given that the only reason we have this information is because hackers from North Korea stole it, but it's hard to look away.

Smeagol, venting hard. mini/tongue

Joking aside, I feel the same way, at least to a degree.  The mainstream film world is so saturated with superhero movies that no ones taking the time to make anything else; and it feels like my favorite type of movie, single, stand alone new IP films with no attachment to prequels, sequels, and other forms of media, are few and far between these days.

Can't say I'm sorry for Sony anyhow, considering they are the ones who screwed up Spiderman.

Re: Sony/Fox/Disney

I personally love these leaked emails. It's like something from The Thick Of It, and I now really want to see someone make a TV-show similar to The Office - only called 'The Studio' and it's a fake-documentary about film executives. I'm sure that in a few decades time people will hail it as a comedic masterpiece that captures the fall of the hollywood blockbuster perfectly.

Make sure to credit me...

I won't disappoint you, Max. I'll get started on that immediately after I've made my Academy Award-winning biopic drama about Guns N Roses, with Brad Pitt and Rupert Everett as Axl Rose and Slash, respectively. They shall win Best Actor and Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

I shall call it A Rose By Any Other Name...
