Topic: Bad News! :(

I suffered a hard drive crash; it was a new computer that was only 3 months old!  Even though I made backups up until 2 weeks before the crash, the dvd with most of the work is missing from my backup collection!  It's been about 3 weeks or so since the crash, but technicians were trying to recover the files but couldn't.  This means that about 1/2 of episode 3 will have to be reshot.  With the summer season upon us, this gives me little time to animate, and although I am resolute, it will be a while before episode 3 is released.  My sincerest apologies go to the very talented voice actors, who I know would love to see their talents realized.

And please, backup your files frequently, and make more than 1 copy!

Re: Bad News! :(

Sorry to here that! It's too bad they can't recover the data. mini/sad
I recently had a hard drive die on me, but thankfully had backed-up everything a few hours before.

Don't get discouraged, I know this means a lot of extra work, but life sometimes does that.
Also, being a new computer, is it still under warranty? It can't recover your data, but they should replace that hard drive as three months is awful quick for something like that to go out.

Re: Bad News! :(

This is terrible. Sorry, man. I know how hard you have been working on this. But, this could be a good time. Maybe, you'll create something that's better than the original. Sky's the limit.

Re: Bad News! :(

Ouch.

Consider backing up to a cloud service (drop box/Google etc) if size limits and performance is not an issue.  I wouldn't use those services for private information but I think they work well for a few thousand zipped up images/frames.  It also opens up options for collaboration if someone joins your team.

Dang, that sucks. I know how you feel, I was recreating a scene from Doctor Who and mostly everything is gone cause of a hard drive crash.

Re: Bad News! :(

I am so sorry!  Don't worry about the delay.  We all understand.  Just take your time and, as funmi said, you may like the second version even more than the first.  I'm sure we'll all enjoy it no matter when it comes out.

Re: Bad News! :(

So sorry about that, HOO. I hope you can get through this.

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

Re: Bad News! :(

The same thing happened to me with my Jango Fett video. Really sorry for you man. mini/sad

Re: Bad News! :(

Thanks for everyone's support.  the warranty doesn't cover data and of course that's more valuable to me than a new hard drive.  I reshot the mailman scene this morning before heading to work, which is about 4% of the video.  I am considering dropbox as an additional backup medium, but since this production is 7 to 8000 images at 1 meg each (tge episodes I do are 20+ min), I don't know how much data can be held.

Re: Bad News! :(

Dropbox gives you 2GB for free, which probably isn't enough. Google Drive, however, has 15GB of free storage space, and you can actually upgrade to 100GB for $2 a month.

Re: Bad News! :(

mini/sad Sorry to hear that.

Re: Bad News! :(

That's terrible, I hope you can either recover the files or have very smooth filming for the rest of the episode. It is a really good idea to purchase an external hard drive or some DVDs to back up files such as these, just in case this happens again. mini/wink

Re: Bad News! :(

I actually backed up most of this onto DVD, but one of the discs has been missing!  I will get the dropbox account and store files until they are securely backed up.

Re: Bad News! :(

Man thats terrible and especially for a computer thats only 3 months old wow man, you must have been really shocked and upset considering the situation and given circumstances. What I was wondering is why they couldn't recover all your data? That sounds very unusual. I had a situation where my laptop fell into a bath destroyed the whole computer however I managed to save all the data. Thank God.

I'm sure there is a reason for your case just sorry to hear you were unlucky it always happens to the best of us.

I wish you God speed on your re-shooting hopefully it'll be better than the original man I actually watched a few episodes you got some funny stuff going on and great VA man I applaud you for that.

Sincere regards,
Divine.

Re: Bad News! :(

They couldn't recover ANY data.  I made backups but the one DVD with all the most recent (and the most difficult) work is just lost!
