OMG Go Danny!

Re: The Game of Thrones Discussion Thread

I'm trying to catch up to the series, and I've just started the book. (I'm currently at the beginning of season 3)

I have to say, the third episode of the third season is probably the all-time worst. The music at the end

Spoiler (click to read)

when Jaime loses his hand

is extremely out of place and too abrupt.

Re: The Game of Thrones Discussion Thread

Yeah, I just re-watched it and a song like that should never be used in these series lol, but did you think the episode was just the worst overall or is it only because of the song?

Haha, yeah I think the song really ruined it for me at the end, because the episode itself wasn't that bad. The little story with Podrick is just awkward, even if it's only meant for comedic relief. I doubt it's anything else, unless he can save Westeros with his magic.... ability.

Re: The Game of Thrones Discussion Thread

Unfortunately, I found out about a week before hand. Fortunately, I did not know it was coming so soon and in that particular scene.

It was a fantastic scene though, and an excellent episode all around. No wonder George R. R Martin chose to write that one.

That's what has been playing in my head since that scene, and boy does it sound absolutely glorious!

Noooo! Bisexual Inigo Montoya is dead! And he died in probably the most painful way.

It is me, or were both Bisexual Inigo Montoya and Sansa's Aunt's deaths a bit...meme-y. I'm pretty sure everyone yelled "THIS. IS. WESTEROS" at the end of last episode - and now everyone must be yelling "FATALITY"

Not that I'm complaining. I loved the last two episodes. Its just I hope they stop this before the series becomes too much like the Final Destination franchise. But next episode is 'The Battle For The Wall' - where I predict a crapload of deaths.

Like all bandwagons, I've hopped onto Game of Thrones about halfway through its journey. The word 'Tolkein-esque Fantasy' is like 'Michael Bay-esque Action' in that it utterly repells me. But this show actually gives the fantasy genre a much needed boost. We still live in a world locked in the same psuedo-medieval time-peorid all fantasy takes place in, no-one has heard of the word 'Democracy,' I can't pronounce anyones name correctly, and there are still racial stereotypes. But I like how the dwalf is literally a man with vertical impairment, Elves are just albinos, gay people actually exist for once, and the moral ambiguity is so refreshing. Tywin Lannister is supposed to be this evil puppetmaster...but I actually kind of like him. Tyrion is the most popular character of the show, yet he's on the 'wrong' side. The Jon Snow storyline seems to be the least-favourite among fans, which is ironic since its by far the most conventional of the show.

Haven't read the books. I'm not actually sure if I want to, just because it looks like the sort of long-winded fantasy I despise. I think the TV format adds life to the whole thing - and it also reminds me of I, Claudius in a really, really good way.

I haven't seen the show, but the books are fantastic.

Re: The Game of Thrones Discussion Thread

OH MY GOD THAT WAS AWESOME!

I was worried when I found out that Episode 9 was going to be entirely devoted to Jon Snow (who I like...I just don't like him as much as all the other storylines) and it was going to be this massive battle. Its odd that I consider the action to be the most boring part of this show, but I think its the same reason why I fast-forward through the sex - because the plot kinda stops whenever it happens. People begin to swordfight or bonk, and I'm like "Right! I'll just let you two get that out of your systems. Shout when narrative starts again, OK?

But...this was just awesome. It was really out of tone for the series, but I don't care. I loved this episode.

Also, now I know that when UKIP wins the election and our dystopian future is upon us - I will turn to the kitchen staff to lead the great rebellion.

Re: The Game of Thrones Discussion Thread

Agreed, probably my favorite from the season! Everything was just totally awesome and fitting together well. I also felt like while the episode was strongly focused on Jon Snow, it was also partially about Sam quite a lot. I think this was maybe Sam's strongest episode; he is a much different character now, just remember him the first time he appeared. He is almost like another protagonist on the show because he's come quite a long way.

And the tunnel scene in front of the gate was just neat.

EDIT: I've figured out the pattern of the 9th episode curse:

(Stark) Death --> Battle --> (Stark) Death --> Battle

Well...Happy Father's, right?

Spoiler (click to read)

Killed on his ivory throne...even though it wasn't made of ivory, but you get my point.  Ever since Arya got that coin and skimming ahead on Wikipedia, I've been waiting for this, the day Arya speaks the words Valar Morghulis and sets sail to Braavos.

The seasons are catching up to GRRM.  Hope he gets those last few books out on time.

Re: The Game of Thrones Discussion Thread

So, guys, I haven't watched the show, but my sister had been wanting me to get on the books for several weeks, and I finally started and finished reading all of it within two months.
So many characters die that even saying a character is still alive is a spoiler in itself.
My top four characters lived though.

A few non-spoilery thoughts:
It's got some really clever writting style, I like how it sets itself as such a different world with it's own things and such, the whole thing about foreshadowing Winter is really cool.  I like how it cuts from scene to character to character rather fast and keeps stuff interesting with a constantly changing plot.  There are a lot of deaths, but they're rather well-done most of the time.  And there is some stuff now and then, but it doesn't distract from the story too much most of the time.  The series becomes most interesting around Storm of Swords, though basically nothing happens in Feast for Crows, and Dance with Dragons is better, but it leaves us with more unresolved plots and cliffhangers than is reasonably for such a long wait.  Of all the books to have to stop, this one is the worst to do so.

A few little gems I found in George's writing:
"She would cry, but the rain was already doing that for her"
"She was served a cut of sour wine and plucked a hair out of it.  Slender as my hopes of finding Sansa."
"The taste of onion was sharp on her tongue Just like my failure."

Slightly paraphrased, but I laughed heartily at those points.

And now a few notes which have come to pass in the show more or less, so not spoilery for those who have seen all of that:

Spoiler (click to read)

Three or four deaths were spoiled for me before I watched the show:
Ned's (though, that one seemed expected)
Robert's (I'd seen stuff with Joff being kinged, so Robert kinda had to be dead for that)
Ygrette (inadvertantly stumbled upon a gif of her death, though it did seem rather predictable anyway)
Possibly Lysa's (I saw a gif of Pyter pushing her off.  I knew the show's face for Pyter, so I knew he was pushing someone, but I didn't know who the woman was.  But since the Vale is a great place for pushing people to their deaths, and Peyter was headed that way when I was reading, so it seemed like it would be her, though I wasn't entirely sure)

Overall, I'm pretty happy with how few deaths were spoiled.  There are so many deaths that it can be so easy to mess up the story for someone.  I'm extremely happy that many came as surprises to me, such as Joff's death, which was such a sweet surprise, the Red Wedding, which was such a tragic surprise, and the battle betwixt the Mountain and the Viper was the most tense part in the book for me, that battle was super exciting.  And reading it as it unfolded without being cognizant of the outcome made it so great.

I like a lot how Ned is introduced bedhead someone, and for his death Ned is beheaded with his own sword, which all seems really clever.  Robb's death seemed fitting, although a shame.

Serio and Old Bear are my favourite dead characters.  Though in the book no one actually witnesses Serio's death, so I'm still holding out on some fool's hope that our dear teeth-clicking Bravvosi will come back somehow.  Old Bear was so cool, though.

I really don't much care for Asha or Theon though, like wow guys, get out of my life, I don't want to read about you guys.  In general, the whole Iron Islands part of the narrative seems like too much spice in the mix.  It's already complex enough as it is.

I like Jon's story a bunch, though I feel like the Wall is too disconnected from the rest of the story and the other characters, and I feel like it could have been more interwoven.

I have a similar feeling towards Dany.  Though I like her, Jorah, and Ser Grandfather, I feel like the the lore of Esos was just thought up as a kinda afterthought, without as much care and detail as Westeros.  The names especially feel clumsily made and ridiculous, as if they were made just to confuse us.  It's also even more disconnected than the Wall.

Spoiler thoughts from the whole book series:

Spoiler (click to read)

My top four characters are still alive (Tyrion, the Queen of Thorns, Hodor, and Old Bear's Crow).  I'm really happy about that.  They're all probably gonna die sometime, but it's nice that they've come this far.

I'm a bit annoyed though that George kicked Tyrion into the Esos story, as I don't like Esos as much, and Tyrion's my favourite.  I was hoping he'd join up with team Dragon and head back to attack Westeros and he and Dany would become best buddies.  But no, they're both stuck there for the time being.

The thing that most annoys me is that the Hound is dead.  I really did not want the Hound to be dead.  He was such a dark character, but I wanted him to live on.  I wanted him and Arya to become best buddies and work together towards some goal.  I'm especially mad that he died before he leaned of Gregor's death, which would have likely made him reevaluate his whole life's purpose and had a lot of room for some interesting character development, but instead that whole road has been closed.

However, in that one chapter with Jamie, Brienne comes up to Jamie and tells him how they need to save Sansa from the hound, though that's a whole mess in itself since she's supposed to be dead, Sansa's with Pyter in the Vale, and the Hound is supposed to be dead, so that whole thing right there is a jolly good mess and I'm not sure what to make of it and I shouted at George a lot for writing it.

I'm also annoyed that Arya and Sam have now been split off further from the rest of everything, only briefly crossing paths and now are in their own disconnected stories.  I get wanting to have a lot of stories with so many characters, but it's a little pointless if these characters are currently doing basically nothing that affects anyone else in the story.  In Feast for Crows almost no one died and almost nothing happened, and I'm bugged by that.

I also really don't like how George started giving the chapters weird headers like "The Prince in Winterfell" "The Soiled Knight" or "The Ugly Girl" instead of just putting the names of the characters.  It feels pointless and rather annoying, especially since that wasn't done originally and just randomly added in Feast for Crows  I liked it how it was.  It does make a lot of sense in places like "Reek though, as "Theon" would be rather spoilish.  But in many places it's just ridiculous and confusing.  Why can't we just have "Quinten" or "Barristan"? having all of those fancy names is bothersome.  I also don't like that a few characters get random one-off chapters, like that Knight or the Red Priest.  Ugg.  Why George!?

A theory which could very well be a spoiler for books as of yet unwritten:

Spoiler (click to read)

George seems to never properly kill off a character at the end of a chapter.  As of yet, every character who seems to have died at the end of a chapter from their own perspective seems to live or not properly die (Bran, Arya, Tyrion, others)  Sometimes this false death is reavealed rather quickly, but in some cases it may take a long time (in such cases as Theon, Catlyn, and Brienne).  So I'm going to throw a good guess that Jon Snow isn't dead yet.  Of course, he could easily die from someone else's perspective from his wounds, yes, just like Quinten did, but at least he's not dead for the moment.  Prologues and Epilogues are exceptions.  Those characters always die.
