Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Divergent - No spoilers just disappointment

I went into this film having no idea what it was about.  I was seriously impressed with the first hour or so.  Despite a great setting and explication of the story it was never really going anywhere.  I was getting really excited in the first 30 minutes.  When the movie reached about the 2 hour mark I really regretted thinking that.  Thinking back the movie was kind of set up for failure.  The story was really stretched towards the end and moved at a strange jerky pace that probably confused the average audience.  If the movie ended an hour and a half in I would give it a really clean score but I was thoroughly disappointed.

The count of Monte-Cristo

I've now watched two movies in a row with Guy Pearce playing the villain without being cognizant of the fact that he even starred in either film before my viewing.
I enjoyed this mostly because my family and I kept making Person of Interest references whilst watching since it had Jim Caveizel in it.

Coraline

The animation is just amazing, and yet not mind blowing enough to put me in the pain that Paranorman does, which is nice.
The story and the film in general is just delightful, fun, and very imaginative.
Though, I feel like the lighting in a few scenes felt wrong, with certain bright colours being overused or mismatched.
Also, they seem to have purposefully made the depth very wide to make it look more like it was shot with real people at actual sizes, and whilst I can understand trying to go for something that looks more like really life, I'm very fond of the narrow depth seen so often in miniatures.  With such a wide range of focus, I'm not sure exactly where it is my eyes belong upon the screen most of the time.

Hellboy

Fun and exciting.  I wish it had more scenes with Abe/blue, though.  He's pretty cool and then he kinda drops off before the final act of the film and he's not seen again for the rest of the movie.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Flash Gordon
Utterly shambolic, but kind of fun. That doesn't make it any less terrible, though. Enjoyed it in a painful kinda' way.

Vertigo
Masterful. I can see why it's always rated so highly. It just gets grimmer and grimmer and grimmer, but it's still engaging right to the end. The alternate ending was slightly clunky though.

I like to think its supposed to be like that. There is no way they could have written: "Flash, I love you - but we only have 14 hours left to save the Earth!" with a straight face.

Its sort of like the 60's Batman. Everyone who worked on that show/spin-off-film-thats-still-the-funniest-thing-ever must have been in on the joke. It also took me a while to enjoy The Rocky Horror Picture show, because when I first watched it I was kinda horrified. Eventually I returned to it, and once I'd got over the weirdness I realised that the film was definitely aware of how insane it was.

Memento
Great film, totally worth the watch. How the whims of everyday life are depicted as an everyday struggle for a once-ordinary-man is ingenious. The dialogue is also very blunt and realistic, albeit quite raw at some parts. I also like how we get to see the struggle of the protagonist

Overall, great movie.

You'd think, but then again there are some terrible writers out there. Just look at The Disappeared, The Terminal, and season nine of the original run of Dallas.

The Adam West Batman is a different cake too, as it was made in the 60s, during the Silver Age in comics.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

After school, I babysat my two younger brothers while my parents were still at work. I let them have a little free time, and guess what was playing on television?

Meet the Robinsons (2007)

After the first few minutes, the jokes got raw, and I started to remember this film a little more. This was when Disney was trying CGI out, without Pixar's help, for the first time. Chicken Little was the first film to come out of this experiment, and they tried again with Meet the Robinsons... mini/frustrated

The dialogue is unispired and obnoxious, the plot is pretty barebones, and the plot twists are tiring.

Spoiler (click to read)

The Laurie Metcalf lady and the Science teacher goes on to adopt Lewis? COME ON, REALLY?!? How about this? That goth kid is actually Lewis' mom as a child, and Wilbur went back in time to when his mom was a youth, brought her into the present day, and she had to start her childhood over there? And then The Bowler Hat Guy attacks Wilbur, and a blow gives him amnesia, and Wilbur forgets to return Lewis' mom to her own time. And then Lewis had to travel into the future with Wilbur in order to stay in existence! Wouldn't that make a better plot twist?

Some parts are cool, but Meet the Robinsons was made in the time when Disney's collection of non-Pixar CGI feature films was still maturing. And then came Bolt, and then Tangled, and then finally Wreck-It-Ralph in 2012. It only took Disney a few "meh" films, and now they finally got to where they are now.

I rather liked Meet the Robinsons.

Your opinion is actually the majority opinion I think. Meet the Robinsons is considered an underrated animation in Disney's library. I don't like it though; I don't like any of the Disney animations from 1999-2010 (Tarzan to Tangled).

12 Angry Men
Absolutely excellent movie. It was impressive that the film was set in one room for two hours, but it was more impressive that the film was engaging in one room for two hours. The cast was great, solid cinematography, and absolute superb writing. Definitely one of my favorite "older" films.

I legitimately dislike these movies (Except for The Emperor's New Groove, which I forgot was released in 2000). During this period there are films that are considered solid but I just don't like; never really had a liking towards them (Treasure Planet, The Princess and the Frog, Atlantis, Meet the Robinsons, and Lilo and Stitch). The rest are films that I would consider to be bad, mostly due to a weak or rehashed plot, poor character development, and either the lack or large amount of dialogue (Brother Bear, Chicken Little, Bolt, and Home on the Range).

I mostly found the 2000's Disney animations uninteresting; with the exception of a few, they lacked cohesive character development and instilled many pop culture cliches into their films. I am not saying that all these films are bad, some are decent and have stronger plots, but they just don't interest me. At the same time, I thought that the Pixar and DreamWorks animations from the past decade were mostly good and worthy of recognition.

So I would say that I dislike these films from a critical viewpoint, not a popular view (I remember that Lilo and Stitch in particular was very popular back in 2002, but I was one of the few who didn't enjoy it).

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Seeing as it was Tuesday yesterday, I felt exhilarated that I was able to watch a film last night.

Lost in Translation
, directed by Sofia Coppola, was an outstanding piece of cinema.

Both Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson were phenomenal. The story was unique and both comical and entertaining. The cinematography was very distinctive, and the the soundtrack fit the mood of the film perfectly.

Its 95% on Rotten Tomatoes is definitely deserved.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Antz (1998)

I watched this one in kindergarten, and I don't really remember enjoying it, because I didn't understand the film at all. But, now I can watch it as a teenager and understand the plot entirely. So, I re-watched it almost ten years later, and here's what I thought.

Antz is a typically interesting animated film because so many people think it copycats Pixar's A Bug's Life, and vice versa. Granted, both films were released in the same year, and have similar settings and storylines. But, watching this film made me come to realise that the storylines have little to no similarities at all. Both films are about ants and an ant princess, and whatever. But, Antz has a much more meaningful and delicate storyline that mainly targets youths and adults, while Pixar's counterpart settles for an audience of children. Switch the target audiences around, and you have annoyed adults and confused kids.

I liked Antz, and it was fun to see Dreamworks' first 100% CGI feature (despite the fact that it is indeed Dreamworks). And I did enjoy it a lot more than A Bug's Life. But, I don't think that most kids will not find this one as enjoyable as A Bug's Life, only because of Antz' adult humour and cruder animation and colour patterns.

Frozen (2013)

I had been avoiding this one ever since its theatrical release last Thanksgiving. But, I finally got around to watching it. I had heard little to no bad things spoken about Frozen, most of them saying it was "right up there with all the other Disney classics". Through my eyes, however, I didn't notice anything particularly outstanding or special about this film. It's really just another Disney princess movie.

The animation was pretty sweet, the songs were fun (but not as catchy as everyone says they are), and the voice cast was next to flawless. All the ingredients for a typical Disney movie. Nothing at all different from the other Disney animations. It just leaves me wondering what everyone thought was so great about it, that put it up there with The Lion King and all the other classics.

Lilo And Stich
So I had never seen this movie. I watched a bit of the TV show, which I didn't like because I had no context (like the tourist who keeps dropping his mint ice cream who is now my favorite character) but anyway I loved this film the characterization was great and it was pretty hilarious. The only thing i can find wrong with it is the fact that everyone changed their minds so easily at the eend (especially the Men In Black guy) and also when Stitch is playing the ukulele for one thing it's not even plugged into the amplifier and anotherthing the range of the music playing is waaay too low for an ukulele. I would know, I play one.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Goodfellas 1990
Okay where to start?
I started watching this film into about the first 5 minutes, and for some reason my instincts told me not to watch it (Violent scenes+Language)
The story follows the life of New York Mobster Henry Hill, and it depicts may of the events during his rise and fall. I thought the film was very well executed, but being a person where too much excessive language and violence don't mix, well I still thought the film was good anyways, especially from the acting of Joe Pesci.

Good film and easily recommended to those who are into the mob-crime history, but there are some warnings on the content in it.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Frozen
I really don't see how everyone is raving about how this is so amazing. I'm not saying it was bad or anything, it just wasn't really that great in my opinion. The songs were fun, the visuals were pretty cool, the cast was good, but, like I said, it just wasn't that great. Really the only character development I could find was mostly in Elsa, and a tiny bit in Anna becoming wiser from her spontaneous "Yes" to Hans. Also there weren't really any "happy" parts in the movie besides the very start and very end, and a few bits in the middle where Olaf was talking, and that made it feel kind of lacking. Another thing that felt lacking in comparison to other princess movies was pretty much any romance. You know that Anna and Kristoff like each other, but there's really no romance at all since, like previously mentioned, there weren't really any "happy" parts in the movie, it was mostly conflict. Overall it was a fun movie, but I really think it's overrated.

Enchanted  (2007)
More princess movies! This movie was sort of supposed to be a parody of most princess movies, and I think it did a pretty good job of it. It wasn't amazing, but it was a fun watch.

Spider-man 2
Thank you, Squid, I am very glad I watched this. I don't really have a whole lot to say except that I really enjoyed this. Again, my gripe is that Spider-man didn't really make enough quips while fighting, which seems to be the general consensus, though besides that I can't think of anything I disliked. One thing I'm kind of glad they didn't bring in (at least yet, to what I've read) is the conflict between Peter and several girls who like him, that was one thing that I didn't really like much about the original comics.
"Peter Parker... brilliant but lazy...."  That has got to be my favorite quote from the movie.

Almost exactly what I said a few posts ago.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I liked that Frozen wasn't afraid to dispense with the idea of love at first site (a Disney staple) and focus instead on the love between two sisters. As basic as that is, it's a dynamic that hasn't really been explored that much in Disney films (outside of Lilo and Stitch) and especially not Disney Princess films.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Captain America (2011)

A fairly cringeworthy display of overbearing patriotism and bad characterisations, all sewn together with a generous dollop of clichéd sentimentalism. The blasé depiction and glorification of conflict, the black/white characters, the plot, the dehumanisation of the enemy etc etc all combined to create a fairly disappointing recruitment drive movie.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I realized that, Mickey, and I hope you didn't mind me intruding on your brain cells for that information.

Jargon, I'm not saying the "love at first sight" thing is bad (it would actually be nice to see a slower path sometime - sort of like in Enchanted), just that in comparison to other princess films there really wasn't much romance at all in Frozen.
