Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I don't know about that one, and don't really care for the design.
Although I bought this one with my gift certificate and it looks and feels simply fantastic.
Were it not for the high price, I'd highly recommend it.

Thing is, most people out there want to keep things purist. For the looks, the ethics, and probably the price.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Well, without further procrastination, here is the set for Avengers Tower. Thanks to NXTManiac for the rug design idea. It has three walls, the left and right of which I can remove easily enough for some shots (the right wall isn't pictured here, as it's bare save for another set of chairs).

I went to all the trouble of making this, and yet still have no Doctor Strange minifigure. Madness, I say!

Thoughts anyone? I've already started animating with it...it's for a series of short animations for Brick Ultra's channel.

Holy cow that looks amazing jampot! Everything is so clearly detailed and the floor looks really nice. I don't really have any critiques at the moment because it looks so good!

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

That looks good to me Jampot. What kind of film will you be making with it?

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Wow that looks really cool.  I'm impressed.

Though, I feel like there are too many brown oriented things, the brown and beige, which seem a bit odd next to the red white and blue.  If at all possible, I'd suggest removing one of those colours and replacing it.  Preferably the wall which would probably work best in light grey.

The windows look really cool, but around that dark grey area there's this sharp corner where there really should be some more inverted slope bricks.  Also your background should be moved away from the windows so that shadows aren't cast upon it.  Also, you could try heavily lighting your background so that a lot of light comes through the windows themselves, which is a really cool thing to do, but often not done in brickfilms.

Basically just a series of fights (as in training, not death matches) between different Avengers. I'll be using a mix of actual figures and some custom ones I've made (e.g. Black Panther, Black Widow, and possibly Human Torch if I can work out how to do the effects).

I've shot about 5 seconds of the first one - Captain America VS Black Panther - and if I say so myself, it looks pretty darn cool. It's a step ahead of anything I'd done before (also a lot harder than most things I've done before).

I did originally create a frame for the background so I could pull it back from the set a bit, but I couldn't light it properly. I may try it again in future videos though.

The slope bricks...yeah, I ran out. Unless I can find more in a brick box I've forgotten about, it may have to stay that way, but I agree that it looks odd. If I had the bricks, this whole set would be very different.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Jampot, this was well-done.  I love the attention to detail without the set becoming overly-gaudy.  Also, recently there has been discussion on how to design sets: avoiding bright colors for walls, etc.  Jampot's set is how you do it.  Use a neutral color like beige/tan.  Then, use colorful pieces in a sensible way to fill your room.  That rug, the mugs, chairs, and flowers do just that, perfectly.  People new to set construction, you can learn a lot by looking at this set in detail.

Awesome set, guy! I really like the table holding the flowers, and the floor mini/jaw

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Jellypot, that room is awesome! There's something about your sets that's really unique and somehow, strangely, cosy. So yeah, I echo all the above.

Jellypot? Jeez, I haven't seem him in ages.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

In the middle of the town square in Welcome to Darkmoor, there stands a rather spooky pale tree.  I tried my hand at building it, and this is what I got.

Built from light grey bricks.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Squid, very cool, as always.  I always loved the earlier, Paradisia-type faces on the girls.  Cool use of light gray in the B&W.  I thin it is more effective for the starkenss of winder than would red-brown.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I love the pale colour.

Though the top part seems rather chunky and flat, I think perhaps having individual branches may look a bit better.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I couldn't think of a way to make it branchy, so I just kinda gave up on that, but I do rather like the fact that it looks kinda like a creepy goblet.
It is also unlikely that it will be seen from the top, though it does remain a possibility.
I'm also not sure if this is a real tree or a statue of a tree.  I really don't know, but I think it'll be creepy enough either way.

Also, I'm having lots of trouble deciding upon my road design, I really can't tell which one I want, I was hoping you guys could help.

Road 1:

https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t31.0-8/q71/s720x720/1921091_821987404482108_1379069977_o.jpg

Road 1 is made up of random dark grey and brown plates along with several random studs.

Road 2:

https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/t31.0-8/q71/s720x720/1978386_821987554482093_388783291_o.jpg

Road 2 is just basic brown, not really much special to it.
I'm wondering if road one is too much, because I don't want the road to be destracting.

What do you guys think?
(or have you another option?)

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

The tree is spooky, Squid, but I think you should raise some of the cheese-slopes by two 1x1 plates and then add a cheese-slope facing towards the two 1x1 plates. Too technical? I can take a picture if you want.

Road No. 1 may be a bit distracting, but it all depends on the camera angles you use. If you decide to use road No. 2, then you should raise it by a third, or two thirds of a brick.
A third option for the road would be to use Road No. 2, but add a few highlights to it. I think 1x2 plates here and there in a color lighter than the road would look nice, like bricks in the road.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Road 1, definitely. That said, maybe add some 1X1 plates to make it less even.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Tree looks great! It does look a lot like a goblet, but I think it works.

I prefer the second, embedded road option. Road 2 also looks like a modern paved road with sidewalks. Not sure if that was your intention, but if you wanted it to look like a dirt road I wouldn't make the edges of the road so straight and uniform. Road 1 does come off as a bit busy, and you lose some of the detail you would have gained if it was in color. Of course, a paved road and a dirt road give off their own different "feels": rural vs urban, undeveloped vs developed, ancient vs modern, so that should factor into your choice. If Darkmoor is meant to be a "town lost to time" or something, I'd go with a dirt road. But if it is meant to be a (fairly) modern city, I'd go for paved.

Looking forward to seeing more progress shots!
