Jumper plates?

A 1x2 plate with only one stud in the middle.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Jumper plates is a common nickname for this part: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3794

You might want to consider building the whole thing with sideways bricks, instead of plates. This would allow for more interesting shapes, but then you have no studs for your minifig to walk on. I also found this interesting solution to a five-point star, but it's very parts-intensive:

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Since Nathan is getting all complex, I'll go the other route and suggest something basic.

I'm thinking you could use this or this and the respective mirrored pieces to form a basic star. It wouldn't be perfect, but could work. As for the rug, another somewhat basic but workable route would just cover the floor with the appropriately colored plates. Just form the "rings" as best you can at the right scale and go from there.

Also, you could build up the rest of the floor by one plate, and then be able to sink the wedge plates in the floor and makes things level. (There will be gaps, so again, this isn't a perfect solution.)
Being as big as it is, even the blocky-er solution would mostly work...Ish

And then there's this which is way too small...

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Those are all good ideas. Nathan, I think yours might be a little difficult (even though they are cool) and I'm not comfortable enough as a brickfilmer to animate on a smooth floor yet. I think I'll probably try to build the floor up by one plate and build it in. Of course, my next problem is making a floor that's big enough to hold the set...it's probably my largest set to date, and each of the three walls comes away relatively easily. It's come out a little more Wayne Manor than I wanted it to, mainly because I don't have enough grey bricks but have tons of beige ones from Hogwarts which I've filled it with.

I'll try to post some WIP pics tomorrow.

Took a crack at it. Not sure what your LEGO collection is like, jampot, but something like this could work.

Also, I entered the ReBrick Be the Special contest with this thing here. The first part of judging is based on "likes" so if you have a ReBrick account your like would be appreciated. mini/bigsmile

Liked it!

Thanks for the floor plan of the shield, but I'm pretty sure that I don't have enough bricks. I'll give it a go though.

The shield is pretty big, so if you want to try something smaller but in a similar design, I recommend this website. For the star I just overlayed the Captain America shield on top of the grid and filled in squares.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I've gotten a bit fed-up with most gas mask designs I've seen out there, because either they're non-purist, the figure can't turn it's head, it involves a rubber band in some way (which, aside from being impractical for filming...let's just say I've snapped many a rubber band). So I made this.

By no means perfect, but it is recognizable as a gas mask, low-maintenance, and posable to boot.

Here are the pieces; I used a head from an old Johnny Thunder set, but a light grey or black head will work just fine.

The minifigure can move about and turn its head (to a degree) without fear of disturbing things. Designed specifically with Brickfilmers in mind, because clearly that's something I still can do.

(Sorry about the liberal amount of images, all).

Try uploading the pictures to a site like Flickr or Brickshelf. We can't see something linked to your Gmail account.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I like the mask, Golden, but to me the 'snout' is bulky, but then it would be near impossible to make it fit to scale.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Just consulted Bricklink. The gas masks can be made in black, white, and dark grey, because of the colours of the helmets and goggles. It would make a nice Civil Protection figure from Half Life 2, come to think of it. *returns to LEGO bin*

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I find the bulky filter is always the main problem.

Oddly enough I came up with my own gas mask design a few days ago.  It uses a different technique but it's still purist.  I might post it soon if I get the chance.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Nice solution to the problem!
The only problem is that it's a full helmet and not just the mask.
Still, it's creative and really cool. The bulky filter really isn't that big of a deal, since so many Lego things are totally out of scale as-is.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Well, here's my own design.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Very nice! I did try scouring my own collection for one of those helmets, but unfortunately the only one I'm aware of at the moment is trans-orange.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

They're both good designs, but I think I like FlyingMinifigs a little more, it's less obtrusive.

Saw this: gas mask
Any good? Or have you already seen and discounted?
