Topic: Building a good set design

Hi everyone. I thought about building the good set design. I have lots of bricks, but... They are all in the big mix and in various colours, and when I say various, I mean that there are about 2 to 100 bricks in almost every colour bricks canbe and I have lots of bricks in strange shapes, that only look good in their original set. The only exception are cuboid, tan 2x4 bricks. I have exactly 100 of them. But it's too small amount for building a scenography:( And the scenography in every film couldn't be made of tan bricks. Does anyone have any suggestion for what interesting set design I could build from the various bricks, or which bricks are the best for building a nice scenography? I would be really grateful for any help:)

I think it would be a good idea to sort your collection, then you have a firm grasp on what you have to work with.

Re: Building a good set design

Sorting is a good move.

One thing you can do is use bricks as bricks that they are not, for instance, for some bigger sets I'll use a slope brick as a wall brick.  I just have the flat side of the slope built into the wall, and then I have this ugly thing jutting out from the back part of the wall.  Of course, this awkward thing doesn't matter, as it won't be visible on the good side of the wall.

For a brickfilm I'm planning called Welcome to Darkmoor, I'm going to shoot in black and white and build a set with very ugly looking colours.  Or course, since it's black and white, I can use much more stuff on my set without having to bother as much with certain constraints.  For instance, I can have blue grass, but on camera it will look close enough to how the green grass does.

Yeah, sure, I should sort it, that's the main thing I should do.

I used this trick when I nedded a corner from bluish grey bricks. Looked nice, but from the other side there was even a "Pizza" sticker mini/lol
Thanks guys.

1) The Builders of Tomorrow Set has all brick-shaped elements in many colors.  One or two of those sets will increase your brick base.

2) Put an ad in your local trade paper: "Kids all grown up?  I'll buy their Lego collection".  I got a lot of older sets that way, which are heavier in basic bricks/windows/ slopes, etc.

3) Watch the Nathan Wells videos on sets.  You'll find a link in a recent thread on a similar topic, started by General Ned.

Oh, thanks HoldingOurOwn. I once bought the small Builders Of Tomorrow set and... All the elements had mixed up with everything else. I'm a guy that can't deal with losing some little things (I just lost one of my few green lightsabers, but it will gonna find when I'm gonna clean up mini/wink ). But sorting could handle chaos for a little time.
I didn't think about making a trade paper. Yeah, nice idea. I should ask some of my friends for Lego stuff, they do not use anymore and make some kind of advertisement.
I appreciate Nathan Wells' advices. He made a film with lots of tips for the last THAC. I'll look at that topic and movie mini/smile Thanks.
