There's got to be a catch beyond sharing it to your Twitter/Facebook...
I tried to get it with my primary e-mail, but never got the verification e-mail.
Tried it with my secondary e-mail, said there was already an account with that one.
My confidence in this is quickly disintegrating...
Hitfilms website isn't working for some reason. Stupid question to ask- is hitfilm an effects program, or is it an editing software?
I had the same issue Pritchard.
Try going to the main page of the site, clicking "login" in the top corner, and then enter whatever information I assume you used to make your account. Then it'll say that the email verification hasn't been verified, then on that page you can click to resend the verification email. This time I actually got the email, the other times from the download page it never sent the email.
Then I went to the URL for the free Hitfilm and chose to login there (after tweeting the same thing again... 
) and then this time I got a download link and a comfirmation code!

You don't receive and e-mail after signing in and sharing on Facebook or Twitter, the activation code apears on the same window as the slide changes.
Try it again and tell me if it works.

How big is Hitfilm in file size?
Download is 115MB, but the program won't import Helium Frog exports.
It'll import other any footage, but none of those clips for some reason.
So much for that.I'm sure I'll play with it more later, but for now it's useless.
I had that same problem with lightworks when I tried it a while ago.
What I'd do in that case, Pritchard, is either convert the HF file to a WMV or something, or take all the images and export them through MonkeyJam. I'll probably get around to downloading this later today, but I'm definitely not missing this opportunity. 
My thoughts on this are "I probably won't use it much" (I like doing as much as possible in camera) but my other thought is "Since It's free it is worth getting even if I never use it for a film"
This sounds like a great opportunity, even though I've done pretty much all my effects in-camera or using some very rudimentary frame-by-frame photo editing. That isn't to say this might be useful for me at some point. My inner paranoid security freak is telling me that this is probably some sort of secret attempt to infect my computer with a virus though... 
Would it be possible to install it on more than one computer?
Thanks megagill74! I may as well get it, since Windows Movie Maker does not work anymore.
I imagine you could just download it once, copy the package, and move it to the other computer.
So I successfully downloaded it to my Mac computer and installed it; it looks like it's got some pretty sweet effects. I actually have After Effects CS6 so I feel a bit silly using Hitfilm but hey, it's free and it does a lot of specific, but of good quality work.
The only odd thing I noticed is that it didn't ask for the serial number/product key that the site gives you when you download it. I saved the number for future reference if it's needed, you should probably be sure to do that when you get it.
It looks great and for free, I'll totally take it. Back when I was looking into getting After Effects I looked for a cheaper alternative and Hitfilm was my favorite choice but at the time it was only available for Windows. It's nice to get it now.
END, I'd certainly suggest getting it just because it's free and good for the effects it does.

I have 32 bit, and to my knowledge, you can only get it with 64 bit, that's all there was in the e-mail.
