Topic: New laptop...

After a long hiatus I’ve decided to get back into brickfilming and I’m looking to buy a laptop.
I’ve never owned a laptop before and have a few questions

How long will the battery last on a $1000 laptop before I need to recharge it?
Will a 15.6-inch screen be adequate?
All the Screen Resolutions seem to be about 1366 X 768 at this price point would this be a problem?

For $1000 I can get this:

Toshiba

PROCESSOR: 2.4GHz Intel® Core® i7-4700MQ Quad Core Processor
SCREEN SIZE: 15.6" Display
RAM: 8GB RAM
HDD: 750GB HDD 5400rpm
GRAPHICS: nVIDIA GeForce GT 740M 2GB With Optimus + Intel® HD 4600 Graphics
OS: Genuine Windows 8 (64Bit)
Screen Definition 1366 x 768

^Would this do the job? Could i get away with spending less and getting intel core i5 and 4 - 6 gigs of ram?

Cheers

Re: New laptop...

I'm using a Lenovo Y480 and I'm editing 4K footage ok.

I think with that laptop you are more than set. With a GT 740M you'd be able to play some of the newest games on the market today. That i7 processor would be more than enough to edit footage. The only time I max out my i5 is when I render out the video. If you really want the best processor you should totes get the i5-2500K. Best processor in my opinion. If you want a nice fast boot up time and fast render time for videos I would recommend you buy yourself a SSD, or at least find a laptop with dual hard drives and comes with a SSD in it. SSD's are the future bro, I'm talking 4X's faster than normal hard drives. But I'm just saying. If you're willing to spend that much money on a laptop for editing might as well spend the extra buck and be set for the years to come.

(tl;dr version) You're set, buy SSD for faster render speeds and boot up times if you are willing to spend an extra buck.

Regarding battery it is of course different for every laptop and depends what you do on it. Although the laptop you mentioned has one of  the latest Intel Haswell (4000 series) processors which has greatly improved battery life over Ivy Bridge (3000 series).

Also as Carroll said the i7 processor is more than a enough, although if I were you though i'd probably go for a haswell core i5 and then try and get a 1920 x 1080 resolution screen with the money saved.

Re: New laptop...

All new laptops seem to have 1366 x 768 resolution unless you spend $2000 or more.
The only thing i could find with better screen resolution was a Refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad T410 i5 for $800

Intel® Core™ i5-540M Processor
(2 Cores, 2.53 GHz, 3M Cache)

Memory: 8 GB RAM

Display: 14.1" WXGA, 1440 x 900

choice of 320 GB hard drive or a 128 GB Solid State Drive

Re: New laptop...

ehhhh, dual core processors are kind of meh. You still want to have a quad core processor. Remember, rending out a video utilizes all the cores of a processor. As for that SSD neither of those are a good option unless you plan to solely do nothing but video editing on it. Shoot, my desktop has a total of 5TB's and my laptop has 750GB, it's down to 100GB's of free space. Mostly from all of my Adobe applications and projects saved on it.
