Re: What was the last movie you watched?

The cult not so cult anymore following of One Direction intimidates me a little. But I'd love to know what you have to say about the movie.

Captain Phillips (2013)
Riveting, to say the least. Hanks is a bit of a shoe-in for the OSCARS. But his performance isn't bad in any way.
I found that the shakycam helped intensify the action, in some ways. But, it soon got obnoxious and headache-inducing, if you will. The camera angles also seemed to work, but the shakycam really made me shift in my seat...or was that just the preview for the new Ender's Game film that was shown before the picture?
There was a noticeable lack of better writing in some scenes. But, that was quickly fogged up with intense performances by the guys who played the Somali pirates. And Catherine Keener gave an average performance--what little there was.
The cinematography was jaw-dropping. It's camerawork like this that turns the heads of important OSCARS people.
I was surprised to see Kevin Spacey's name in the credits, as the executive producer. But, Greengrass has a way with action/thriller flicks like this film. His direction half makes me want to watch the Bourne series.
Henry Jackman's musical score is so wondrous, it sounds almost like something Hans Zimmer would compose.
I found the US Navy nurse at the very end very annoying. She tries to pry information out of Hanks' character when he's obviously not doing well. He's in shock, and she treats him like a kid, repeatedly asking "What happened? What happened? Why are you bleeding?"
I'd say I got my money's worth, even if I wasn't the one who paid for the movie ticket. So, if you like to see a shirtless Hanks wrestling with Somalis on a boat for 65% of the film, Captain Phillips is the film for you.
8.3/10
Henry Jackman's a Zimmer protege and possibly a former ghostwriter of him.
John Carter.
I don't know why people didn't go see this one. There's very little wrong with it at all. I thought it was a lot of fun, and really enjoyed it. Plus, the dog-thing is hilarious.
Chungking Express
Engaging, for a movie that turns into a completely different story with different characters halfway through. Quite sweet, all in all, even with the drug dealers and murders in the first story. Sentimental, but not overly so.
I watched Pacific Rim last night. It was awesome. Hasbro should put Michael Bay (and themselves for backing him) in jail and get the guys behind this movie to restart the Transformers live action films without desecrating the series. It fuses so many cult favorite concepts: giant monsters, man-controlled mecha, swordplay, etc. I've seen elements from Japanese animation, Godzilla (both the Japanese movies and the 1998 American version), Gamera, Independence Day, Men In Black 1, Voltron, Gundam, WWII propaganda posters both American and German, Star Wars, Star Trek, and countless other influences, and I predicted a lot of the story's twists. Despite all this, the movie was freshly original. I don't know how much CGI or real sets were used, but everything seemed to be on such a gigantic scale, yet so believably natural. That's when special effects are at their best. It was like watching the special effects in Jurassic Park 2: when I first saw the Stegosaurus among the actors, it seemed like I was right there next to one in real life. In fact, the natural-looking special effects from “Jurassic Park: The Lost World” was the saving grace of an otherwise horrible movie in every other way. Back on topic, “Pacific Rim” is a great cult film, a great action movie, and a great movie. My wife loved it, my brothers love it and supplied the DVD, and even my mother, who's more of a “The Help”, or “The Blind Side” person, enjoyed it!
Predictive Entry: The last film I watched was “Ender's Game”. It premiered Nov. 1st. I watched it on Nov. 5th. That's okay. Been waiting over a decade... a few extra days is no biggie.

Well.... what do you think?
I would rate it 8.5/10
I like One Direction, so, yeah. There were lots of funny scenes, like Harry and Liam were fishing, Harry somehow got a fishing hook on his butt, then he said, "My ass is on the line".
There was also a "touching" scene where Zayn buys his mum a house. It was cool, but I didn't really find it that touching, my sister and her friend cried though.
drama queens...
The Fifth Estate
This was a strange one...Usually biopics are made after the event they're made about is concluded! Not with this one! Wikileaks and Julian Assange are still topics that are in the media, so it was a hard film to pull off from that point of view...That being said I actually quite enjoyed the film! Benedict Cumberbatch plays the roll fantastically well, and it gave an insight into the interesting, potentially terrifying world, of government and corporation secrecy!
Not a very action packed film...I mean it's kinda hard to make a film about leaking secrets interesting, but I enjoyed it none-the-less! Definitely worth a look if you're interested in that sorta film!

Gravity
I saw this when it first came out but was too lazy to write a review of it but hey, better late than never. Holy friggin goodness it was really great. The visuals were fantastic, the acting, the writing, the music, pretty much everything about it was great. The trailers and TV ads unfortunately don't do it justice, I thought it might be extremely boring, but it kept my attention the entire time, even with the long uninterrupted shots, which were beautiful.
Oh yeah, see it in 3D. Or IMAX. It's worth the few extra dollars.

Pacific Rim
I wish I could've seen this in theaters to see these robots on the big screen. I was afraid that the action shots would be so tightly packed in that it's hard to tell what was going on, but they were framed perfectly. The story wasn't absolutely fantastic, and it won't be the most memorable part of the film, but I'm glad that there was enough story and heart to be entertaining when there weren't giant monsters and robots punching each other in the face. Overall, it's definentaly worth a watch or two.

The problem that you feared about framing was minimal in Pacific Rim, and it was a problem throughout all of the 2007 so-called Transformers movie, and probably the sequels (which I won't watch). As for 5th estate, I didn't plan on watching it unless I knew it wasn't going to glorify Julian Assange. Did it?

Well I heard it tried to be balanced to the film's detriment, and Assange himself didn't like it.
Countdown: 12 days until I see Ender's Game, God-willing. My brother rumored that our local movie place is showing it tonight @ midnight, but even if true, I'll be sleeping then.
I actually finally saw High School Musical. It's weird knowing that I had been missing out on such a classic for so long.
IF it makes you feel better, I never saw the HSM Trilogy.

Catchy and popular but not a classic.

My housemates recently found out that I have never watched a Studio Ghibli film. They are determined to rectify this apparently 'shameful' act on my part.
Ponyo
Probably not the best place to start. I...think I liked this, but the fact this is set in the real world but weird things are happening and everyone is being so relaxed about it makes this kind of freaky. Ponyo herself is utterly terrifying, and only I seem to notice it.
But I sort of liked it. I liked the moral ambiguity of the piece. The antagonist isn't trying to keep Ponyo away because he's cruel - he's keeping Ponyo away because he wants to protect her. And there is a heart to it. The ladies in the retirement are my favourties, but I kinda wish they didn't call them 'The Old People'. Every old person I've met hates being called 'old', and for good reason.
Howl's Moving Castle
I definitely liked this. I liked how this was clearly set in a fantasy world, so my mind was more than open to weirdness. I also found it interesting that an elderly woman was the main character - which is something we see even less than a female protagonist. At first I didn't like Howl. I thought he was your typical overly perfect man, but then it turned out he's like a teenager and he actually had flaws - which gave him some complexity.
Yeah, this one's really good. Some of the voices are weird (Christian Bale? Billy Crystal?) but I can't really think of much wrong with it, although the ending feels a bit rushed, but sometimes the buildup is so good you pretty much expect the resolution to not quite meet your expectations.
Princess Mononoke
Hmmm. I'm not sure if I prefer 'epic, serious' studio Ghibli over 'quirky, heartwarming' Ghibli. I will say that the plot is excellent, but the characters felt kind of bland to me. Again, I liked how there was mortal ambiguity, but aside from the refreshing plot and the Forest Spirit, there wasn't anything too memorable here. Maybe I need to give this another watch some day.
Spirited Away
Aside from the girl occasionally pointing out the obvious ("He's bleeding!" "Their attacking him!" Yeah, thanks. This isn't the audiobook) this is perfect. Absolutely beautiful. Part of me wishes I had started with this film, but I'm actually glad I didn't - because I'm going to be comparing every Ghibli film to this from now on. This is what is known as the 'Valve' effect.
Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
I had been meaning to watch this for a very long time. I had already caught glimpses of bits of it before, and seen so many gifs of it on Tumblr so I had basically seen half of it already.
I went to a party dressed as a horse a few days ago, and people kept calling me Bad Horse, so I decided to go ahead and watch it.
It was horrible, but in a good way, in a fun way. I really liked some of the songs and the characters.
But it seems more like the characters should be in a TV show rather than a short movie.
Max, most people including me view Ponyo as inferior to Ghibli's other work so don't be reluctant to say you didn't like it, I don't think you'll offend anyone. Of course if you did like it that's cool too. My favorite has to be The Cat Returns, although that wasn't by Miyazaki.
Also Squid you simply must post a picture of your horse costume.
