Topic: The Latest In YouTube Idiocy!

So I wondered where the video responses were and I went to Screwgle help and they said they ended it on Sept. 12.  They said that only 0.0004% of video views ever lead to a video response click (that's 1 in 250000, allegedly).  Well, how many hundreds of millions of views are there a day?  I know that I have had magnitudes far above average traffic to my videos via the responses.  (Or YT's lying, which isn't unusual for them).  They then said that they're working on better, more efficient solutions.  So two questions:

1) Why not figure out those solutions first and THEN eliminate the video response?  Maybe they've spent too much time around their beloved gov't autocrats who don't know how to do anything in a sensible manner?
2) Can't the video responses that have been already made remain up even after the new system is implemented, whenever that may be?

Oh, and 3:

With such a radical change, why not tell the people what you're planning, or already have done, like when you forced everyone to convert over tot he "glorious (being sarcastic here) "YouTube One"?  Instead, let's keep our users guessing.

Re: The Latest In YouTube Idiocy!

Exactly why I refuse to upload anything to YouTube. I mean, I'll still watch videos on YouTube, but I don't use it for uploading my films.

I don't know if people will want you opening up a seperate thread, though. I think they would like for members to post any YouTube-related stuff in the YouTube thread.

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

Re: The Latest In YouTube Idiocy!

I know Vimeo is growing.  Is that where you post?  The problem is that there's no outlet that draws anywhere near as much.  People need to support an alternative.

Re: The Latest In YouTube Idiocy!

I think it's dumb because video responses are meant for sending a message to the creator of a video, so of course the rate was going to be low.

It's not like they've left us without an alternative though. You can #hashtag your videos so they show up when you search for that subject. Not ideal, but it's not bad.

mini/rolleyes
I like YouTube better than Vimeo (even if they had equally large audiences). Vimeo has far less options. (Also I like the YuTube One channel format better than the previous one mini/shifty but not as much as the one when I joined)

Re: The Latest In YouTube Idiocy!

Vimeo might have less options than youTube, but at least they're not pushing ads into your face all the time. That's got to be worth something.

Re: The Latest In YouTube Idiocy!

MY biggest problem with YouTube isn't the ads (I can tell YouTube not to put ads on my videos) it's the insistence about Google+.

Re: The Latest In YouTube Idiocy!

People complain that Vimeo isn't as good because the comment section isn't as prominent - to which I respond "Thats why its better!" I hate audience participation. I like criticism and feedback, but I hardly get that on YouTube...and I don't even get that many comments/views. The only intelligent comments I get are from other people from BiM (BTW: Thanks guys! Your basically my entire audience right now)

I'm not a misanthrope, but I generally dislike people on the internet - because the internet basically brings out the worst in everyone. I love online games like Team Fortress 2 and Guild Wars 2 because you collaborate with other players whilst keeping interaction to a bare minimum, but anything where you actually have to talk to people just annoys me. The reason why I still hang out here is because its pretty much the only place online where I can have an intelligent conversation.

I blame YouTube's encouragement for ordinary people to upload stuff. I remember back in 2007-2008ish when YouTube was either a place where content creators gathered (granted there were a lot of bad content creators, but they were actually trying), or where you watched copyrighted material (in the days when you could find anything on YouTube, albeit in crappy quality). Somewhere along the line, YouTube turned into a place where idiots could upload a video of their family reunion, their babies first words, and their pets doing stupid stuff. I blame the rise of Facebook - when suddenly nothing could be private anymore so people needed to record every aspect of their lives and upload it for us to not watch.

Re: The Latest In YouTube Idiocy!

Yeah.. I'm getting stupid ads more and more when I click a video... I just look at another tab on my browser until
i can skip...  And I am not joining Google + and when they try to force that, I'm through with Screwgle altogether.

Google's slogan is also laughable: "Don't be evil."  Maybe they forgot the other half of the slogan: "That's our job!"  Anyone else know a more suitable slogan for this outfit?

Amen. Sure, Vimeo isn't all that great. But at least it isn't YouTube.

Exactly! Instead of leaving YouTube for those aspiring filmmakers who actually wanted to make videos, they had to go and herd a bunch of nobodies with a camera-phone.

.

I honestly don't see the problem with this.

Youtube is a video sharing platform. From day one, it was made to be a place where someone could share a greatly produced short film, or a family video. And I'd say that about 95% of the people who upload to YouTube, to this day, use it for the latter purpose. It's just that, because of the low spectrum of people a video of that kind would interest, they don't get very popular and aren't seen as much as the former.

Youtube just makes it easy for people at any skill to upload a video and share with anyone they want to see, be it people all over the world, or a couple of friends.

I'm not saying I agree with everything they do. While the subtraction of responses has little to zero impact on me, other things has. That being said, I feel that YouTube can be a place for both aspiring filmmakers and "a bunch of nobodies with a camera-phone."

While the righteous indignation is admirable, a quick look at the Wayback Machine is evidence enough that Youtube has never been geared toward "filmmakers". It was created for people who wanted to upload their family reunions and amusing pet antics. The site wasn't at any point in its existence intended to become a forum for sharing films exclusively.

Hence the name, "YOUtube".

no more brickfilming *sad face*.

And also the first YouTube video was about a guy at the zoo.

Re: The Latest In YouTube Idiocy!

Personally, I think everybody is taking this a little seriously,

no matter what way you look at this, Brickfilming is just a hobby, and Youtube is just the way that we chose to share our hobby with the world. Does it really matter if they removed a small feature like video responses?
(I've never used them so I might not appreciate the loss)

I'm not saying I like it when Youtube removes or changes stuff (if it aint broke don't fix it mini/wink ) but it's not like it ruins the entire website upload place thingy.

Again, Youtube is just the way to share our videos, Vimeo works just fine to,
(I prefer Youtube because it loads faster for me, but that's just because of my internet connection mini/eh )

Re: The Latest In YouTube Idiocy!

The problem is that the changes they make reduce the quality of things instead of improve them.  And here's the latest, starting next month, Screwgle is changing their policy where they can transfer/sell/give/ any of your private information and pictures to others.  But if you signed up before that date you are retroactively under the new "privacy" policy (or it should be called LACK OF privacy policy).  And if you delete your account, Google keeps it forever in their databases anyway.  So that's Google for ya.  First they hose you then they make it official.
