Topic: Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest 2?

Happy Sunday everyone!

I was re-watching Night Owl's Hasting's today; a film that swept the Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest. This was an inspiring brickfilm, as was the contest.

The reason I posted this thread was to see if anyone would be up for a MoB 2. Would anyone be up for organizing it? Would anyone be up for judging? This contest would allow brickfilmers to make original content, as well as branch out of the realm of normal brickfilms. Below I've posted the original topic from brickfilms.com member, prof1515; back from 2006.

“The MoB will rise above the crowd.”

The Masterpieces of Brickfilming (MoB) Film Festival is designed to showcase films that feature fully-developed stories, well-rounded characters, quality voice acting, and all-around excellence in filmmaking. To qualify for competition, the specifications are simply to concentrate on development of a story and characters that meet or exceeds the standards presently placed on quality animation. That’s not to imply that animation and cinematography aren’t important. It’s merely to say that there’s more to making a quality film than stop-motion alone. Films entered in the competition must also comply with the following guidelines:

1. Copyright infringement is not permitted in any form. Use of copyright material is only acceptable if you get permission from the copyright holder. Unless the owner of the copyright has granted legal permission to use their property, you do not have the right to do so. This pertains to characters, names, stories, music, and anything else protected under U.S. Copyright law. If someone else made it, it’s their property not yours. Likewise, filmmakers’ rights to their own intellectual property shall be respected and this competition shall in no way profit by or from the films entered into it.

2. There is no limit on length, neither maximum nor minimum, but it can hardly be expected that a film of only a minute or two would have a well-developed story or characters. Use some common sense in developing your story and length will fall into place appropriately.

3. In order to maintain the filmmakers’ creative free-hand, there is no required theme outside of producing a quality film. However, keep in mind the need for a well-developed script and well-written characters. The film may be a drama or a comedy, a historical epic or a science fiction film. The choice is yours but remember that quality story and characterizations are of the utmost importance.

4. Films intended for this competition should be posted online no sooner than 12:01 am Central Standard Time (6:00 am GMT) December 26 and no later than the deadline of 11:00pm Central Standard Time on December 30, 2007 (5:00 am GMT). Films should be posted online in the Reviews Forums and should bear the tag “MoB” and the name of the film in the title of the post.

5. Films eligible for this competition may not be publicly screened or posted for viewing prior to the date of December 26, 2007.

6. Filmmakers intending to enter the competition should notify prof1515 by December 26, 2006. There is no requirement that if you do express intention to enter that you must provide a film. This is merely to judge an estimate of interest and participation.

7. Filmmakers should notify prof1515 by September 26, 2007 if they still intend to participate in the competition. Films which are not enrolled by this deadline are not eligible for competition.

Now, for the details of the judging. The panel of judges will be selected following the September 2007 deadline for entrance notification. Members of the panel may not have a film in nor have participated in a film eligible for the competition. Judging will take place beginning on December 31, 2007. Each judge shall choose their three choices for each category and denote their favorites by ranking them first, second and third. Each choice shall be awarded points: five points for first, three points for second, one point for third. The total points accrued by each shall be calculated with the award going to the film or person with the most points. Should a tie occur, the film or person with the most first-place votes shall win. Should a tie still remain, a run-off vote shall be conducted. If no winner is still capable of being determined, the judges may award a tie.

Announcement of the winners shall be made on January 2, 2008. Awards in the form of prize checks in the amount of $50 will be awarded for the following categories with the exception of Best Film which shall carry a $100 prize:

Best Film
Director’s Award
Actor’s Award
Screenwriter’s Award
Cinematographer’s Award

Films are eligible for more than one prize at the discretion of the judges.

Good luck!

Of course the prizes would by different as well as some of the judging, but I feel it would neat to keep the whole concept the same.

Let me know what you, guys think!

Happy brickfilming,
-Willow Tree

Re: Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest 2?

Damn, another contest that I really want to enter, if this keeps up I'll have no time to make some short films of my own.

Jokes aside, I hope this gets a lot of entries, it's getting a bit tiring seeing everyone, including myself act somewhat lazy with he production of films just because they're made with lego. I know most of the people on the site are pretty young but I kind of wish a lot more effort would be put into the writing aspect of brickfilms.

When I get done with my current film I'll probably try to come up with something decent for this.

Re: Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest 2?

I'm very glad your interested mini/smile However, it's not a contest just yet, hopefully soon. I was just throwing the idea out there to see if anyone would be interested in entering, hosting, or judging the contest.

Although there's not a current MoB contest, I guess this whole idea would give brickfilmers inspiration to write well thought-out, developed stories.

Well, at any rate, I guess we'll see what happens.

Re: Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest 2?

I kind of skimmed this and was like nooo the deadline happened like four years ago
but you know what I'm totally cool with this and I would completely try and enter thiscontest

Re: Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest 2?

I think this is a great idea. Just create some logos (if you suck at it I can help) and some other stuff and it will be swell!

EDIT: Also, can we enter a pilot to a series in this contest?

uh oh!

Re: Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest 2?

Interesting. Somebody should move this to the Contests & Festivals forum.

It isn't a contest yet (by the way does anyone know were I can see night owl's thac 4 entry?)

Re: Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest 2?

If his Thac 4 entry is, A Gift From the Future, then I have it. I can send it to you if you like, just let me know.

BTW END films, thanks for actually reading the whole post mini/lol

Re: Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest 2?

If you could put this into action, I'd love to attempt making an entry. The only problem I see is that the longer the contest, the less people that enter. THAC has about 60 entries, BRAWL has about 40, other contests have about 10-25, and if memory serves right, the original Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest only had about 4 entries. Even still, I'd like to see this contest happen.

If we could make this happen, it would be great! I would love enter!

Re: Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest 2?

I would adore it if this happened, but I'm not totally sure the interest would be there. The original contest only received 3 entries, and that was back when spending a long time on a film was even more common...

Maybe I'm just a pessimistic old hack. mini/smile

Re: Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest 2?

Ah, yes. I totally see what you are saying, Hazzat mini/wink

Though, I do already have some good prizes in the works. Perhaps that will persuade people mini/lol

Re: Masterpieces of Brickfilming Contest 2?

If I could enter the still WIP STEAMPUNK, I would. But I really don't have the time or resources to work on something worthy of this anymore. And while I would love to see a longer more involved contest, I doubt it would get many entries.

Still, I suggest at least trying to host one. If allowed, you'll have at least one guaranteed entry from me.
