Topic: Whatever happened to the trees?

You never see those nice tree pieces in Lego sets anymore.  The only 1 I know of recently was one of the Christmas village sets.  Instead you have these brick-built trees that look really lame, either the 1x1 round studded trunk ones and flat leaves (the lamer) or the ones with 1/2 arch trunks (not as bad).  What's up with that?

Re: Whatever happened to the trees?

I really like the arch ones. Just sayin'. En fait, one of my favourite sets when I was younger was the original Aragog set, which was full of those arch trees, and they've been really useful since.

Re: Whatever happened to the trees?

Well, many little LEGO environmentalists will tell you that its due to illegal logging, and that the logger minifigures then build fake, brick-built trees so nobody will notice the one-piece trees are gone. Don't listen them, this is a pack of lies. In reality its just the LEGO company being stupid. The LEGO company does dumb things, this is one of them.

I miss the classic trees, they are great for brickfilmers who are lazy or just want to build a set in a rush. I have a few from my mom's old collection. They are pretty useful, especially when just putting them in the background.

no more brickfilming *sad face*.

Re: Whatever happened to the trees?

I still have a few of those original LEGO Christmas-like trees lying around. But, my brother bought a LEGO Forest Patrol--or whatever--set a couple months ago. And I can say the same about those brick-built trees; I don't like them.

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

Re: Whatever happened to the trees?

I actually kind of prefer building my own trees. The classic ones don't really have any studs or customizability.

Re: Whatever happened to the trees?

On Pick A Brick you can get a ton of the classic trees. That's how I got mine.

Re: Whatever happened to the trees?

the classic one piece trees are great if you are building like a manicured lawn with edward scissorhands topiaries and stuff, but I agree that brick-built trees are so much more realistic. The reason I don't do that more is because it's hard and they always break mini/sad

Re: Whatever happened to the trees?

I tend to like custom, brick built trees, so that I can make them as large or small as I need, or any color I want. However, I do like the one-piecers for background fill (if it's out of focus), or, as was said, for manicured lawn type of settings. The one bad thing about custom built trees, is that they tend to take a lot of pieces and leaves, which cost a fair bit of money, for a substantial amount of trees...which is why I can only make about 2-3 of them at the moment. mini/blankexpression

Re: Whatever happened to the trees?

They were abducted by aliens.

Anyway, I don't really see the problem.  If you don't have any "classic" trees you can easily build your own cutom ones, or buy some off PaB or Bricklink.  There are loads of ways to make custom trees (this is probably something I would do in any case, though I haven't ever needed to use trees in any of my brickfilms thus far...).  Besides, with custom trees, you can easily vary the size, shape, and colour of the leaves (especially with the new dark red and olive green leaf elements), which you could never do with the pre-moulded trees.  And frankly, this is far from being at the top of my LEGO-related problems list...
