Topic: A Huge Problem with an upcoming DC Animated Movie

So I just saw a sneak peak of "Justice League: War" on Youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DkKOp45c9U

If you listen closely you will notice that "Shazam (Captain Marvel)" is going to have a part of it....... mini/eek ... mini/madhead

I then calmed down and thought: What if he is not one of the founding members? Sadly I have found out that Aquaman was removed as done by the people developing the film and Captain Marvel is going to be replacing him. mini/madhead WHAT!?

Okay seriously!!! As if replacing Martian Manhunter with Cyborg was bad enough. Though Cyborg is more Teen Titans material, at least he does have interesting qualities about his character and capabilities. Captain Marvel is literally more boring than the campiest version of Aquaman, literally! His origin is boring since having all magic based powers is like saying "I'm cheating to get what I want." I can't relate to him. I relate to Superman, the power-house scientifically plausible alien, more than Shazam.

Let's just hope that this sort of decision is never to be made by DC again. I mean they have been altering the character casting of the main members of the Justice League forever. Having Captain Marvel as one of the founding members is the worst alteration I have ever come across. I would say the ideal casting from here onward should be as shown in my LEGO Justice League image below:

Tell me what you think below. Also tell me if you think that the casting above is ideal for the Live Action Justice League Film to be coming out in 2017.

Is that not what the normal Justice League is? (I'm not a comics fan, so I might be missing something huge here.) They said this is a complete reinventing of it. So why have the same Justice League as before? Take away some characters and add new ones, I don't understand the problem.

The problem is that the original characters were the most fitting because their arrangement is so diverse in color and quality of character. By adding another big fly boy that has similar strength of Superman is breaking apart that diversity.

But they're changing their personalities, so he'll probably be very different from Superman.

But as I said before, I know nothing about Justice League. So my opinion might be uninformed, and not in context.

Re: A Huge Problem with an upcoming DC Animated Movie

I'm a huge fan of DC, and I'm glad they're constantly changing the line-up. I think it makes it a lot more interesting, and gives other, perhaps less-known characters a chance to shine. Having Cyborg in the New 52 JL line-up was fantastic - there was nothing bad about it at all, in my opinion.

It's exactly the same with Man of Steel. People complain that they changed too much of the comic literature, but doing so was a smart move. Kryptonite wouldn't work for a modern audience. Neither would the Terrence Stamp Zod, or Superman's boy-scout "I can do anything"/"I can uphold a totally pure sense of morality" attitude. Plus, it made Superman a lot more interesting.

If you read the best comics, they're always the Elseworlds/alternate universe runs, or the retcons - Superman: Earth One and the New 52 Justice League respectively (especially War for the Throne of Atlantis).

I'm afraid they weren't. The Blackest Night line-up was the best: Flash, Mera and Atom. Simple and straightforward, and not as hugely overpowered as Superman and Green Lantern (not that they don't work in the JL, I just think heroes with fewer and less potent powers makes them a little more relatable for the audience).

Yes, Shazam's powers are a little too close to Superman's, but Martian Manhunter's exactly the same. He has all of Superman's powers, plus shapeshifting, psionics and invisibility.

I would agree with you on all of that.

Actually in many interpretations, he doesn't have the heat vision which I am very thankful for. Why would 2 species (Kryptonian and Martian) from 2 different planets that are 10s of light years away have such a similar capability?

If I were able to alter what the writers set out for the character, I think all that I would have him keep would be the "clay physics"(allowing him to shape-shift and travel through nooks, crannies, and pipes), "strength", maybe "flight", and "mind-reading" and that would be it.

Re: A Huge Problem with an upcoming DC Animated Movie

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Re: A Huge Problem with an upcoming DC Animated Movie

They could be bringing in Shazam for an expendable character who can die in the first movie or future ones.  Maybe his death would be like Coulson's in the avengers, the action that brings everyone together.  I hope not though, because one of the worst things they could do with this is copy avengers.
