2001: A Space Odyssey
So I had only seen this once before and I decided it was one of my favorite movies ever made but my family never wants to watch it because it's creepy and none of them have ever read the book so they don't understand it so I just went to this old theater where they show old films and I watched it on the big screen and it was SO BEAUTIFUL
like since it was already a favorite movie before i'd just say it's even more favorite.
2001: A Space Odyssey is so beautiful in the cinema. It's absolutely majestic and wonderful.
Wow, the mention of Audrey Hepburn got the most responses I have ever seen in this thread, why are we all so obsessed with her? Maybe she deserves her own thread? Once I went to this tiny tea house place with my family and all the decorations were Audrey Hepburn themed. The restaurant was run by like two ancient ladies and I swear they were part of a Hepburn cult or something, it was actually really scary.

My watching of My Fair Lady was actually completely unrelated to Walter watching Roman Holiday. He he
[Lee Daniels] The Butler (2013)
A gem.
A historical drama that rises above the rest. The performances of the cast are beautiful...all except for Robin Williams as Eisenhower. Neither me nor my mom could take Williams' casting and his performance seriously.

Hopefully it's better than Redtails. That movie was a complete disgrace to the Tuskegee Airmen (I know The Butler isn't about that, but it has similar content).
Epic (2013)
I love animated films. This one had a nice, original concept. More so that other ones currently out there. *cough*Planes*cough*
The Campaign (2011)
A funny movie. I enjoy Will Ferrell movies.
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
I never saw this film before, but I'm glad I have now. Definitely a movie worth watching! I will definitely be checking ut more Wright & Pegg films.
Vacation (1983)
Here's some great comedy! Chevy Chase isn't the funniest guy alive, but this has to be the funniest family comedy of the 20th century!

Alien saga (except Prometheus)
The original is definitely the best, one of my favourite movies. It takes its time to make things happen (something many movies nowadays don't do, although that's not always a bad thing), for an hour it even appears as if nothing's really going on, but as a matter of fact, that's not true. Some effects may result outdated, but all that matters is that they're effective, and they do their job very well. The actors don't disappoint, Ian Holm is the best. Everything works.
Some say the second is better than the original, but I can't really see how. Sure, it's great, but I wasn't left with the same sense of wonder as in the first. Well, done, better special effects, the acting... well, some of the marines were just too stereotyped for my tastes, but otherwise it has solid acting. It's still a great movie.
Contrary to what many people say, I actually quite liked the third one. Not as good as the other two, but it made a few brave choices, that others wouldn't have dared to, and I admire that.
Yes, I'm talking about killing the 3 good guys of the second.
It was quite strange to see that the special effects were better in the previous chapter than in this one. Anyway, I thought it was an entertaining movie, I was actually interested in what was going on, although I kinda knew all the tricks and what was coming.
Finally, the last. I've read many reviews, by the people and by critics that say this is slightly better than the third. I don't know which movie they've seen, but the one I saw was horrible. Really, I couldn't believe what I was watching. At times I wanted to just leave, but I told myself I HAD to watch it 'till the end.
It's not that it was actually a bad movie, it was well done technically, has interesting cinematography, even well acted (I love Brad Dourif), but it was not an Alien movie. It would be different if it had a different title and a different monster, but as an Alien movie it doesn't work at all, it wasn't what I wanted to see, it didn't have the elements I want to see when looking at an Alien movie. The pacing and the mood were all wrong, except for one or two scenes. I wasn't expecting much from it, but it was still a big disappointment.

Dredd.
I liked this film.
Hot Fuzz (2007)
What an awesome film!
My Sucky Teen Romance
apparently this was directed by an alumni of the high school I'm at. It was pretty good, but the screenplay and acting needed work. cinematography and special effects were amazing, it's really hard to believe they made this on a $8000 budget. It was hilarious but it lacked substance; nevertheless, it was about as good as any sort of "teen comedy" thing.
3 O clock High
This was actually quite fascinating. It's actually pretty dark once you get past the cheesy 80s music. I wasn't expecting but hoping for a kind of darker ending, but because it was made in the 80s I knew that wouldn't happen.
like if he actually killed Buddy Ravel in the final fight?...
For Richer or Poorer (1997)
Tim Allen did a good job on Home Improvement. But, he's lost his charm. And it kind of started with all those Santa Claus movies. I did think the snippy arguments between him and Kirstie Alley were kind of amusing, though. And Larry Miller's performance was hilarious. But, the storyline didn't really interest me.

Despicable Me 2 (2013)
Here's one--of very few--good animated sequels. This was a pretty good watch, for a kids' movie. There was some kiddie humour, and some funny parts for the adults, too. Now, that's what I look for in an animated film: stuff that will keep the adults and the kids interested. And I think Despicable Me 2 does a good job with that.

Anti-Trust (2000)
Not that bad. I mean, it has an interesting storyline. But, the way they executed it was weird and boring. Had this been a book, maybe it would have interested me a bit more. But, I did enjoy Tim Robbins' performance. Among this bad cast, and bad acting, Robbins actually did an OK job.

Plus, it stars Don Knotts. Gotta love that guy.
That Don Knotts is awesome. His performances on the Andy Griffith Show were hilarious.
Elysium
OK, its not bad. But...this isn't how I like my Sci-Fi.
I hated Total Recall (no, not the original that had quirkiness, a suprisingly well done plot, and satirical overtones - the vile 2012 remake that had none of that) because it did stuff that morally I disagree with. Its exactly the same case here. Elysium is one of those stupid films that are clearly trying to tell a straight-faced political message and mess it up because its trying to mix blockbuster with parable.
You see, blockbusters take place in a morally black and white world. The villan is unquestionably, irredeemably evil - the hero is a flawless role model. There is nothing wrong with this, but when you try to make a political statement about the real world within this world, you fail because of the clash between morally black/white, and a very grey reality.
Poverty exists because we live in a 'survival of the fittest' world. If your rich, its either because you've done something to get rich, or your family is rich. Once your rich, you become entitled and can acess many privallages. When your poor, its either because you've been careless, you've lost your money for reasons beyond your control, or your family is poor. When you are poor, it becomes more and more difficult to get rich again because you have no entitlement. You have no power or significance in the world.
Its unfair - very unfair - but its something that cannot be changed. Unless you reduce the population of Earth down to just one person, there is always going to be a hierarchy, and thus there will always be a bottom. You cannot 'cure' poverty. You can help people, you can make a few peoples lives less miserable (and you should do that if you get the chance) but the world is just too complicated to solve it once and for all.
I await the sequel to this film, where we see that Elysium has become overcrowded, and Earth has become extremely decadent. Because soon the government are going to run out of money because there are too many people trying to get healthcare, and too many people trying to live on the station.
This could have been a really intelligent film if it actually had the tiniest shred of self-awareness. But I don't think the writer/director knows what that word means
What I hate is the one-dimensional portrayl of this films antagonists when the poverty was not their fault. The Earth became overcrowded, there was not enough healthcare or resources available so they became expensive and difficult to obtain - thus only the rich could escape. The rich were simply lucky, the poor were unlucky. This film however, makes it appear that rich people are all Bond-Villans. The evil executive of the factory (who went to the same acting school as the general from Avatar - an acting school that desperately needs to have its fundings cut) even at one point asks a person to not breathe on him, and when faced with a man who's taken a full dose of radiation says "take him away. If his skin falls off, I don't want to have to clean the sheets" Oh, and he listens to classical music - because apparently Handel is evil.
What I also hated was the portrayl of race. The rich are mostly European, the poor are a mostly Mexican, and our hero is the only white American in the damn film - as if having a Mexican, Indian, African, Arab, Native American, or Latino hero wouldn't make us sympathise with his plight. Am I the only one who finds this all slightly racist?
Oh, and the cinematography sucks. Shakycam and hyper-editing refuse to step down the same way Thatcher and Bush did. Clear effort has been put into the production design, but you can't see it because the camera is so close, the images cut so quickly, and the image is blurred by all the movement. I forget what the action was like in this film because I couldn't bloody see any of it. I looked carefully, and I don't think there was a single shot in this film where the camera had been mounted on a tripod or steadycam contraption. I thought that since Dredd and Skyfall Hollywood had re-learnt how to shoot their films correctly - but there I go foolishly overestimating the mainstream film industry again.
District 9 was severely flawed, but Elysium has made me appreciate it more. Yes, the politcal messages are just as slapdash and obvious, but there is actual characerisation. The protagonist and the alien learn from each-other, and understand their cultures. We come to like the protagonist despite him starting off as a bit of a horrid person. He's not a 'chosen one' who is 'destined to save humanity'. And the film actually ends on an ambigious, open note - which is extremely rare for Hollywood who like to either tie up everything with a pretty bow or leave it gushing open so a sequel can squeeze its way in.
This is just a dumb action sci-fi film.....in my opinion....
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
I really enjoyed this one! I'd been hearing a lot of good things about this film for years, so I decided to watch it yesterday, and I think it's just as good as it was hyped to be. I normally have problems watching movies of this nature (I cannot stand to watch really awkward situations) but this movie was good enough that that didn't matter most of the time.
Hobgoblins
Wow, this was an AWFUL movie. Even though it was ripping off Gremlins, a very silly movie in its own right, this just threw that out the window for absolute mediocrity. I don't know how it can get worse than this.
Hobgoblins 2
Oh God. It got worse.
I imagine the thought process behind this was "Lets make a new Hobgoblins, but parody everything bad about the first one! Comedy Gold!" But, instead of just parodying the badness, they also replicate it to a tee.
EEeeeeugghh.

The Hobbit : An unexpected Journey
Em, if you have not read the book, you can enjoy the film. Not saying the film wasn't bad, I just don't like how Peter slaughtered the book.
Men In Black
Love this film.
