Rear Window

This was yet another genius film by Alfred Hitchcock.

The fact that the whole duration of the film takes place in a single setting is astounding. While this may not seem appealing, I assure you, I was definitely intrigued and was on the edge of my seat for most, if not all, of the film.

Though I am biased towards Hitchcock, I give this film 5/5 stars. Also, it stars James Steward, you can't beat James Steward.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Just saw Pacific Rim. One of the best action movies I've seen.

Oh sweet Jesus that was awesome.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

WELL I JUST WATCHED SUPER 8 AND FIRSTLY THAT WAS SO AWESOME AND IM TOTALLY PUMPED TO WRITE MY SCREENPLAY NOW

and secondly elle fanning is a cutie pie and if anyone says otherwise you're wrong

I watched other stuff too. Like Casino Royale which I didn't like. It was my first Janes Bod movie though, and I'd like to watch some of the older ones because Ian Fleming is cool. Which do you guys think is the best?

Wow. I had a celebrity crush on her in the 6th Grade. Heh...

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

The Conjuring

As a person who has never loved the horror genre because it feels almost completely ruined by cliches (not that other genres are much better) this movie was a breath of fresh air. Unlike other horror movies that others claim to be somewhat decent like Sinister or Insidious this movie actually has tension thick enough to fill a room and keeps you at the edge of your seat wanting more. I feel like this is easily the best horror movie in the last ten years. 8/10

Had? HAD?!!
Actually when I was in sixth grade I had no idea who she was because the first film I saw her in was We Bought a Zoo which is pretty recent? Idk it's not really a crush I just think she is really adorable and she is also an amazing actor (look up Leaning Towards Solace, it's a short film that's just.. Woow)

Casino Royale is the best IMO. Skyfall, Gold Finger and GoldenEye were good too.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Sssshhhhh no elle is 10000000x more adorable than Dakota and also she is a better actor shhh

Also wow. If Casino Royale is the best then I can't expect to like much of that series, as I didn't like that one. Perhaps you have different taste in movies (and people named Fanning) because I would prefer maybe one with less action and more... Idk mystery and stuff. I'm sure ill prefer the older ones. Dr no sounds nice.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Best in the Bond series is difficult to gauge because every time they switch actors the style of film changes with them. Connery's and Craig's films could easily have been different franchises, were it not for the shared character names.

Dr. No is fun, by the way. Not really mysterious, but entertaining nonetheless.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I enjoy every Bond film, because in the good one's I can sit back and have fun - and in the bad Bond films I can play 'James Bond Bingo'. Its like 'Tim Burton Bingo' only its not over in the first five seconds of the film. (Seriously, someone needs to start up a 'Film Bingo' business. Its like a drinking game only nerdier)

Speaking of drinking games:

The Worlds End

Hey, did you like those scenes in Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead where they did stuff in pubs? Well, we made a movie filled with just that!

OK, OK...its a good film. Obviously not as good as Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg's previous lovechildren, but its worth your time. The problem is that the humour in this film comes from the sub-plots, not the actual main plot. In Shaun of the Dead, there was already stuff going on before the Zombies came - but when the Zombies came then suddenly everything changed. In Hot Fuzz things began ridiculous and kept going and going until the glorious climax. Here, the disaster gets introduced slightly before the half-way point...and it kind of stays in the background until the end - and even in the end its more like "Oh, you came in for some ridiculous fun and over-the-top humour? TOUGH! Just because every single film Edgar Wright has ever made/produced has over-the-top humour doesn't mean this one should....right?"

Speaking of Shaun of the Dead, stop me if any of this sounds familiar: a guy with a really crappy life who refuses to take responsibility is forced to take responsibility...but he can't so he desperately searches for the nearest pub even though he knows the pub will provide nothing and he should probably actually take responsibility now - but he never does.

You see, this film has a lot of problems with tone and direction. Simon Pegg's character is actually pretty tragic, and, when precisely what he's gotten up to after leaving school is revealed, it might hit a little too close to home for people like me who have friends/relatives in a similar situation. Each individual characters sub-plot is interesting and funny, but in the end they are sub-plots. The previous films in this trilogy balanced fairly ordinary sub-plots with a main plot that parodied a genre. This film is a straight-faced apocalypse film (not a very good one either) with fairly ordinary sub-plots dropped in. The epilogue is literally the only time we even come close to parody.

Spoiler (click to read)

I didn't like the ending. Not only did it feel like it had been re-shot, but it actually hinted at a much better film. Apocalypse films have been done to death, so there is absolutely nothing to work with. Post Apocalypse however - there is SO much material here. There are enough post-apocalypse films to parody the sub-genre, but not enough to make it seem just as tired as the serious films.

Also, the action scenes are kind of like Scott Pilgrim vs The World in that they are not actually funny or clever. I absolutely hate Scott Pilgrim - for many reasons which I will not go into right now because I don't want to go off-topic. But there is one reason I will point out - because its the same problem with this film: when the action happens, the humour stops dead in its tracks. Shaun hitting zombies in time to 'Don't Stop Me Now', Angel jumping in the air firing two pistols, Shaun throwing his record collection at zombies whilst deciding which ones are worth saving, Angel smashing up a quaint English village with stunts you see in Hollywood Blockbusters - these are all hilarious. The best we get in The Worlds End is robots getting dismembered and a bar-fight, none of which are funny (I know its a tradition for this trilogy to have an action-scene in the pub - but it shouldn't be your main set-piece, especially considering that Shaun of the Dead's main set-piece was also a bar-fight)

Paul is a much more worthy instalment to the trilogy than this. Its not as funny (the only problem with Paul is that it lacks humour) but its much more in the spirit of the previous two films. The Worlds End feels like Pegg and Wright wanted to do something different, which is absolutely fine...but then why is it part of this trilogy?

As I said though, I believe this is still worth your time. Its still funny, its still compelling, but disown it from Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead - because aside from the points where it rips the two films off, its a completely different film. Its more like Attack the Block...maybe this should have been called Attack the Pub.

On the subject of Bond films, I like Casino Royale, but it should be worth noting that it's quite different from any previous Bond film in that it's a lot grittier and more serious.  Quantum of Solace is pretty meh in my opinion, though.  My personal favourite classic Bond films is Thunderball.  If you want quintessential James Bond, then Goldfinger is also worth checking out.

I'll probably regret asking this... but why do you hate Scott Pilgrim?

All the Bond films (That I've seen, btw) have immense loads of action, including the older films. While not as prevalent in the older films, there is still a ton of action throughout the film.

And Elle just looks so young. I'm not a big fan of the Fannings, but Dakota at least looks like she's in her late teens/early 20's.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I'm absolutely curious to know why you don't like Scott Pilgrim. I really liked it, but I also like hearing different poit of views on movies.

Sorry to prolong this discussion lol but actually that doesn't really bother me because I am the same age as Elle Fanning. But it would be majorly creepy for a older dude lololol

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Rise of the Guardians

I'm not really sure what exactly to think about this film because it did a lot of good stuff, but it also did a lot of not so good stuff, so it's really hard to tell and I have no idea what to make of it.

The idea of making Holiday characters like Santa be explained in a detailed way with some interesting takes or ideas on the character has been done to death and I'm really tired of it now.

But, on the other hand, I really like the idea of a Russian Santa.  He really reminds me of the Heavy Weapons Guy.

Having the Boogieman be the villain is too typical.  It would've been more interesting to have him be one of the good guys and have one of the other be evil, and Boogie would just scare more for fun than villainy.  Also, Boogieman is hard to take seriously because it makes me think disco.  Bogeyman is a much better name. And why does he even exist? they never explained that

But I really liked his design, and he looked especially cool against a colourless cloudy sky.
Even if his hands were not correctly green.

Why is the Easter Bunny a stereotypical Australian?  And do people really need to make every Australian character be obsessed with boomerangs?

Jack Frost way a nice character, so was the tooth fairy.

But if Jack brings Winter and ice, then why was that lake frozen before he became himself?

There were several typical kids movies jokes that didn't need to be there.

But the animation was really good.

I just don't think that these people need to be on some saving the world team.
But the story is actually kinda good, I don't know.

I think that this should've been set in a fantasy world with similar characters, but not actually supposed to directly be holiday characters so we don't have to go through that whole thing again.  It would be interesting to see it that way.

Oblivion

The story wasn't the most original, but the cinematography was amazing. The soundtrack was wonderful, too.
