2) Most people use the "channel trailer" as a featured video, it's essentially the same exact thing, but the description shows to the right. No there is no way to get anything else to show up in that place, annoyingly. There are not very many customization options. Honestly, I would just use it, and put whatever video you would have featured on your channel before in that place, that's what I'm doing.

1) To move the section where all your playlists are listed from the bottom to the top, hover over it and there will be an arrow in the top right corner next to the edit symbol. Clicking on the arrow will move it up a level, so use that repeatedly until it's in the location you want.

Backyard Legos [sic], thanks much for your help!  I'll just make the HOO ep 2 commercial my "channel trailer".  Also, thanks for the playlist advice.  As for the banner artwork, I just got the default dimensions and I'd like to make my own custom banner, rather than some cookie-cutter templates.  I similarly hate all those videos that use the windows movie maker default light blue with white text that you see everywhere on YT.

GHB> If your head is going to explode, wrap it in duct tape first.  This won't keep your head from exploding, but at least all the parts will be together and in the proper relative position.  This way, when you go to the doctor, and he says, "Looks like we got another youtuber", it will be a lot less trouble for him to put your head back together.

I think you misunderstood. The template is just a .psd that has guidelines showing the resolution of each of the different areas of the banner, say the TV and the phone and tablet dimensions; and shows the save are where you can put a logo so that it will never be cut off; it's not a here's what your banner should look like sort of thing.
