Well, there's software that comes with it that allows you to focus it manually. You still have to disable auto exposure and focus. Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be glad to help. Oh and there is a light on the front of it that you're gonna want to cover up.
There are many good Logitech webcams for mac. However, none of them have manual focus on there own. You'll need to download a program called Webcam Settings which can be found in the app store for $7.99. It allows you to control your webcam's exposure, white balance, focus, and much more.
For the webcams, here are some good ones for mac. I have a mac, and I use the Logitech c910, but I hope to get the c920 soon.

The c910 has up to 10 megapixels, and the c920 has up to 15, so yes, the c920
is much better in quality. However, it costs a bit more than a usual webcam. Also, Webcam Settings has nothing to do with exporting, or capturing the frames. That's what your frame grabber program is for. (If you have one) You just open Webcam Settings while your filming and you can control the appearance, focus, white balance, etc, of your image in the frame grabber. Hope that helps.
EDIT: Yes, I do use Webcam Settings along with my other program.

Well it can be found on amazon Here. It does only have 10 mp but more expensive versions go up to 12.

Well this is from a while ago, the lighting stinks, and I was only using 640 x 480 but here it is: Flickr Link
I was forced to use 480 x 640 because monkey jam couldn't go higher without making it about twice as large as my monitor.

got a c920 epic
Ok I have sam animation and I want to shoot photos in 720 with my c920. However, so far I can't get it to shoot 720. It will only do 420. Does anybody use sam animation and shoot in 720? Help, please!
The software may not support that quality.

I use SAM, and when I shoot, I shoot at 640 X 480, then export it in HD. Did you buy the full version of SAM?
Really, you should just take the plunge and buy iStopmotion. It's a widely known and professionally used piece of software with a nice eye friendly interface, a good and dedicated team of developers that aren't going anywhere anytime soon, a forum to inquire about any issues, plus it has a ton of features, especially 1080p export amongst other things. For the $30 you spent on the obscure SAM animation, you could have saved up another twenty and gotten iStopmotion. Odd.

yes I have the full version. So maybe Im doing something wrong.

Yes that Is true. Unfortunately I didn't buy it, I got it free with a book. So that is why I have sam instead of iStopmotion.
