This is real hard to do but it looks pretty good.
Alternatively you could use plastic wrap and mess around with it until it looks proper.

I liked your wave breaking technique and Hickox's waves
I have actually used the brick wave technique, and then created 3 sets of waves and then looped the waves in after effects for a beach scene that didn't have any other animation in the water, it let me animate one thing at a time and looks really good.
