Topic: How to Use Pythagorean Theorem to Shoot Your Brickfilm at an Angle

Hey.  I used math to shoot a few scenes of my first brickfilm (available on a playlist at youtube.com/holdingourown) at an angle.  I thought my technique idea might help others who built a Lego camera brace, but want to secure it at an angle.  The video also explains the Pythagorean Theorem to those who may not know it, and goes through everything step-by-step.  If you know the math, that part may be redundant, but at least you may find the application of it helpful.

The video can be seen at

I hope someone finds this resource a valuable tool in their animation.

I turned it off at the word math... just kidding Great video. Helped a lot with angles!

Re: How to Use Pythagorean Theorem to Shoot Your Brickfilm at an Angle

Yep, my brain just exploded. mini/XD
Seems a little complicated, and it can be done in easier ways, but thanks for sharing anyway.

Sometimes I attach the corner of the camera to a 1X1 plate and spin it back and forth until it fits on another 1X1 plate, or a jumper plate (Depending on the angle) and then reinforce it with tiles. But most of the time I just attach a 6X10 plate to the bottom of the camera rig and simply don't attach it on the set. As long as it isn't bumped, it works just fine.....
It's also so easy a cave man can do it. mini/lol

EDIT: (You guys do realize that I'm kidding right? The way he explained it made it very clear, but it's not even complicated in the first place.)

C'mon guys. I suck at math and this was easy to follow for me. mini/tongue
It's an interesting use for math. I always made brickfilms with a QC9000 and my Lego rig made it very difficult to film at different angles. Though, I just used alot of tape to tape the whole camera down to my plate.

Something VERY FUNNY with YouTube's processing of the video:
There are icons below the video to rate, and etc.
Now, the last icon that shows up on my browser is INTERACTIVE TRANSCRIPT.
Watch the video again with that transcript ON, and watch the hilarity as youtube's AI tries to turn my voice into text and FAILS!  LOL, or whatever texting term you prefer.

Clever, but blutack.

That was cool man! I never thought of that before. Sure there are other easier ways to do this, but it is still very cool you figured this out.

Re: How to Use Pythagorean Theorem to Shoot Your Brickfilm at an Angle

Okay, so I used to HATE bircckfilming with that cradle thing I made, because I could only do boring angles. I never thought of doing it this way, although I already knew all the math stuff. So thanks so much!
Also the auto transcribe is bloody hilarious. mini/smile

You do realize that the interactive transcript is accurate only 2% of the time?

And great video! I'm trying to figure out angles and the video helps a lot!

That was the first time I used the interactive transcript.  I'm sure I can watch videos with it all day long and never get tired of its flawed technology!

Re: How to Use Pythagorean Theorem to Shoot Your Brickfilm at an Angle

Not bad application of a simple mathematical concept, but it does limit you to only a few possible angles. Personally, I just build my sets so that I can have the camera on my desk, and then just sticky-tack the camera down. But yes, if you have a set built on a large, deep baseplate that isn't being used fully, then this does work.

Re: How to Use Pythagorean Theorem to Shoot Your Brickfilm at an Angle

it's a pretty good angle, though.  This particular example gives an angle that is 1/16 of the circumference of a circle.

"Lego Brickfilm"

As if there's any other kind of brickfilm? mini/tongue

A pretty cool tutorial. The explanation was perhaps a little long-winded but I liked the concept.

Maybe there are other kinds of BrickFilms.  Like.... and I recoil whenever I try to say... those... accursed... M*** Block BrickFilms.  Of course, any story animated with... those... accursed... M*** Blocks would have inferior stories, dumb voices, and they will probably fall apart before the end.

Thanks, guy.  The video is also a special feature on my Holding Our Own: The Complete First Episode DVD.
