Topic: Need assistance with post production, for adobe after effects. [DESC]

Hey everyone,

I've been working on a script for a movie for some time, now I have a question about several lego film's I've watched I've noticed Lego's watching the news or going on a computer and booting it on, now I wanted to know how I can achieve this I have adobe after effects CS4 and would really appreciate an answer,

Please don't tell me to check on youtube, as I have had no luck, the best example would be ''The Button'' I really liked how he was watching the news and how its playing while his watching it, this is what I would like to achieve, any assistance would be ecstatic!

Thanks in advance.

Can you clarify on what you're talking about?

Lego's watching the news or going on a computer and booting it on, now I wanted to know how I can achieve

You mean superimposing an image or video on top of another image or video, scaling, rotating, position and skewing it to align with whatever object you have representing a screen so it matches the perspective?

I just gave you some keywords, guess where we're going to tell you to look up the technique? mini/wink mini/tongue

It's all about knowing the right keywords.

YES exactly that, I’ll just clarify what i was trying to say even though you got all of it in the most sophisticated way possible well done lol, but anyhow if you seen ‘’’The Button’’ in the beginning the security guard, is watching the news or something on tv I want to make something like that, and please lechnology help me out if you can! I’d really appreciate it, or if someone else can if you don’t know though I hope you know, and please don’t leave me hanging to look up the technique I know I’ll never find it, help me Lechnology!

Well, assuming you know how to position, rotate, and scale an image in After effects, the technique speaks for itself.  Position, rotate, and scale the image onto the location of where the screen in your main footage will be.  It's like placing a small paper onto a specific spot of a larger paper.  Alternatively, you can use the Corner Pin filter in After Effects and just drag the corners to their corresponding location.  Now if the fig is in front of the screen, then you're getting into masking.  At this point, we'd have to gauge how much you know before we make anymore suggestions for you.

Ohh ok, firstly thank you for your reply, however Lechnology I don't really know how to use after effects (CS4), I understand little bits of after effects such as putting the film or images into the time frame and such but as for scaling and stuff I do not know, are you able to tell me how I can achieve this goal of putting in an image sequence then bringing in an avi file which will be for the tv and putting it into the image sequence how can I achieve this and what do you mean by masking if his infront of the screen what if his in front of it but does not interfere with the screen will there be need for masking? I know a bit on masking not much but a small portion.

Re: Need assistance with post production, for adobe after effects. [DESC]

1. Bring in base footage of tv with no overlay.
2. Bring in image sequence/footage that you want on the tv.
[optional] 3. track the tv screen (only if the footage is moving)
4. add a corner pin effect to the footage for the tv
5. position each corner on the corners of your screen.
[optional] 6. if there is anything that walks in front of your tv screen image, you will need to mask the foreground objects. to do this, duplicate your base footage and layer it above the tv footage, then get the pen/mask tool, and draw around the foreground objects, frame by frame if necessary, then set the operation to ADD.

I think it would help everyone if you, Generalned, get your hands dirty, so to speak.  Play with all the effects, click buttons you see on the timeline or on the videos or images you add to it.  Enable Tips on Start up and read them, search the Help Topics that comes with After Effects.  Don't be afraid, it's not going to blow up your computer if you tried.

By all means, you can ask questions, but if you had tried playing around with After Effects, you would have gotten your answers fast instead of waiting on strangers across the globe to answer your question.

@Rsteenoven thank you very much for your helpful insight I appreciate it mate, I'm going to use your guide the next time I shoot the film and see how I go, sorry for the late reply as well.

@Lechnology I have fiddled around with it and looked up tutorials though I had no luck on finding what I needed also it cost me a fortune and as off that instead of wasting time fiddling I wanted to get answers from experienced people, thank you anyway for your replies and I appreciate your concern, also I apologise for the delayed response I had no Internet the past 3 days.

Thanks again guys!
