Topic: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

Here is breaking news.  This is the most important news for a Star Wars fan, ever.
"Bob Iger just announced that The Walt Disney Company is acquiring Lucasfilm – the global entertainment company founded by George Lucas and the home of the legendary Star Wars franchise. In addition to getting the rights to one of the greatest family franchises and epic stories of all time, Disney is also acquiring all of Lucasfilm’s operating businesses – including Industrial Light and Magic and Skywalker Sound."

I really don't like this news at all, Disney does way too many sequels and *insert your opinion here* ruin Star Wars mini/troll
ALSO, THEY ARE GOING TO MAKE STAR WARS EPISODES 7,8, AND 9!

"Fans can expect a new feature film, Star Wars Episode 7, in theaters worldwide in 2015. George Lucas will serve as creative consultant on the film and Kathleen Kennedy, the filmmaker George handpicked to lead Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the rest of Lucasfilm into the future will be the executive producer (she’s also joining Disney as president of Lucasfilm). With this many characters to develop and stories to tell, Disney plans to release a new Star Wars feature film every two or three years for the foreseeable future."

For more info or sources look at:

I can't believe this.  Please leave your opinion of this.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

Too bad. Disney will probably ruin Star Wars, but all the media and addictions and such kind of already ruined it for me. It might actually be interesting to watch episodes 7, 8 and 9, though.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

Avengers vs Star Wars anyone? mini/lol

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

Oh, I don't like this one bit. As if the prequels were bad enough. mini/confused

Correction: Disney will ruin Star Wars. Disney now have the rights to the Avengers, Star Wars and Indiana Jones. If you thought Hollywood was scraping the bottom of the barrel before, with Die Hard 5 and Independence Day 2, then think again.

I like Indy and Star Wars just as much as the next guy (for Star Wars, probably more), but I don't want to see any more movies. At least not yet. And not under the Disney flag. They own too much of the industry already - I'd like to see a little more variation thanks, Walt.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

Skeptical, to say the least.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

They're just going to Disneyfy it a whole bunch. Although if the next Star Wars movie was a musical I would be very happy, I am just concerned that they will make it a really dumb action movie.
Don't sell your soul to Disney, that's what I always say.

Then don't watch it.

It could end badly, but not necessarily. I'm not judging this movie before there's any sort of trailer and basically no information about it.

I like Disney, and I like Lucasfilm, so it doesn't sound that bad to me.  Disney bought Pixar, and their films are still good.

They're just going to Disneyfy it a whole bunch.

The Avengers wasn't Disneyfied when Marvel was bought, nor was it anything less than fantastic (in my opinion).

Of course, this is all coming from a guy who actually enjoyed the prequel trilogy.

Now, what would be sad is John Williams not doing the score. mini/twitch

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

Eh. Personally I don't have much interest in seeing more Star Wars films (unless they do something dramatic like... stop making every main character a magic space wizard). I'm not a big enough fan to cry that they're going to ruin the series either. I mean, there are seven million extended universe novels/comics/shorts/encyclopedias/icouldothisallday. Lucas has been anything but strict on keeping people outside the film productions from adding material to the series. Frankly, some of them have done a much better job than he (or any of the sequels) has done. It does worry me that Disney seems to be buying up so many established entertainment companies, but we can't really do anything about that.

I don't follow Marvel comics as much as I used to, but their film productions haven't dropped in quality since Disney acquired them. I think the idea of "Disnification" is more related to how franchises are marketed than how their productions are managed.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

If the prequels weren't bad enough, 3 MORE SW movies that will probably be a boring action movie, with the man that made the amazing music for SW being dead, and considering how cheesy most Disney movies are nowadays (Disney channel ESPECIALLY), I do not think that SW episodes 7, 8, and 9 will be good movies. I might see them though, but ONLY for nostalgic purposes.
This summarizes my opinions: Disney WILL ruin Star Wars.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

I don't think we can say for sure whether it's going to ruin Star Wars, because technically it's already been ruined (Phantom Menace anyone?).  I think a fresh look may actually benefit the franchise, and who knows, Episode VII may actually be tolerable...

Nah, Phantom was almost entirely composed of politics and talking, Clones at least had more action and that Geonosis sequence.

This. I don't think more Star Wars films is a very good idea. What's more to tell? The bad guys died and the land was restored to peace...just like Lord of the Rings.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

I too think that everyone is jumping the gun on amusing that this is going to be terrible, I had the same immediate reaction. Let's just step back and actually think about this for a little bit. Here's some points I'd like to bring up:

1. Disney has a decent record making movies that aren't the "Disney" stereotype. Pirates of the Caribbean is the best example. Also, Disney has owned Marvel for three years, meaning not only are they entirely responsible for the Avengers, they also had a hand in the new Spider Man. (Wildly successful revamp of a failed trilogy seeming relevant to anybody?) Oh, and Iron Man 3 looks absolutely incredible, if a little bit like The Dark Knight.

2. Disney has a lot of money. As seen by Avengers, they are very capable of bringing in good actors actors to fill roles, so it's not likely that we'll have a repeat of Anakin  the plank of wood.

3. George Lucas isn't just dropping Star Wars in Disney's lap and and washing his hands of the franchise. While he's officially retiring, he's still going to be involved in the process, and the movies are going to be made on story that he himself planned out when he wrote the rest of the Star Wars plot line, so the movies won't be plots written by entirely other people. He's also leaving behind senior leadership that has been around for awhile, and I would think the chance of these people letting Disney run in completely different direction is pretty slim, especially since they'll still be operating under the LucasFilm title.

I'm not saying that Disney won't ruin Star Wars, I'm saying that they have the resources that LucasFilm didn't have that if used correctly will allow Disney to give one of the greatest stories of all time the revitalization that it deserves. Like Gorge Lucas said in the press release, someone has to take over for him eventually. It might as well be while he can still give advice, and at least Disney has the ability to do a decent job. Whether they do succeed or the whole thing goes up in flames remains to be seen, but we shouldn't enter with preconceived notions that Disney will fail.

@Mickey: There is more to tell, George Lucas has planned on another three movies since before the first one was even made, he just never got around to it, probably because of Indiana Jones.

Last thing: The magic of the first three films will never again be fully achieved, I think most people realize that, but I refuse to criticize a film before it has even entered per-production.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

The "magic" of the original trilogy in my opinion is the way that such a masterpiece was created with limited resources. Lucas was forced to make cuts because technology at the time wouldn't allow it. Then when the prequels came out he added every stupid idea that came to mind because, well, he could. Unless Star Wars goes indie again, a masterpiece like ANH will not be created.
#hipster mini/tongue

Also, WOW I didn't know that Disney owns Marvel! Figures, because these days they own everything. Studio Ghibli for example, I mean usually they don't mess it up too bad but for Arrietty they hired one of their obnoxious brat actors for the English dub and even put a really bad tween pop song in the credits. Subtle subliminal self-publicity is what I'm concerned about, not singing and dancing and crap. And also a lot of Disney's action movies are just bad. Like Journey to the Center of the Earth.

But srsly, the main reason I don't want this to happen is because there's too much that goes on afterwards and I don't think they could capture the story very well.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

My concern is that given that fans have been able to play in George Lucas' world for the past 35 year, using the sound effects, playing with his characters, etc. will we get the same leniency from a massive powerhouse like Disney?  Can I post a video of two guys fighting with lightsabers and not get smacked with a cease and desist just because I'm using lightsaber sound make from Disney-owned Skywalker Sound?

I hope Disney will be smart about this as they were with Marvel.

I'm bracing myself for the sudden dismissal of 34 years of EU continuity. It's sure going to be a thing. And that thing will be stuff. Total stuff.

I hope that doesn't happen. I doubt it will, though, since KOTOR, TOR and TFU have been such huge mini-franchises for the company, and are so easily recognised by the current generation of fans. Besides, they've confirmed it all as official canon stuff - if anything, I think we can expect an Heir to the Empire movie, or someting around that period.

That's probably partially down to the fact that the Avengers had been mostly finished by the time Disney acquired Marvel, although the movie didn't escape completely unscathed. Here in the UK, they wiped most of the special features from the DVD and only included them on the Blu-Ray (they were originally set to appear fully, or close to it, on both) and

Spoiler (click to read)

they edited Coulson's death scene, first taking away the end of Loki's spear that comes straight through his chest, and then all the bloodstains, so that in his big pondering scene with Captain America, Tony Stark is just looking at a blank wall

Now you may argue that those aren't signs of Disnyfication, but I think they are. If you read the Marvel Now! comics that just came out, they do are more happy-friendly than before, where everyone now seems to just suddenly get along and everything's right with the world. Blech. Let's go back to Dark Reign, thanks.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

"IT'S NOT POSSIBLE!"

episode VII shouldn't exist , They already explained everything in the books and the EU series , They're going to ruin this and i have no idea what Disney is doing. Although i do recall this worse than the power ranger licensing, But its probably fair that George Lucas is retiring and ready to sell Lucasfilms to Disney.
