Topic: Help: Buying a new computer

So yeah, my friend is looking to sell her computer. She told me it was more or less, "built" buy someone for her to do interior design imaging and graphics work and everything else. So I assume that should help push for video editing. I know absolutely nothing when it comes to the technical side of computers, so I was wondering if you guys could help me out.

- It's an ASUS, runs windows 7 64 bit
- Processor: Intel Core i5 CPU      750 @ 2.67GHz (don't know what that means)
and
- 6 GB of RAM

What else should I check out? And she's asking like 500 bucks for it. Which is hardly anything compared to what she paid for it. Thoughts?

EDIT: looked again and it also has NVIDIA Quadro FX 380 LP. (although I don't know what that is or does ha.)

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

Those are some pretty good specs. Could you tell me a little more of what you are trying to do? What video editor are you going to use on the computer?

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

I use an editor called Magix Movie Edit Pro. Nothin fancy, but i'm hoping to edit HD footage, which right now is close to impossible due to it bogging down and lagging so bad.

Magix Movie Edit Pro is my video editing software, I know alot about it mini/smile

So, you want to edit 1080p videos?

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

Yeah, I would now except my computer lags too bad to do it. I'm hoping this new computer will solve that.

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

What are the specs of your current computer? And btw 500 bucks sounds pretty good value for what your getting mini/smile

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

Oh and... How old is the computer?

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

The most important thing with running HD files is the RAM. I'm guessing a good processor helps, but the RAM is what
crashes if its running files too big for the computer. I'm not a tech expert, but I do know that 6GB is more than adequate (my laptop has 2GB, and it barely works with HD).

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

Hmm. It's not a bad deal, but 6 GB is not really an impressive amount of memory and I'm curious to know if the Intel core is 2nd or 3rd-gen. The video card you mentioned seems to be average, but workable. As someone who sells computers for a living, you can probably get more for your money elsewhere, but you could probably get by with this machine, especially if you add some more RAM.

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

Thanks guys for all the advice, I really appreciate it. The laptop I currently use has 4 gb of RAM, and so far it's not really workin' for me. Even working with non-hd footage, it lags really bad.
My current laptop is a Dell, Vista 64 bit. Intel Core2 Duo CPU, T6400 @ 2.00GHz with 4 gb ram.
However, someone directed me towards this instead:

Would this be a better buy?

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

My computer has 12GB of RAM and it works perfectly with 1080p videos on Magix.

Yes, I think so...

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

Jesus, 12 GB RAM? Did you have that added later on? I'm assuming the computer didn't come with it...

Also, you don't have any lagging issues of any kind on your computer Loic FB? Would you mind filling me in on the other specs of your computer as well?

Thanks again.

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

It's not that hard to find a computer that comes with 12 GB of RAM, you'll just pay more for it; the tend to have all around better specs, processors and the like.

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

I'd say the most important part of your computer, like others have said above, is RAM. For a quick comparison, my family's 2006 iMac has 1GB RAM, which is abysmal for performing even not-so complex tasks (editing on iMovie whilst searching on Safari with Pages open); compared to that, 6GB sounds pretty good, but remember, 8GB is becoming the new standard, and the more RAM you have, the faster and more able your computer will be. I myself, have 16GB of RAM on my rMBP, and to say the least, it is absolutely amazing compared to good ol' iMac... So I highly recommend upgrading your RAM.

No... and no mini/wink My computer is fast, I don't have any lagging issues.

It's a HP Pavilion HPE (Phoenix H9)...

The processor is an Intel Core i7-3770K (3rd generation)...

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

Do you mind me asking what you paid for it? Or possibly where I could get my greedy mitts on one? mini/bigsmile

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

I'm sure you could find a better deal on eBay, but I usually shop for technology on http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ . They are competitively priced and have an efficient search system (you can shop by RAM, price, processor type, etc.). Although it does sound like Loic F-B has a good computer model in mind...

Re: Help: Buying a new computer

That is a killer model... I searched a bit on the site you directed me at Packrat, and It looks like i'll be spending anywhere from 900-1300 bucks in order to get a computer with 12-16gb of RAM. ouch. Christmas is coming up I suppose... heh. The model Loic sent me towards is killer nice.

Seriously thanks for all the help guys! I appreciate it!
