I'm a mac user. And I've been talking with my dad about what image editor to get in order to do masking and lightsabers, and all that crap. He says he uses Acorn. I'ts $50 bucks, but I think I want to get it. Does anyone have any suggestions, or has anyone on the BiM community used this for brick filming?
I don't use Acorn, but I do use a free version of "pixelmator" (distributed by the company that makes it). It works great! I like the layout of it too. Aaaaannnd if I'm not mistaken, It's only 15 bucks.
-Edit- I checked out Acorn, and it looks pretty cool, like a cheap version of photoshop, and it's not a piece of junk.
-also why not consider pixelmator?

Sorry, not getting it.
I used GIMP for a looong time and it worked well for masking. I'd just try it, IT'S FREE!! 
I'm now getting AE for some newer stuff, but I think you should at least try GIMP. GIMP can do lightsabers, but it takes way longer than anything else. So for that, I use saberfx off the Mac App store...it's only 15$ and it makes great lightsabers and force lightning. I hope I helped!

Okay, then why did you ask us for advice if you are already completely sure about what software you are getting?
I also reccomend GIMP, it is a free software and is just as advanced as photoshop, except it is also open-source so you can download plugins and extra brushes for it.
If you are going to spend moneys on a piece of software I recommend getting a more advanced software that works for video effects as well, like After Effects. I don't have that so I don't know how well it would suit your purposes or how easy it is to learn, but just sayin'... 
GBH, it totally contradicts the purpose of your post if you have a stone-wall attitude to any suggestions other than Acorn. Acorn is good enough, but frankly, Pixelmator is far better (due to it always being updated, having a large community base, ease of use, and advanced features, and numerous Apple awards), and you should also consider GIMP. GIMP has recently been made native to the Mac eco-system, and it is a free, powerful photoshop alternative. Also, if your dad has Acorn, why can you not just copy his version onto your computer, instead of spending another $50?
Because I've just found out that I'm able to use it with brick filming. And yeah, I can get it for free now that my dad installed it. I didn't want any of this negative feedback. Ok?
That's totally your decision. The feedback was not negative, it was merely attempting to suggest some alternative options. The reason for the stark response, in my case, was that you, without explanation, totally refused any suggestions or critisims of Acorn. But in the end, it's your preference.
