Topic: iPod touch for animation

Ok, so I'm planning to buy the new iPod touch, 5th generation that should be coming out in a few weeks. I hear it might have a 5 mp camera. I'm excited, for one reason. I can do stop motions on it! The old iPod 4th generation only has 0.7 megapixels, not that good! I'm planning to get the StopMotionStudioPro app for it, which includes a ton of great stuff!

The only problem is the settings. I don't know if I'll be able to change them to manual. Any suggestions on whether I should use it for stop motion?

Re: iPod touch for animation

As far as I know, you can not switch the iPod's camera settings to manual.
And if that's true, then I would NOT recommend it.

Re: iPod touch for animation

Generally using a camera which is hilariously tiny (phone camera, iPod camera, tablet camera, etc) would be a reasonably bad idea. Yes, it might have 5mp but that's just a selling point that Apple has, in order to go all "woohey look at this, its camera is tons better than the older one" when it still in fact is just a newer version of it. It might have 5mp but it's not going to be usable for serious stuff, other than taking pictures of flowers. The optic is tiny, the lens is tiny, think of it as a digital camera but just tiny. It's not going to work out, so if you're buying it solely on using it as both a, well an iPod but also as a camera for your stopmotion, then reconsider because it will not be worth it.
If you're buying it on grounds of solely using it as a camera for stopmotion, use the money on a smaller digital camera, a webcamera or, well considering it's Apple which means it's generally a bit overpriced, a smaller DSLR.
Just my two cents, I've tried the new 5'th generation camera and I'm telling you, it's a fine camera but it's nothing for what you want to use it for. I took this picture of a Mercedes I'll be buying next week, let me just find it

That was taken with what is essentially a 5'th generation iPod camera. It might take beautiful pictures of flowers, cars, your cat but it won't be able to do macro stuff like doing it with minifigures.

Re: iPod touch for animation

I knew a bunch of you would say it's a pretty bad idea, but I have no other choices.

If you have no other choices, then there's really nothing to do. However, it's just not feasible to use an iPod camera as your main camera for stopmotion. You won't get high quality, your camera won't focus when that close to stuff, it's essentially useless. Sorry to burst your bubble but I don't think it's going to work out.

No, it's ok. I understand.

Re: iPod touch for animation

If you have a Mac, iStopmotion 3 has added support for iDevices (iPhone, iPad and iPod touch), so that may be the way to go. Do not use an in-house iPod stop motion app, whatever you do.

Re: iPod touch for animation

I've got a 4th-generation iPod Touch.

While it's handy if you want to take quick snaps of something, I certainly wouldn't recommend using it for stopmotion, unless you have absolutely no other option.  The camera is frankly primitive, it has no flash, you can't even focus it, the quality isn't the greatest, and there are virtually no camera settings of any sort (though some specialized camera apps might offer some--I wouldn't know).  Also, my iPod tends to run out of battery quite quickly. mini/madhead

So, all in all, it would be a lot better, in my opinion, to get a digital camera or webcam if you need a camera for stopmotion.

Re: iPod touch for animation

Yeah, I know where your coming from ^  I have the same iPod, and I made a quick stopmotion with the LEGO Super Heroes app, and the camera quality for that is NOT good.

@ Cosmonaut,
Do you know if there is any way to upgrade to iStopmotion 3?  I have iStopmotion 2...

Re: iPod touch for animation

@JonnDthunDer, if you have a Mac running OS X 10.6.6 or later, you'll have the Mac App Store. iStopmotion 3 is priced at $49.99 on the Mac App Store, which is a huge deal compared to the previous $500+ price tag. So it's an easy download from there. I believe that there is another payment option, called 'FastSpring', in which you can pay with Paypal, which is handy if you have a Mac running something previous to 10.6.6. Here's Boinx's payment page link:

Hope it helped!

And adding to my original point about the iPod touch, the current 4th generation, which I have, has an abysmal camera, not many tripod like stands or cases available, and it's battery life (at least with iOS 5.1) sucks. While I heed you to find another option, it is likely that the new iPod, which will be most definitely announced alongside the 6th generation iPhone on the September 12 event, will have a larger screen, better camera and a restored battery life. That said, I advise you to get a webcam or something else...

Re: iPod touch for animation

@ Comsmonaut
Thanks!  I'm afraid I won't be getting that anytime soon. I'm kinda broke at the moment.  I just ordered Adobe After Effects CS6....!!
Does anyone know if iStopmotion 2 has the ability to import audio so I could get the movements to match up better?

Re: iPod touch for animation

You know, with the money it would have taken to buy the iPod you could have gotten yourself a pretty good webcam, like the C910, which I got for 70 bucks, as opposed to the $200 for an iPod.

If you get a webcam, you will not have to worry about running out of battery on your camera. But the best part is that you won't have to worry as much about bumping your camera to take a picture, because whereas you would have to touch your iPod to take a picture, you won't' need to touch your webcam.
