Topic: A star wars series?

I want to make a star wars series, the problem is im pretty sure most of the people here hate them.

Or i heard at one point that it  was the easy way to go mini/confused

Anyway, i wanted to make a series with an actual story and not have that horrible action over 90% of them have.
You know, standing in the middle of a open field, no cover, they don't move, just stand there shooting back and forth and some how missing. The stories are always "the droids are coming!"

I want to have a good story, make the battles interesting and put actual effort into it, i also want to remove the clones and droids from the film, Because im getting really sick of clones and droids, i want my empire back mini/madhead

So, my question is what your opinion is on this? And can a decent story get past not having massive armies dem kids always seem to have? Because of those awful prequels i can't buy meh rebels and stormtroopers anymore mini/sad
Thoughts?

Re: A star wars series?

Personally, I like Star Wars brickfilms as long as they're done well. Assuming your animation can allow a story to flow without large, pointless battle scenes, then I say go for it.

However, if you're trying to make a series, am original idea would probably be preferred. The Star Wars universe has been done, time and again. Either make different characters that only make reference to the Star Wars theme, or just come up with something totally different; I'll always prefer new ideas to old ones, but I won't refuse to watch a Star Wars brickfilm as long as it's done well.

Re: A star wars series?

Okay, a thread about you wanting to create a story would go in the PRE-PRODUCTION thread. I feel sorry for the mods that must have better things to do then put topics in the right place. mini/no

Anyways, I'm not a fan of the prequels either. I think the stupid "clone wars" are the reason there's so many boring "clones blowing up everything around them" films like Solitary and 501st Legion. But, should you choose to avoid the nasty criticisms that follow, that's all right with me. It's your film and no one has the right to tell you what to make or what to have in your films.

Also, one thing to avoid is that scroll-up opening title at the beginning of almost every film. I find that obnoxious and a huge waste of time. It's usually a 45-second title to a 15-second clip of Darth Vader cutting off a stormtrooper's head and then saying "I hate this job". That usually picks up a bunch of lousy comments like "LOL" and "Subscribed".

Well, i do plan for there to be some new characters during the time of the new republic, but as it seems i got more clones and droids unfortunately so maybe just to tick people off less i might need to stick with the old republic. My animation is smooth enough to where your not flipping out but it isn't godly smooth. So yeah..

Wait this isn't pre production? I asked about people opinions on a star wars series that wasn't completely awful and repetitive? And asked if a good story would help a ton with the series?

Incase you want to buy a lot of rebels and stormies, bricklink.com is the way to get them cheap.
EDIT: The title of general film discussion is misleading. He probably thought this was a film ideas subforum.

Re: A star wars series?

Sure this is a hobby, something people do because they enjoy doing it. Does it matter that some people aren't into Star Wars Brickfilms. There are lots of people who like lots of different things, which is good. If it is something that you want to do, something that you will enjoy doing. Then do it. You can't please all of the people all of the time.

People won't get mad if you go away from the Republic/Clone Wars timeline, in fact, they would probably rather a different era since that one is over-flowing with animations already. Using either the Old, Old Republic (Which would get very pricey, very quickly.) or the New Republic (The much cheaper option.) would not only get you away from the Clone Wars, but it would allow you to use little-known characters and events to fuel your story. It would be easier to get away from the typical Droids/Clones, as well as all the canon, and non-canon stories already there. (Both Clone Wars TV-shows, Episodes 2 and 3, and the multitude of books.) Your own story would then mesh better with the established events, (A thing that I like) and allow others a glimpse into the Extended Universe.

I like Star Wars films, but only if they're well made, and have a good plot. (Both of which are unfortunately very rare.) Having lots of Lego sets and huge armies doesn't make a film good. If it has a good plot, and good animation, then there is no need for a gigantic battle scene. (Take Smeagol's Clone Trooper Down, for example.)

What would be neat is if the series concentrated on your original characters, then every once in a while brought in a more known person. (Han, Leia, Luke, Ect...) And while the plot may be influenced by the current events, (Whatever they may be) it was always an indirect influence, and only mentioned it to add more depth and scale to the story. And I have to agree with Mickey, the "Star Wars Scrolling Text" should be thrown out.

Re: A star wars series?

First off: General Film Discussion is an appropriate place for this thread, considering the discussion is centered around people's perception of Star Wars brickfilms overall, rather than one specific series.

Secondly, silents, if a Star Wars brickfilm is what you want to make, then go for it! It's best to make the films you want to see, rather than trying to appease someone else. That being said, there are a LOT of SW brickfilms out there and many of them are very mediocre. If you want to make a Star Wars short, just know that you're going to have to something pretty unique and/or impressive if you want to stand out.

That's not an advisement not to pursue your idea, but rather a suggestion to go into with eyes wide open. Whatever you decide upon, keep us posted here on the forums! mini/smile

Re: A star wars series?

One suggestion that still hasn't been implemented is focusing on non-Jedi, non-government aspects of the Star Wars Universe.  Bounty hunters, smugglers, pirates, spice runners.  Plenty of other aspects to cover beyond just lightsaber duels and troopers shooter at each other.

Re: A star wars series?

Mkay, i like the feedback, and have taken a ton of advice, im just gonna start writing down a story and make sure it doesn't conflict greatly with another story. I will write it, branch it off differently and look through it constantly to ensure it makes sense. No plotholes in my story.

Fun fact: there's a new series coming from Lucas Arts in 2014 called Star Wars: Underground. It's a parallel to the game: Star Wars 1313. There's little to none info about the serie, you can find a demo on youtube of the game. (see link)

This was also meant to Silent, since it's a fresh and different approach to the whole Star Wars universe. Maybe it can inspire you to make it different from all those other Star Wars brickfilms. Filmyguy and I made a short brickfilm a while back with a different approach to lightsaber fights (people still hated it, something with color correction).
