Topic: Canon EOS 550d (T2i) frame capture software

Hello There! I am..well..hopefully trying to be back from the dead in turns of my animating :/


I've recently got a iMac! Woo! Only thing is, I can't find a software to actually go with it, in terms of frame capturing. I tried iStopmotion, however it says that it's not compatible with it!

I don't really want to splash out on an expensive program like Dragon Frame, I was hoping for a smaller priced one...maybe...free?? Anyone know of any cheap frame capturing softwares that work with the T2i?

Well, I've always animated on a T2i and I'll offer what I do. It works quite well, if you have any doubts, check out some of my work.

Simply use the EOS Utility software that comes with your camera. It allows remote control of your camera from your computer. You then take the frames that you have captured and import them into Windows Live Movie Maker. Select all of the frames and change the duration to something like .04 or .05 depending on what frame rate you are going for. Price: Free. Works quite well for someone on a budget like me.

Hey,
Yeah that's what I'm doing at the moment, I was just wandering whether there was a more advanced way, with onion skinning and stuff.
But I guess it'll have to do!

Ah okay, I see. I'm the same boat as you at the moment. I haven't ever tried it, but does Helium Frog work with DSLRs? Perhaps I will go try it out and post my results.

EDIT: I guess it does not, because it didn't recognize the camera when I opened it up.

So... is there any way to get onion skinning with a T2i with out spending a pile of money? I could use that knowledge now, too.

Not that I'm aware of. I used EOS Utility for a couple videos but the program was really sketchy and crashed a lot, then compiled the frames in After Effects. I use Dragonframe now.

Honestly, f you intend to use a DSLR for stop motion, be prepared for some heavy spending.

If you're a student you can get Stop Motion Pro Studio HD for $120 USD, but that's the cheapest I've been able to find; not exactly cheap, sorry.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as everyone else in terms of trying to find a frame capture program. I have a Canon T3 and a Mac. Right now I'm using EOS Utility to capture and Quicktime 7 Pro to compile the frames into a video. It gets the job done, but it would be more convenient to have a program meant for stop motion.

For Macs, the only decent, not-too-expensive option that I've found is Boinx iStopMotion. They have different "flavors" (Home, Express, and Pro), but the cheapest is $49 and doesn't do HD.

I also think I read somewhere that EOS Utility has a built in onion-skinning feature, but I have yet to use it.

EOS Utility does? I did some research awhile back to see if such a feature was possible but didn't find much. Apparently they did update it and give the possibility of overlaying an image onto the live view shooting. It wasn't practical for onion skinning though cause you would have to change the image you overlay every time a new one is shot. Have the updated again? Perhaps I should look into that.

I have only Macs in my house and I was unable to find a good capture program that supported my camera (or that agreed with my wallet) so I ended up buying a remote control for my camera. I just shoot tethered, no computer, which means no onion skinning, but it's really not that big of a deal (at least for me). What I like is that shotting this way means I can shoot RAW without any problems or do bracketing for HDR (I want to do a stop motion using HDR soon). It has a lot of other benefits too, including the fact that I don't have to make space on my small animation table for a computer and that I can shoot whenever I want, not just when my parents dont need the computer. In my case, it's the cheapest, easiet solution I've found, and the cool thing is that remote controls like mine are also useful out of the studio (wildlife shooting, long exposures, etc)
Edit: maybe take a look at samanimation? Someone mentioned it the other day in similar thread, I don't actually know much.

Whoops, it is just a manual overlay feature. I just assumed it would be similar to onion skinning. I guess you could use that feature as a substitute for onion skinning if you had the time and patience to manually change the image every time.

Yes I use EOS and just hash it together in WLMM like Spider. Although, I have a quality problem. Has anyone had this problem?

Hang in there DWStorm, I recently (about 3 weeks ago) asked the Boinx forum people if they would be adding live view DSLR support to iStopmotion anytime soon. Well, they got back to me a few days later and said that they would indeed be adding support for DSLRs in the next update. And for the time frame of the update, they said to wait a couple of weeks for it to come out. It's been a couple of weeks, so it should be out soon! mini/delirium

I know a lot of you find iStopmotion not to be an option, but I use it with a DSLR and I like it a lot.
