Topic: I need a new Webcam Pro 9000 rig

Yup. Right now I'm using a rig based on Bodville's design, but I want a rig where I can do heavy camera tilts, which is near impossible with this rig. How could I make one?

Thanks!

Re: I need a new Webcam Pro 9000 rig

You could I use the cradle I built for my 9000.  I built it with a plate as a bottom so it can be attached to many different rigs on the underside.

You can see it at the bottom of this picture.  If you can't see how it's made from the picture, then I can take some up-close pictures of it for you.

Re: I need a new Webcam Pro 9000 rig

I had something like that in mind, like your's or Sean's rig, but what I want to know is how to make it sturdy during tilted angles, and how to have tilted angle camera movements.

Re: I need a new Webcam Pro 9000 rig

I'm on it.

This and this are the keys.  Get two of each, put them together.  Raise one on up on two bricks, put the other on two 1x2 jumper plates.  Put that on a plate, attach the camera cradle to the hinges.
I can take some pictures of what I built if you want.

Awesome, this will help a lot! If I have any more questions after I go try to build this, I'll let you know.

Re: I need a new Webcam Pro 9000 rig

Use technic gears. If you're hardcore enough.

Protip: The worm gear works wonders.

Totally.

I've been trying to make a good rig with Technic, but my problem is stabilizing it once I find a position I like...

Re: I need a new Webcam Pro 9000 rig

Try embedding a couple of technic beams in my rig design. That way the camera rig won't go anywhere. The trick then is to provide enough of a counterweight to balance the rig out. either that or simply keep the whole thing lightweight enough and slam it down on some studs - that should also keep steady enough.

Re: I need a new Webcam Pro 9000 rig

I've been using your s rig, but without a bigger rig I can't do good camera movements...

Re: I need a new Webcam Pro 9000 rig

Lies. Power most often lies in simplicity. What camera movement are you trying to pull off?

Re: I need a new Webcam Pro 9000 rig

Well, the main one I want is a circular motion, going in a O-shape with the subject in the middle of the O. Flat camera movements I can do without a bigger rig, but up/down/horizontal I can't - at least I haven't been able to figure anything out.

Re: I need a new Webcam Pro 9000 rig

My cradle completely encloses the camera, so it's balanced.

I use 0ldScratch's pivot rig design; which is a few tiles parallel on the baseplate with a 1x1 round between two of them.  The bottom of the cradle goes on top of the round.  Very useful for angles and panning.
This can also go under the tilt rig I described, allowing for tilted camera movement.

EDIT: Up-down camera movements can be done by moving the head of the camera itself, which can be done with my cradle by removing a few pieces.  Horizontal movements can be done by a combo of the up-down (hinge) and side-to-side (pivot) movements.

Re: I need a new Webcam Pro 9000 rig

For a circular panning shot, you could do it in a couple of ways. You could use some curved Lego rails to make a circular dolly for your camera. Personally, I prefer to put my entire set (if possible) on a lazy susan or other form of turntable and rotate the set rather than moving the camera. The latter technique opens the door for pulling off some cooler shots, too, with being able to rotate the set and raise/lower/rotate the camera separately.
