Also, sorry for the bad quality, my camera was out of batteries AGAIN so I had to use my iPod.

Re: Cinematography Challenge (Read Rules First)

OHMYGODTHATSAMAZING.
ANyway, I'll definitely enter this one (by that, I mean posting a picture)! I love the theme!

Re: Cinematography Challenge (Read Rules First)

Hilarious concept, terrible execution.

Come on folks, it's the cinematography challenge, not "take the funniest picture based on the theme" challenge. If this is going to be brought back (and I really hope it is), let's do it right.

Re: Cinematography Challenge (Read Rules First)

mini/sweat I found my camera charger. Should I make a better one? What do you think needs to be improved on mine? Just getting a halfway tolerable framing with my iPod camera was quite an ordeal.

EDIT: and I certainly agree that this is a good thread and we should try to revive it. I was hoping my entry would encourage more people to enter, I made it in about five minutes at the most.

Re: Cinematography Challenge (Read Rules First)

...CINEMATOGRAPHY Challenge, guys.

Re: Cinematography Challenge (Read Rules First)

Keep in mind, Cinematography is all about lighting as well. It will help get the feeling you want across. Your shot, Chiro, seems very dark and doesn't seem to go with the theme. But that's my opinion. mini/smile
Loving the fact that this challenge is back!

Re: Cinematography Challenge (Read Rules First)

I did it in natural light because i don't have a studio right now and its a rainy day so i used a lamp

Re: Cinematography Challenge (Read Rules First)

That's fine, but expect to have your photo critiqued. It's one of the main themes of this thread.

Re: Cinematography Challenge (Read Rules First)

Alright, here goes.

The composition of this shot is mediocre at best, bad at worst. The blocking of the mother and son is awkwardly shifted to the right, leaving a bit of negative space on the left that leaves the frame somewhat unbalanced. The angle you have selected is also fairly uninteresting: a long mostly-side-angle shot with the rather large gift awkwardly obscuring the boy on the right, not to mention framed a little bit too high (the boy has too much headroom). If he is supposed to be the representation of the "joy" in this frame, it doesn't do well to push him off to the side as you have done, he doesn't come across as particularly important or significant. A frame like this calls for a tighter shot at a much more expressive angle.

The lighting might be passable if you were attempting a nighttime shot, but in context of the theme and what I assume you're trying to get across, it works against the composition. It's far too dark to express any kind of sense of joy or elation. The window in particular calls for some specialty lighting (like a storefront window), or at the very least, some illumination to separate it from the foreground. As it is, it's so darkly lit that the mother's hair blends in to it, and the window/brick reflections are somewhat distracting.

Re: Cinematography Challenge (Read Rules First)

I'm not defending myself I'm just explaining the shot and the circumstances, I was using a really small set I had built for fun and then decided to use it in my Cinematography Challenge and I have no studio to use until we clean out the back room so I had to do the picture in the living room near a big window because my mom gets mad when I move the lamp and as I said before it was a rainy day and it kind of diffused the lamp and as for the shot it is supposed to be the mom giving joy and its in the evening, and that's not a reflection, its a Kleenex box mini/lol

Pay attention to this, people. This wall of text here is a gold mine cinematography wise. He's handing you tips like cheap cigars. Chiro, your response was well-justified, and I am not accusing you when I say this (just so we're clear); some people don't realize how valuable stuff like this is. Thanks to you, MindGame.

It's a good thing I somewhat forgot about this. LeegoFilms, you win. Your frame is very well done. Pick a good theme. mini/wink
