Topic: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

You may have come into the knowledge that I am a great fan of movies from the B grade; B-Movies.

So I decided we may chat vigorously about our favourite films in the particular genre. mini/mrgreen

Yeah baby here we go. Here are some of the more popular B movies that I like.

Bad Taste

Fun stuff man. Fun stuff.

http://www.badmovies.org/movies/badtaste/badtaste3.jpg

Vomit eating aliens invade Earth seeking to turn humans into intergalactic fast food.

Lovely film. Made me cry. Quite an emotional roller-coaster. Peter Jackson is legend.

The Evil Dead

Helluva gore ride. Edge of your seat.

http://www.badmovies.org/movies/evildead/evildead2.jpg

Evil spirits steal the souls from Ash and his camper friends.

Sam Rami's first movie, you know. Splashin' crashin' gore fest. There's a bit of a love story, but the dude chops off her head with a shovel.

The Blob (1958)

Beware of the blob, it creeps, and leaps; and glides and slides... !

http://www.badmovies.org/movies/theblob/theblob2.jpg

A true classic of the genre. Watch as Steve McQueen fights a hungry horror from outer space!

Great monster movie. What force may stop evil in Jello form?!

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

Yeah The Blob! I wouldn't call it a B movie, it's just old.

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

True that. Hm... I was looking through my collection for popular B-movies and that fell into my hands. It's hard to find popular B films. mini/tongue

Spiff up this thread with your own personal favourites.

(I don't have photoshop, so I had to use Word, which is why it looks so badly done)]

EDIT: Uh... It's not really that graphic.

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

It's from The Atomic Brain (1964), but I added the googly eyes and the Luigi. Why?

EDIT: Haha good one Danimation.

But can we get back on track?

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

What actually makes a movie a B-Movie?

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

Isn't "Airplane" a B-movie? I know that "Airplane II" is.

@Danimation, usually a B-movie has an easter egg hidden somewhere in the film, like the letter G, or the word pie, or a running gag that's hard to spot.

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

Just a warning - one more Luigi image and this thread might be locked for spamming images.

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

Why did you censor the images from jimmybob's original post?
And... can we do Mario pictures?

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

Well, technically, they're not "Luigi" pictures; I believe the proper term is "Weegee." mini/yes

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

My favorite B-movie is Manos: The Hands of Fate. Its cheesiness is unmatched.

MICHAEL: "That must be your master. Where did you say he was?"
TORGO: "He has left this world! But he is with us always, no matter where we go, he is with us!"
MARGARET: "No matter where we go...? I don't like this."
TORGO: "There is nothing to fear, madame. The Master likes you. Nothing will happen to you. He likes you."
MARGARET: "Likes me? I thought you said he was dead?"
TORGO: "No, madame. Not dead the way you mean it. He is with us always. Not dead the way you mean it. He is with us... always."
MARGARET: "Mike... I don't like this."
MICHAEL: "There's nothing to worry about, honey, it's only your imagination."

Wrong.

Hollywood films that come from the likes of Universal Pictures, Paramount, Warner Brothers, etc. make up maybe like 5% of the film industry. These are "A" movies.

"B" movies are films of the lesser known class. Usually films of incredibly cheap budget, and mostly films of the horror genre (I don't know why). Mostly their pretty sh*tty compared to Hollywood stuff, but sometimes you find that one gem...

Night_Owl: I have Manos on a $1 DVD but still haven't watched it. I gotta crack it out.

EDIT: Why are we censoring my pretty pictures? mini/confused

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

I heard somebody on NPR yesterday saying that a lot of modern movies, if you really look at them, are B-movies in essence. He gave The Dark Knight as an example: man dresses up as a bat to fight crime, including an evil clown, etc.

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

Is it really the essential plot, though, that makes it a B-movie?  Or is it the production values / writing / approach to the material?  I would consider Transformers to be something of a B-movie because although production values are high, the writing is cheesy and it plays like a B-movie with better special effects than real ones.  The Dark Knight, on the other hand, takes a relatively realistic approach even if the source material is pretty fantastical.

Anyway, I've always been a big fan of the Godzilla franchise.  I have collected all of them but one, now.  There are 28.

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

I'm not sure if it's really a B-movie, but I've always really enjoyed Dreamcatcher. The writing in it is certainly B-movieish and the plot is just bizzare, but I actually thought that visually it was quite good. I've always referred to it as a B-movie, but I don't know if it actually is one.

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade

Would something like Eagle Vs. Shark be a B-Movie?

Re: Favourite Selections of the B Grade
