Re: WEBCAMS OR DSLR?

@1011ev, Why not the C920? Just wondering.
@Briks, What I do is just put it on top of a stack of bricks with a smooth top, works well for me.

I'm not sure if it has manual settings. mini/confused

In addition to the basic settings I mentioned above, Logitech's Webcam Controller software also includes a Properties page with two additional tabs for Advanced Settings and Device Info. The first tab contains various settings that light up when you turn off RightLight, including exposure, gain, brightness, contrast, color intensity, and white balance, plus refresh rate settings for NTSC (60Hz) and PAL (50Hz). The Device Info page just contains version numbers for firmware and drivers. Turning off auto-focus lets you fix the webcam on specific people seated further away, perhaps around a conference table or on a living room couch, though the distant focus maxes out at roughly five feet; you'll want to move the webcam closer in larger rooms.

Checked around a bit, and it appears that it does.

Don't get a C920. If you are considering a 9000, get the C910. Just clarifying. mini/smile

EDIT: This wasn't really directed towards you, but Briks. mini/wink

why not a c920 though? isnt is just more updated from the c910? the tripod mount will come in handy too mini/tongue

See if it can tether to your computer, then you can take pics from the computer. That's how I made my latest videos, but I use a Canon PowerShot a520.  Most of the DSLRs tether.

No, just a simple USB cord should work. And you'll need some software, try Anasazi Stop-Motion Animator, HeliumFrog, or MonkeyJam. Did you get a CD-ROM with the camera? It might have some remote capture software on it.

Re: WEBCAMS OR DSLR?

I like webcamz.
I don't think that you can see the difference on youtube. unless your brickfilm is going to the movies, I would say that a webcam is fine. mini/yes

I would probably have a different opinion if I actually had the money for a DSLR. mini/tongue

Re: WEBCAMS OR DSLR?

My way of thinking has always been webcams for beginners, and then get a DSLR if you're serious about the hobby and willing to pay the extra money for the better quality. I know there are loads of people who started out with DSLRs, that's just my personal opinion, and I plan on saving up for a DSLR in the near future. I would be interested in a list of what good DSLRs are compatible with a live feed to HeliumFrog, if anyone has any insight into this.

kcirb-- its brick backwards.

Re: WEBCAMS OR DSLR?

I think that's one reason people go with webcams, because of compatibility.

not sure if it came with a cd-rom i'll check, and i'll look around for a chord & check out one of those softwares, thanks a lot mini/smile

Re: WEBCAMS OR DSLR?

If I was given a choice, I would get the DLSR. Yes, this may sound unreasonable, since a webcam does satisfy all of my need for brickfilming, its just that I may not be brickfilming at times. During this period, I would be able to use the dslr camera for other things, unlike a webcam, which can only go the lengths of the cord. This is what I do with my camera. I brickfilm with it, then when I put my sets and stuff away, I can go do other things with that camera.

Also, it seems as if all cameras reduce light flicker tremendously when compared to a webcam (for me anyways...)

Re: WEBCAMS OR DSLR?

fair enough, are digital cameras an option? because i have one and thats terrible, but maybe if i got a good one?

I've tried all three (DSLR's, webcams and digital cameras) and while you can argue about webcams over DSLR's, you shouldn't be using a digital camera for filming. Why? Because most digital cameras aren't compatible with tethering (Connecting you cam to the computer) and a lot aren't remote compatible either, leaving you to touch the camera when filming. Most digi cams also don't have manual controls or focus, which are imperative to brickfilming. If you were to find a digital cam with all of the above features, that's great! If not, then I would seriously consider purchasing either a webcam or a DSLR if you're dedicated (If you're going after a webcam, try either the C910 or 9000 from Logitech).

Re: WEBCAMS OR DSLR?

My suggestion is to work your butt off, save up the extra $ and get a DSLR. Here are the items that I would recommend getting:

Canon EOS Rebel T2i Body $500

8GB SanDisk SDHC Memory Card $16.95

AC Adapter for Rebel T2i $14.50

Remote Control $7.50

[video] Old Nikkor Lenses $YMMV

Nikkon > Canon Adapter $14.75

Rear Lens Cap $3.99

52mm > 77mm Step-Up Ring $3.99

Lens Cap [72mm] $1.50

Gray Card $9.95

Equipment Total: $548.90

Lens Total: $72.69 [assuming three adapters, caps, step-up rings]

Grand Total (not including Nikon lenses): $621.59

eBay search for SLR, manual focus, prime focal length, film, Nikon lenses

You can find TONS of good deals on eBay; just watch out for bad sellers & check how used the lenses are.

There are also some good deals on older, Canon FD lenses, though you will lose some light and have to get a more expensive adapter to use them.

Just some thoughts on how to get a (kind of) cheap DSLR kit going.

Re: WEBCAMS OR DSLR?

I got a Canon PowerShot a520, very cheap on eBay second hand, usually it's $375 and I got one second-hand for $70. It tethers. You can get a lot of things on eBay very cheap, if you search right.
