Topic: Lego legal.

I was asked and interesting question today by my brother one i was not sure how to answer. So I am hoping someone here could help me out. (IF THIS HAS BEEN ASKED BEFORE I APOLOGIZE FOR ASKING BUT I AINT GOING TO GO THRU HOW MANY POSTS TO TRY AND FIND THE ANSWER SORRY)
Once we purchase a Lego product be it set or minifigures, although Lego made the product what would happen say if any of us were doing say a buddy series and say someone wanted to pay us and broadcast it.
Would we be able to or not because even though we have bought the product it is still copyrighted to Lego?
Or would we have to get Lego's permission?
I guess the real question once we buy the product are we free to do as we wish with it without any legal backlash from Lego if they see you making money off it?
Just a question. Any answers would be great.

I've heard that Lego can be touchy with it's products being used for money in films, but I'm no source. I think you should ask Paganomation, he makes brickfilms for Lego and should know about this. You could send him a message via his youtube account. Just search Paganomation on youtube and you should find it.

You can do anything, just have fun while doing it.

Technically the Lego bricks would be patented, not copy-written, and in the US patents only last for 20 years, and once they run out the invention becomes public domain. Lego has been around for more than 20 years, so at least in America I'm not sure if they could do anything. However, Lego is based in Denmark, so I'm not sure if there is some law their which is protected by other countries that would make earning money off of Lego illegal.

The LEGO Company doesn't authorise any commercial use of LEGO unless it's to promote the LEGO product or for educational purposes. If you ask for permission from them giving any other any reason, they'll say no

Of course, you could always try to do it anyway and hope they don't notice...

Jericho (which I had never heard of before) looks like a pretty small deal. While it's not technically allowed, it's small enough for The LEGO Group not to notice and I'm assuming it fits well enough with their image. Bricklink is completely different, you can sell on your LEGO if you like.

We're talking about the DVD itself.
If it's legal or not to sell DVDs of your lego stop-motion movies and make a profit from it.

(Here's a DVD by Panganomation himself, although he doesn't use Lego minifigures, so this may not be quite the same.)

I'm not sure, but there are a number of people that do have DVDs of their work.
Mobiledeli was at least planning on it last year.

I think it's fine as long as everything in it is copyright free, but I may be wrong on that.

I read in BrickJournal that Arthur Gugick was hired to create a model of the Taj Mahal out of Legos, for a plot-point in a certain feature film. It's not stop-motion, but Lego was used, and I don't think Lego did anything. If anybody knows what I'm talking about please clarify because I sure don't.

I think as long as its your own story, design, theme etc. and there is no mention of LEGO or other copyrighted names, then it's ok, because you can't copyright a shape mini/tongue
That's my understanding of it anyway
