Topic: Videocamera for independent film?

I'm trying to work on getting into live-action and I'm in the process of writing a script for a psychological thriller called "INSANITY" at the moment. The big question for me is, I'm not sure what videocamera to use for the project. I'm mostly looking for a camera in the $1,000 - $3,000 price range. Currently I have a Canon T2i but i've asked some people and they said that wouldn't really work well for a full live-action project such as the one i'm working on. So what do you guys suggest for videocameras. I've been doing research on some Indie film cameras but the ones i've found are $4,000+.

Here is a list of some Professional Grade camcorders you can buy. The same site also has Tripods, Dollys, and Cranes.

DSLRs such as the T2i are really big in the indie scene at the moment. You're better off saving your money and using your T2i.

You can probably rent another T2i for a day of shooting for a 100 dollars or so. Save the rest for other production costs.

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

YEah you're better off saving your money. I'm looking into buying a canon 60D but I don't think it is that much better then the T2i.

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

If your thinking of live-action with DSLRs, which I highly recommend, go with the Canon 60D, 7D, or 5D Mark 2. The 60D has many more features for video than the Rebels. Such as Kelvin White balance, the ability to use White Balance shift for video and not just pictures(the Rebels can only use it for pics). The 60D is also great because of the articulating screen. Also the advantage to the 60D over the 7D and the 5D Mark 2 is the price. You can use that extra money to buy lenses. Prime lenses are your best bet and maybe a zoom telephoto(70-200 or 70-300). You'll find the primes' shallow depth of field very pleasing and well worth buying. Here's a tutorial series that will definitely help. http://learn.usa.canon.com/galleries/ga … ials.shtml

Keep your camera and buy lenses. Lots of them. Prime lenses are a must if your planning on filming in live action and like VanderFlame said they produce a very pleasing image.

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

Also I suggest that if your going to be doing any running shots or fast action shots, get the GoPro 2 Hero camera. We use the original GoPro camera, but the 2nd one is a better option because it's has more professional features. The GoPro camera has a wide angle lens and on the 2nd one you can choose to shoot at 1080p with the lens at 90, 127, and even 170 degrees! I even thought of doing aerial shots with it because it is so small...aerial shots with a powerful enough RC helicopter. Google that and see what people have already done with attaching a GoPro to a helicopter. The GoPro Hero 2 costs 300 bucks.

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

I'm stuck between the 7D, 5D Mark II, and 60D.

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

If you're not going to do a bunch of actual photography(as opposed to video work) you probably would go with the 60D. But if you want the full frame sensor, you should go with the 5D M2. It's a lot more money though and you could get two 60Ds for the price of one 5D M2.

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

I plan on doing a lot of video work, so should I go with 5D M2?

The 7D uses the same internals as your T2i.

Save your parents money.

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

Well if you want to go with that it's fine, but sometimes it's beneficial to have to cameras for different angles. But if your going to be doing some serious work, go with the 5D M2.

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

If you already have a DLSR I'd just stick with that (unless there is a good reason for needing a better one which is worth over a thousand bucks). They have some really fantastic quality, mine does, at least. It can take some lovely video.

Why not use it? Seems a waste of money to buy another camera...

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

Well compared to the 5D M2, the T2i's video quality is adequate.

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

Are you planning on getting the 5D Mark 2?

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

Yeah.

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

OK. I'll try to give you some suggestions on the best lenses and camera rigs when I'm able too.

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

I've used both the 5D M2 and the T2i, and there's not too much of a difference to be perfectly honest. The 5D has a lot more color depth, and I have to admit, it's nice to have in lowlight situations but it's not worth burning $2000. Besides, the 5D M3 might be coming out soon...

Re: Videocamera for independent film?

Where did you here that the mark3 might be coming out? Canon's already going to be releasing the new EOS-1D X in the spring. That's what they're focused on right now.

I've found out that to be able to use a camera in low light without sacrificing quality is a lot more vital than you think. YOU'll find yourself wanting to shoot more in the evening or in early morning because the light at that time of day is more pleasing and you'll want a camera that has good low light performance like the 5D M2. Trust me. I've found myself in the same situation. Check out this video and see how well the 5D M2 performs in low light. This video was made with very little to NO extra lighting.  http://learn.usa.canon.com/resources/vi … erie.shtml
