Topic: Graphics Cards

Hey guys,

I'm looking into to buying a new computer but I don't know anything about graphics cards. Any ideas as to what I should get? I'm planning on playing Portal 2 and some other weighty games on it so I was wondering which ones are better? Thanks.

So yeah, I'm back from my mind.

Re: Graphics Cards

NVIDIA makes the best graphics cards, but you don't need a good computer to play Source Engine games like Portal 2. On my laptop which has the Intel HD Graphics Family, I can run them just fine.

Re: Graphics Cards

Some games may run fine on a low end card, but if your really into gaming, buy the best you can afford!

Great you are getting a tower that will allow you to have a real graphics card. I have an NVIDIA GPU and I would highly recommend them. NVIDIA is the leading GPU company and they have deals with AutoDesk, Adobe, Valve and more companies for hardware acceleration with their GPU's. I have a GeForce GT 440 and it works great. Make sure your computer can run what ever graphics card you get. I have a GeForce GTX 480 which was one of last years top of the line graphics cards and I cannot use it in my computer because a it takes a kilowatt power supply. So do some research and make sure you get a good GPU for you.

Re: Graphics Cards

What about a NVIDIA Geforce G405? Also, I'm looking at a DELL XPS 8300 and an XPS 9100. Any ideas about whether they're good? No Mac comments please. mini/smile

Re: Graphics Cards

Oh, I've got a graphics card question:

Does nVIDIA make an external Graphics card?

I was looking at the website the other day, and I thought I saw one.

Re: Graphics Cards

Well, if you want to save MONIES, you could look into this, which has DVI, VGA, and HDMI (which is really cool if  you use it with a HDMI capable TV)

If MONIES is not an issue, the sky it the limit. Also, the best performance would be watercooled mini/tongue

Srsly though, I wouldn't buy a computer. Build one. I see your XPS 8300 and think "you could get a nice rig for $700." It's a lot better in the sense that you can customize it to your exact needs, be it gaming or graphic design. Hit me up through PM or chat and I could try my hand at design a rig for you.

NVIDIA is the leading GPU company

*sigh* For gaming, they are both the same unless you are getting something like a GTX580, HD6990 or GTX590(basically, extremely expensive graphic cards). They both have graphic cards that compete with each other at the same price point and performance. You have to look at GPUs that suit your budget. The above statement is very ignorant thing to say.

You will notice almost no difference between HDMI and DVI, the only difference is that HDMI carries both video and audio. Many GPUs have those output ports today, you should not judge a GPUs performance on the ports it has. In fact, the bottom-of-pile Intel integrated GPU on this laptop I am using has both HDMI and VGA.

You will notice a difference when I comes to companies design there software for curtain GPU's companies. Take Adobe for example they have software acceleration that only works with NVIDIA GPU's.

I said for gaming. Yes, I know that Adobe supports Nvidia, but that does not make Nvidia the leading GPU maker.

Re: Graphics Cards

I would say nvidia is the leading GPU maker, or at least one of the top ones.

Re: Graphics Cards

NVIDIA is great for games and video production, I use the Intel HD Graphic 3000, which is great for games as well, I play FIFA 11 and it is roughly 6GB of hard disk room and is very heavy on the processor, but my graphics card is great for it.  Just do some research on Intel and NVIDIA and find out how much dosh you'll need for the best graphics card for you.

Nvidia and ATI (AMD) both have GPU's that are made for games and video editing. Neither brand is "the best" for this or "the best" for that. ;)

Says who?

Anyway, you're going to have to give a price range Eddie.

Re: Graphics Cards

I think I'm gonna go with the NVIDIA GTX560 Ti. But if that seems like an over the top decision should I go with the GT 545 GDDR5?
