So what exactly does Lightworks do? I can't find a good explanation anywhere.

So what exactly does Lightworks do? I can't find a good explanation anywhere.
It is a video editing system, like Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas. 
So what do those do? 
I have no clue. Aside from what WMM does.
WMM is also a video editing program, though it's very basic. Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere are more advanced video editing programs that have more features than WMM. Lightworks is also a video editing program, and it's said to be better than WMM, though I haven't really tried it myself.

As far is I could tell, LightWorks is just built to be difficult.
I usually pick up the basic functions of a program the first time I open it, but with LightWorks, I was completely baffled.

If you've got experience with tough programs for example adobe after effects or sony vegas like i do, it should be easy. if you don't, then that's perfectly normal and you should just look at tutorials. just PM me if you need more help. 
Reading the user guides on the Lightworks website really helps.
And yes, it's better than WMM.
So... Would it be worth downloading it?

I know it's free. I guess there's no reason why I shouldn't download it, and see if I like it.
That's right. but it isn't capable of too much. it's just in beta.
if you want a really good free program, try WAX 2.0.
it works well and may have only, like, 7 effects, but if you combine them correctly, they can work great!

just look at tutorials, and it becomes easy. you can even do masking with rotomate tool!
If you have enough money, I think you should buy Sony Vegas instead.
