What I tried was shooting the scene in full light and putting a dark blue color solid over the film and lowering the opacity of the solid to make the scene look dark. Then I put an inverted four or eight-point garbage matte on the color solid so some of it showed through to the fully lit scene. Then I feathered the mask a lot. Hope I helped!
