Topic: Effects for a Storm?

At this very moment I'm working on a film that will need lots of effects, crucial lighting, and top notch animation, so here I want to has a few questions about lighting the set and the effects needed to pull it off.  First off, the scene is set in the middle of a storm, so flashes, lightning bolts and rain will be needed, I think I can do the flashes but do any of you know where I could get lightning bolts and rain?  I'm also in need of special lighting, the story call for a blue storm, I have a blue background and and lighting gels, except the gels aren't strong enough to project a dark blue color.

Help...  Please.

Re: Effects for a Storm?

Well, for lightning effects, first, shine a LED torch/flashlight into the set from some random angle every time you want a strike, it's basic, and does for some great and realistic lighting effects.

For the actual bolts, I'd suggest making them in photo shop. Maybe a Google search could find you a tutorial, if not, I'll try to find a good method for you, or add them to the frames myself if you wish. But it would be really really really cool if you pulled off some in shot bolts. That could be nice.

Now, for rain...
I'm not really sure. xD

For blue ish night lighting, I shine my lamps onto my huge blue day background. Combined with your blue gels, you could make it even more blue.

If you like, I could do the lightning, rain and puddle/ripple effects for you. mini/smile

Re: Effects for a Storm?

I find that flashing a light, then dimming it, then taking the light away works out well.

So yeah, I'm back from my mind.

Re: Effects for a Storm?

LED lights provide a good amount of light, use those for strikes.

Re: Effects for a Storm?

I just crank the exposure up for lightning effects, and then I make the rain effects in Squirlz water reflections.

Re: Effects for a Storm?

Can you get this Squirlz for Macintosh?  I looked around quiet a bit and I couldn't find one.  The only LED I have is my laptop.  ZP, I may have some work for you, just contact me in a PM if your available.

Re: Effects for a Storm?

Has anyone actually tried NOT using an overlay program like Squirlz to do rain effects? I'd personally love to see someone do some rain effects in Blender that actually seem to surround the characters instead of just being between them and the camera.

I have attempted to use Blender for rain effects, but I could never seem to make them look realistic.
