Topic: Making Sound Effects

In my latest video, I had to create my own sound effects. I couldn't find any online. I couldn't do anything like gunshots or anything, but I could make footsteps, landing-on-the-ground sound effect, and many more. I hooked up my Rock Band mic (Logitech) and recorded things lying around my house and edited them in Audacity.

My question is: Does anyone else make their own sound effects? I'ld love to hear some new ideas. I've only just started making my own and I need as much advice as I can get.

Re: Making Sound Effects

I heard ANP likes to make most of his sound effects.

Re: Making Sound Effects

I make sound effects myself, but only for the ones that I can't find a better version online of, and that I can realistically reproduce. However I'm surprised to hear that you wern't able to find many sounds online. There are plenty of free sound effects on the web, with my favorites being The Freesound Project, and  SoundJay, But a quick Google search of "(INSERT SOUND HERE) sound effect" should do. However remember that when using audacity to create sounds, voices, or edit ANY recording, ALWAYS use the remove noise feature. It produces incredibly more professional results, and can make a noisy household recording sound like it comes from a studio. For example, In my film "Blackout" All of the footsteps while inside the house was a recording of me knocking on my desk about 30 times. I seperated each individual knock in audacity and exported them as a seperate file. Then I sequenced them together to match the footsteps of the characters. Making you own sound effects can be a fun, challenging and innovative process, as you often can get suprisingly good sounds from unlikely sources. And WOW have I been rambling... Have fun recording SFX, bye!

Well, I couldn't find the right sound effects(probably because I wasn't searching the right thing). Thankfully, I edit my videos in the most secluded room in my pretty quiet house.

When creating a SFX, I recorded about 3-5 tracks. for example, I had to create the SFX of suddenly stopping running in gravelly terrain. I first recorded my fingers running through a box of brass brads for the gravel-y sound. then I smacked a rubber toy on my desk for a small "shoe" sound. Then I recorded dropping my backpack on the ground for some final "umph". So yeah, that's how I make my SFX.

I've made 3 when I was bored

Re: Making Sound Effects

Yes! mini/bigsmile For a very long time time I've wanted there to be a topic like this (I didn't make it myself because I thought there might not be enough people).

Anyway, I've been making my own custom sound effects for four years. I have a lot of experience. You can watch my videos and listen for yourself.

A big tip I have that's very important: always record many different versions of a sound effect if it is played a lot in a short amount of time. That way, it won't sound as repetitive.
Like when I record sword clashing, I have a dozen of them.

Feel free to ask me how to do any sound. mini/smile I like making annoying noises.

Re: Making Sound Effects

i make some of my own sounds, but usually i just get them from the freesound project.

Re: Making Sound Effects

I make about half of my sound effects (I also do all original music) but I only create my own when i'm not satisfied with what i've found. I get most my Sounds from Soundsnap.com

Re: Making Sound Effects

For my BRAWL entry all the sound of leaves rustling I recorded.  The reason I prefer to make my own sound effects is because sometimes you just can't seem to find that one sound your looking for,  plus it makes it easier to get a specific sound effect.  Let's say you needed the sound of LEGO tapping, that's not the easiest effect to find online so in this case it's far more efficient to make it yourself instead of run around the interwebs trying to find it.
