Re: Post your hardware and software!

I use:

2010 Apple MacBook Pro with 250GB RAM and 4GB Memory (correct me if they're round the wrong way) mini/cat
Canon MD205
5(!) lamps (2 daylight ones which I use now, two halogen ones which I don't use very much now, and an ikea LED one)

Apple Final Cut Express 3.5 HD
Istopmotion Express
Pixelator (cheap photoshop alternative which I'm buying the full version of when I get enough money)

Re: Post your hardware and software!

yeah they are switched
250GB of RAM is godlike and 4GB of memory is like 1000 songs only

Re: Post your hardware and software!

ACTUALLY.

RAM and Memory are one and the same. (RAM = Random Access Memory).

The 250gb is the amount of Hard Drive space.

Is the preview not the most important part?

Re: Post your hardware and software!

Like I said, the implementation of OpenGL is not that great in AE. A much greater gain would be had from more RAM. And no, previewing is not the most important part in most cases, including mine. I need the actual files to render faster so I can move onto other compositions.  That said, one of the gains I hear AE CS5.5 brings is being able to work on a comp whilst one is rendering, though obviously this would still chew up resources pretty heavily.

Re: Post your hardware and software!

I was looking to get more RAM in my computer.
I currently have 4gb.
How much more would be good, but not over the top?

Re: Post your hardware and software!

About 8GB should be fine for PhotoShop, Final Cut, After Effects, and anything else. However, if you have an old processor, Having more RAM wont really do much. Just keep that in mind

Re: Post your hardware and software!

It depends on what you're doing, ZP. 4gb is a fairly ok amount nowdays for casual use and work and it can handle most Photoshop jobs (I regularly do pretty hefty PS jobs on my Macbook Pro with 4gb ram).

Re: Post your hardware and software!

The limiting factor for me is rendering 3D scenes out of Blender.
My graphics card is a NVIDIA Geforce 8400 GS.
I have no idea if that's a good one, but it has 512MB of memory on it.
For After Effects, it seems to run pretty fast, but in Blender, it slows down.
Would additional RAM fix that, or at least speed it up slightly?

What's the point in posting the same thing twice?

Well, I know that.

It normally happens when somebody clicks the "Submit button twice.

Oh. That makes sense. mini/XD

It's called a double post. It happens occasionally when someone presses "Submit" twice.

I doubt you need more ram but it couldn't hurt. My brother uses Blender and AE practically all day and he said upgrading to 12gb gave him a little performance boost. Rendering is usually really processor intensive though. That's probably what you need to upgrade.
