Topic: Realistic 'Hand-Held Camera' Effect in Production?

Hey Guys,

For my next film, I'm using a 'Hand-Held' camera effect. How would I do this? I would prefer not to have to do it in post-production due to lack of programs that can do that. So ... any help?

Here's a small (very small) failed attempt.

Thanks Alot,
-Rob

MindGame just actually moves the camera, frame by frame, and is able to create a very convincing effect. I think he uses a tripod of some kind to control the movement.

Or you could just use camera shake in postpro.

So yeah, I'm back from my mind.

Keshen uses the same technique.

And yet that's how some people do it.

Including you apparently.  Obviously you have the program to make this effect.  The problem with your attempt is that it comes off robotic.  To me, it looks like a surveillance footage.  You need to make smaller and smoother movements with less keyframes per second.  Also try including rotation.

I had one, but I think I removed it from YouTube. Make the quality bad on purpose, and video and audio noise, make it go out of and back into focus, make rotation, and like Lech said,

Fancy pants made an enlightening video on the subject where he seems to explain it pretty well.

BTW, guys, sorry that this is kinda off topic, but how do people turn words in posts to links?

Probably there's a tool for camera shakes in your compositing or maybe editing software. For example, in After Effects you have the "Wiggle!"-expression which is very useful.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the advice, I'll work on these and I'm also creating a LEGO tripod thingy so I can rotate and move the camera on my set.

Also, taking the camera in and out of focus as it moves can create a convincing auto focus effect.

one thing i found hard to do with a camcorder is the fact that you have to manually focus, so you have to be careful about focusing

A Life? Cool! Where can I download one of those from?
