Re: Reputation Meter?

It seems from looking at this page, people aren't rating in the intended way. People, I may just be broadcasting my opinion, but I believe the intent is to give thumbs up it the post is constructive and offers a good point and a good overall opinion, or helps the community, don't thumbs down if you disagree with that person, otherwise, everyone will probably get in the negatives because everyone on here is different. This was made to help people think before they post , not turn everyone into uniform, nerve ridden nobodies.

Re: Reputation Meter?

Then perhaps the rating icons should be changed to indicate that, i.e. a button that says Helpful (+) and a button that says Unhelpful (-).  But not all threads are about helpfulness.

Re: Reputation Meter?

This might make more people post informative things for reputations, that could be good though.

Interesting concept, Staff bros

Re: Reputation Meter?

That's a great idea, Lechnology! I've seen some posts that were given a plus, yet they were just stating something, not being helpful or unhelpful. I think that's because people are misinterpreting the plus-minus thing. They could be thinking they mean "like" or "don't like", or "I agree" or "I disagree". Changing them to be labled what they really mean would clear everything up and let everyone know what this is really trying to accomplish.

Re: Reputation Meter?

You know, there are many forums with a positive 'reputation system' like I described. These systems are mostly built up on 'thanking' others for their posts. For example, if I write a helpful post there will be a button below that reads "Thank pacific for this post" and a text space below the signature where it says, for example, "User1, User2 and User3 thank pacific for this post". And in everybody's profile you can check out how many "Thank you!"s they have got. This kind of system is actually very encouraging.

What bothers me about negative ratings is this: my previous post got me -3, even though I'd consider it constructive as it adds perspectives to the discussion that weren't there before (even if noone agrees, doesn't matter). Now, I am a person who doesn't care about reputation but I believe there are many on here that would be put off by a -3. And then they would keep from posting things like that again because they don't want to lose rating. But it was constructive wasn't it?

Nobody can doubt the irrationality of the crowd. It WILL dislike some posts for no reason. Members could refrain from posting anything like their previously downrated posts again, even if those previously downrated posts actually were GOOD posts (good posts that were "crushed by "rating trolls"). In effect, those members would refrain from posting good stuff, because downrated stuff can have been wrongly downrated.

This post probably will get me -5, lol.

Re: Reputation Meter?

There's a lot of silly plus and minus action going on in this particular thread. I'm hoping the novelty will wear off in a little while and people will, y'know, only rate posts when it makes sense to do so.

Re: Reputation Meter?

You're right, Smeagol. But it when I look into the post-prod forum and see makerimages getting -4 for providing a tutorial on how to use MsPaint for chroma keying, and I look into the Releases forum and see a guy making a brickfilm and getting -6 for it, I'm asking myself: what for?

-pacific

Re: Reputation Meter?

I think that there are some people who just don't like makerimages. Obviously the people who up-rep older members' posts and down-rep noobs' posts. The people who don't ever consider his specific post and just down-rep him because they dislike him.

The guy who was releasing a brickfilm linked YouTube, but not his specific video on YouTube. Some people thought, "U made a n00bish mistake, I'ma gonna minus u!" Sheesh. Newer members make mistakes because they don't know any better. At least they could have done is tell them what they did wrong so they won't do it again.

That post you got a -3 on was probably minused by people who didn't agree with you.

Why all these things happen is because people misinterpret what the plus and minus buttons mean.

Call me paranoid, but I don't like the "reputation" part of this system. It seems too much like a popularity contest.

The concept of rating a post like they do on YouTube however, I really like.

EDIT: Also, I feel it makes the side bar feel cluttered.

Agreed. All I ask is that the reputation meter in the side bar is removed. I'm so ashamed. What am I doing wrong? mini/sad

Re: Reputation Meter?

The point is, one can't expect those people to stop "misinterpreting", how you call it. And so I think the system is useless. Happy downrating.

Re: Reputation Meter?

Why is Golden's rep so low? He's generally quite well regarded on the site.

Re: Reputation Meter?

I think that it's a good thing to have, it's just sad that some (many) people can't use it right.

Lol, you sound like you're talking about communism.

Re: Reputation Meter?

This seems silly. I doesn't look like it's improving anything. I agree with everything KinzCove said.
