Topic: Western Brickfilm

So, after watching "American Outlawed" I decided that I want to embark on my own short feature.  And after a day or two of thinking of a basic plot I decided to make a western film.  So, what makes a western film, a western film?  What makes them entertaining?  And most importantly, how can I keep my film original from American Outlawed?

Feedback would be nice.

EDIT: I just turned this into my update thread for the film.  Renamed "Western Brickfilm"

Re: Western Brickfilm

A film about a ghost horse out West who is guarding a long lost hidden treasure.

Re: Western Brickfilm

Well I could base my story around that.  Nice suggestion, it leaves me with lots of room to fill in (Which is good).

Re: Western Brickfilm

I don't know much about what makes a western film a western film in a script, since I basically find an idea and work my way with it during production, but I do know that the editing and voice acting can help a lot. When you get voice actors, be sure to ask them to try and produce a 'western accent'. This will most definitely make the view seem like they're watching an actual western.

For during production, a well attribute to add is a tumbling weed out in the distance. Don't get lazy and put in your film what you have. If you don't have, for example, a cowboy torso, make a decal or even find one. Maybe even a scarf (as seen in this photograph).

In post production, I highly recommend you find dust particles to edit in afterwards. If you are willing to put in the effort of all this, I bet you will come out with a professional looking project that I can't wait to see. Hope this helped in the stages after pre-production!

Re: Western Brickfilm

Originality will come with the plotline, as long as it is your own story, your own characters, you have an original-ish brickfilm.  (true originality is almost impossible to find.)  To make it a western; music, sunsets, showdowns, gunfights, bandits, sheriffs, bars/pubs, small towns, horses, cacti, cowboys, turtles (maybe not turtles), and such.  Implement some of those, with a good plot, and you have a western.  YIHAA!!!

Re: Western Brickfilm

Mason - I like the decal idea, of course I'm not rich, like I said.  And I'm not a fan of asking for money so decals could be the way to go.  Also, on your recommendation for dust, yes, I do think it's important that I have dust in some scenes, however this isn't a sandstorm so I want to keep it realistic.  Voice actors, yes, I might get people from BiM to do some of this, but I'm hoping that I can get people at my local A/V Club to voice act because I'm pretty lame at voice acting.

BWJC - Maybe My Little Pony should have a short sequence.  Nay.  But yes, I'm going to talk over characters and story (Which is the hardest part) to make this an original film.  As for the small but important details, thanks!  You answer my topic of "What makes a western a western".  That's what I wanted.  Although do you think gold mines should be included in this?  Because what were these bandits always after?  Money.  So bars, pubs, and gunfights would be a very important element.

To Readers - I don't want ghosts since Vande is making "Ghost Town".  So I need to base this on real life.  Not real life events but I want a realistic fantasy.  So if anyone has to know any article I can read about western bandits then it would be helpful.

Gold mines could work!  And, really, making fun of the ponies. tisk  mini/tongue

Re: Western Brickfilm

It helps to spend some time watching live-action westerns. I'm pretty sure Doug got inspiration from some to make America: Outlawed.

My western brickfilm borrows aspects from a lot of well-known westerns; such as revenge, greed, etc.

Some suggestions: Once Upon a Time in the West, The Magnificent Seven, Hondo, Red Dead Redemption

Re: Western Brickfilm

I'm defiantly going to watch some movies.  I still need to learn the basic concept of westerns.  Then I can begin to form a screenplay.  I already have an idea that I could add Native Americans in this.  They could have a big role in the plot, although I don't want to fall into any plot holes.  Today I'm busy in the Twin Cities so maybe on Monday I can drop by my library and see if they have anything.  (My local Mr. Movies is dead.  mini/sad )

EDIT: Golden, surely you don't mean this:

Re: Western Brickfilm

I've never actually seen a "proper" Western film before. He he
Only things I have seen are things like Back to the Future Part 3, Rango, and random scenes from other movies and TV shows which play on it.
I'm probably not the best to ask. xD
(BTW Rango is an amazing movie, seriously.)

Though, I do have an idea for a Western brickfilm that I may make eventually called "Italian Standoff: a LEGO Spaghetti Western" which is basically filled with parody and really random weird humor.
Regardless of that, I still want it to have a good Western story, so I'm sort of wondering the same thing. xD

Re: Western Brickfilm

So, today I set out on a quest to find a plot.  It took me 7 and a half hours to find it.  Now I need to make an outline if anyone with a history of making good stories could talk to me that would help.  I work better when I talk it over with people.  Also I will get Shanghai Noon, watch the Long Ranger (17 hours of it) and Cheyenne.

PLOT SOLVED!

EDIT: Just changed this into my update thread.

Re: Western Brickfilm

Do you need me to help with the plot? I'm great with stories.

Re: Western Brickfilm

I don't know if this is your type of film...  I may just go ahead now, make an outline and then edited it.

EDIT: I need a name for my bandit.  At the moment I'm using "Clive" although hopefully that's just temporary.

Mmm... I'm probably not the best for Western names...
I had a Western styled bad guy in How to Not Rob a Bank, his name is Gohgzvoqsterwazootuli. I don't think you'd like a name like that. xD

I'd suggest taking some name which doesn't really sound extremely cool on its own, but add in a nickname with it.

Like "Stinky Clive" Or "Clive the Bull"

Okay, those are very bad bad examples, but you could come up with some cool names with that.

I particularly liked the name of the bad guy in Rango "Rattlesnake Jake" Which isn't exactly a nickname since he is a rattle snake, but it sounds like one. xD

Re: Western Brickfilm

Well I'm nearly done with my Outline, I'll accept 3 people to help me make it better once I'm done.  By "Help me make it better" I mean edit it with me.  And you'll be on my credits as executive producer.

EDIT AGAIN: I'm thinking of calling my bandit "Lone Wolf" or "Dan Williams"  How do they sound?

Re: Western Brickfilm

You should name the bad guy "Bloodtooth" and the nice guy "Flint Easthood" mini/tongue

but seriously, I think Bloodtooth sounds awesome. Good luck with this film.

Why are you looking at my signature?
Mod edit: Your signature started it.
... Oh yeah.
