Topic: My Resignation

Effective immediately, I am resigning from the review panel (or more accurately, I resigned over a month ago but didn't bother to post this publicly until now).

This is partially due to my inability to continue to perform my duties. A number of new commitments leave me no time to visit a website dedicated to making films with children's toys.

However, my decision is also largely linked to my increasing disappointment with the direction of the site. The target audience for brickfilms has long since shifted from "other BiM members" to "YouTube," and with this, BiM as it used to be died forever. The old BiM was a small community of filmmakers producing large-scale projects and critiquing each other's work. Now, things like view counts and subscribers and the Partner Program have enticed most brickfilmers to churn out a neverending stream of one-minute "comedy" shorts rather than attempt to produce anything substantial. Any sort of critical analysis is practically impossible.

The review panel (as it exists currently) is no longer needed or even wanted. The world at large is the target audience for brickfilms these days, not a select group of critics, and I feel the community should be the ones sifting the wheat from the chaff. With this in mind, I have recommended that Sméagol replace the current review system with one that uses a film's public rating to determine its "recommended/all films" designation. If and how he decides to implement this change is up to him.

Lastly.... this is not an "I'm leaving" thread, though it is an "I'll be around a lot less" thread. I plan on continuing to help out wherever I can, including contest judging if asked. You're not quite rid of me yet.

Re: My Resignation

I tend to agree with the critiques here, yeah.  There aren't many films posted here that I enjoy anymore.

As far as the review panel itself is concerned, we're definitely going to try to rework it in the next couple of months.

Anyhow, thanks for all your contributions to the site and directory over the years.  By far the most active reviewer, guys.

Re: My Resignation

Noodle is right, the target audience has changed. I personally want to make a film to impress the members and will once I fill out this blasted BrickLink order and start to script. I am willing to "Audition" for the review panel, but I will miss your reviews Noodle. In my opinion, this should be taken as a note to all brickfilmers on the site that this is what happens when YouTube becomes the objective and the community is left on a shelf for an afterthought.

Re: My Resignation

Noodle was the most dedicated reviewer BiM has yet seen, and a very special man. We will miss him dearly.

Our condolences to the family.

Anyway I do agree with Noodle; the Review Panel in its current form is outdated and hardly a necessity. At best it exists as a tool for adjusting the status quo (I mean really, judging by the inquires we occasionally get from people who have submitted, you'd think acceptance into the directory came with a free Bugatti Veyron), and it could be so much more than that. I'm interested to see where we go from here, and hope the next stage in reviewing does manage to incorporate more community involvement for the lower level films, along with a better system for working with films that really require a more in-depth examination for the review to be effective.

You will be missed Noodle, I have read many a review by you.

Re: My Resignation

Thanks for the hours you've put into this site, Noodle  I've long held you personally and your work reviewing in high regard. I wish you the best in your future endeavors.

Re: My Resignation

I am sorry to hear this, Noodle, as you were quite reviewer. I enjoyed reading your reviews, as they were helpful when deciding whether I should watch a certain brickfilm or not. I am happy that you are not completely leaving the site. You are a great member, and one to be missed dearly if you ever do leave.

I do agree with you on the state of not just BiM, but the entire culture of brickfilming. It was once an art that was beautiful, but has been tarnished by the Partner Program and the desire to make a quick buck. I believe I speak for most of the community when I say that the art of brickfilming is already dead. It has been buried by too many 30 second shorts that deliver a short punchline. Sure, they're entertaining, but there is no real effort put into it. Even Egyptian Holiday could have been much better than it is.

I bid you good luck, Noodle.

Re: My Resignation

I think people are wishing for far too much. You expect us to create masterpieces in every brickfilm we make? And sure, every film could be better in some way. Most people don't have time or will to create some magnificent artistic film.

Re: My Resignation

We're not asking for epics like TCOTY or The Magic Portal, but constantly producing things like this by amateurs, or even things with little to no storyline by animators with known ability to make future classics.

And, no Brickfilming isn't dead YET. But over the past few years, it's taken some serious blows. In fact, I honestly can't remember the time we got any real publicity (which, in a way, was a major reason we're in this state to begin with). Hopefully, we won't get the huge rush of new animators we've seen in the past few months

Re: My Resignation

You have stated your situation eloquently and I agree with you almost entirely. I personally still read reviews and I would hate the day they stopped.

For what it's worth: Thank You.

Re: My Resignation

This isn't YouTube, so I think editorialized content should always be a part of a niche community like this.  I want to probably cut down significantly on the number of films that the panel is expected to review, as well as the number of panel members, we've been discussing ways of doing this for a while now.  I'm not really dying to get more suggestions as I feel sort of flooded with them and a lot of times they're things we've tried that didn't work, but if anybody has articulate, specific ideas of how they think we could improve this situation, feel free to share them in this thread.

Re: My Resignation

You will be sorely missed, Noodle. You were the most active reviewer by far. Someday, I hope you come back. I'm trying hard to convert the Community to originality, so it should be a little easier on reviewers in 10something years. Your contributions and honest reviews, again I say, will be missed terribly. Thus ends my epitaph-rant-thingy.

Re: My Resignation

BiM as it used to be died forever

Personally I think we're in a transition point, where the older members are leaving, either more college or to get on with the rest of their lives, and the new members are emerging. Obviously this is tough, given the fact that the site loses much of it's maturity and quality whilst going through this face, but give a year or so and I'm sure we'll be starting a new 'golden' age. And after all, I'm sure we're all the same when we first started - simple shorts to satisfy ourselves. Admittedly YouTube has corrupted this system to an extent, but in my book it hasn't effected this site all that much.

In any case, it's with much regret I watch you leave. You've contributed many reviews to the panel and thus have been a great help to the site.

Bye.

A brickfilming Renaissance eh? mini/wink

Anyways, although I personally didn't know you Noodle, I have read many of your reviews on this site and will miss you.

I also agree with your statement about the condition of this site, with so many immature new members coming in at once posting their "Lego movies" sort of out numbers any of the good animators.  But as Onion mentioned, I'm sure that soon brickfilms in general will get better (and worth reviewing).

We'll miss you. mini/smile

Re: My Resignation

Just wondering, Does anyone consider me one of those silly immature new members making lousy movies? mini/what

Heck, NO!

I feel bad that Noodle is resigning (I include myself as a major part of that); I respect his contributions to the community, and I believe that my posts and such have played a part in his resignition and I apologize for that.

Noodle made some great reviews, but I am against people reviewing when they have not made a film themselves. Now, forgive me if I am wrong, but Noodle has yet to create a film.

Wrong. Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong.

You don't need to make a film in order to critique one.

Re: My Resignation

Why are you against people reviewing if they haven't made a film? You don't have to be a filmmaker to know what you like and dislike. It's almost like using the "Lets see you do something better" argument.

Anyway Noodle, didn't really get to know you that well mini/sad but you've done good work on the site and will be missed.
