Topic: Character development

hey all mini/bigsmile

I’m having trouble developing my characters and was wondering what do you do to give your characters unique, distinctive voices and personalities? Do you write bios for you’re characters? Also how much slang and lingo is too much?

So how do you develop you're characters?

Re: Character development

Well, knowing the past of your character surely helps. From that, you know why does he acts in a certain way, what does hurt him, etc...

Re: Character development

I spend a lot of time with my recorder recording lots of voices and annoying noises (that's where I got the name xD) Often times I just think of characters and scenes and act them out vocally with my wide range of voices. Usually ending up with a lot of weird people with very unique types of voices. Most of my characters are just really odd with strange voices, which is usually fun and amusing for my films, giving it a bit of a cartoony feel.

Re: Character development

The main thing about character development is personality. What adjectives describe your character? How would your character act in a given situation? Say that one of the adjectives that discribes your character is lazy. If that charater was told to take out the garbage, he would still be sitting on the couch 10 minutes later. Since the character's actions relflect his personality, it is important to know what the character would do in any situation.

About the charater's voice: It should reflect the character's appearance and personality. The primary one deciding what the character's voice is like is the voice actor who voices him. Whatever the actor thinks that the character would sound like is what the voice turns out to be. The character's creator should have a general idea of what the character would sound like (the general pitch or accent, for example), the voice actor's interpretation is what affects the outcome the most. Besides, the creator should have an open mind about it, having an exact idea about what you want is way too limiting when you try to get someone to voice the character.

Not literally dead, just no longer interested in Lego or animation.

Re: Character development

one screen writing book said that you should ALWAYS know more about the Character then the viewer does, think of it this way, your from the future and have read this guys Diary(yes I am and Have) you(as the screen writer) come back to watch how he deals with a situation. you know everything about him, that way you characters should come across as deep and real. have teasers, don't reveal everything but just enough.

Stalker!...
Kidding...
All I have to say is that Jungian Archetypes are your friend, and I would also suggest for you to even base your characters on people you actually know in real life. That's all I know that hasn't been posted previously in the topic.
