Not to be a snob, because I haven't seen Gerry, but usually when you see a film like that, it means your expectations (for instance, that an act of violence should be psychologically motivated) are wrong, not that the movie is worthless. Then again, I can't judge. I've seen films that have really long scenes that are really interesting and meditative. The point is precisely that nothing happens; it's not that the filmmaker is somehow stupid.

When you write

Fans of the movie would say that at this point we are forced to analyse the shot and concentrate on the characters emotion.

that's not necessarily what they would say.

The Spongebob Squarepants Movie

Just as funny as I remember, and I get more of the jokes now. mini/tongue
Love David Hasslehoff's appearance, this whole movie is just genius. I especially love the part where they get drunk on ice cream.

And, the cartoon faces they make throughout the whole movie are just hilarious.

I walked into the movie with no expectations. I knew it was 'artsy' (although its not), and I tried to see it from different points of view. Later, when I hated it, I read reviews to see what fans of the movie got out of it and I used the phrase 'fans of the movie would say' because that's the biggest defence for the movie (although very few fans dont explicitly say why they like it - which in my experience is not a good sign. I could do entire essays about my favourite movies - but I guess there is a 'revolution' trying to 'overthrow' me) and also shows that I dont agree.

The point is precisely that nothing happens; it's not that the filmmaker is somehow stupid.

Why make a movie where nothing happens? Maybe I'm just too 'mainstream', but I dont understand what is the point. If I wanted to watch a movie where nothing was happening, why dont I just turn my TV off and stare at the blank screen for 90 minutes? (Although, I'm pretty sure critics would still be able to draw interpretations from it that the Director would have never dreamed of) I get that its supposed to be interesting because such a thing is rarely seen, but I personally got nothing out of it. I was not thinking about my complaints when watching it, but I tried desperately to read the movie in another way beside "STOP WALKING IN SILENCE!!!" Maybe I just thought the premise could have been excellent for a dialogue driven character study...

I will admit that I may not 'understand' this movie, I will admit that I am not the most intelligent person in the world, and I will admit that I'm probably well out of my depth trying to criticise art-house cinema. But I believe I tried to watch the movie with a fresh perspective, and just didn't buy into it.

I think its the same reason I dont like most modern art (some of it is really interesting though - I've been to several modern art galleries around London). Someone takes a crushed car and paints it yellow - as much as I try to see it in different ways, I just see someone getting paid thousands to borrow a crushed car and spray-paint it yellow. I could do that! The same way a person can just film two people walking with only one-page of dialogue. Heck, apparently nearly all the movie was improvised! And then some snobs go and breathe so deep into it that they could make anything seem like legitimate thought was put into it. It reminds me of what Robert Rogriquez said: "Just make the movie in Spanish and everyone will think its an art-house movie!"

Heck, its the same way I hate Literature scholars completely over-analysing Shakespeare (although that may be because I actually like Shakespeare and wish other people my age did, but hardly any do since having to write essay after essay picking apart every single line completely turned them off)

The Blues Brothers

Wow.
This movie never seemed to stop wrecking cop cars.
For example, toward the end of the movie

Spoiler (click to read)

There were at least thirty cop cars that crashed, and made a perfect barricade.

Anyway, I absolutely loved this movie.

Well, I agree with anything you say, but that kind of argumentation fails when talking about modern art. Why did Fontana get paid for ruining canvas, while if you do that you just wasted a lot of money? Cause he did it first. Anyone can do it, but he was the first. It's kinda like Christopher Columbus: when he got back to europe, immediatly all the ships went to the new continent to colonize. Another thing, in modern art, they do art with junk, but it has a specific purpose, may be it a critique to government, or describing the human situation... well, I'm making these up, actually, I have no idea. But what I want to say is: when you say "I could do that too", you have no purpose to do that, if not to say "it's easy to do, even a child can". About the movie, I haven't seen it, but I agree with night owl. Still, I love your rants. Keep it up.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

DRIVE ANGRY

Certainly a movie where Nicolas Cage doesn't annoy me which I guess is good mini/smile Amber Heard is smokin' hot and she's definitely worth checking out well and the movie is worth that too LOL mini/bigsmile

Drive Angry is an action movie, it's almost like a parody of action movies it has lots of cliches but if you're not expecting anything too serious you should check this out it is entertaining!

By "nothing", I mean few events; I'm just saying that certain films can play with the perception of time. Gus Van Sant copied his style from a Hungarian director named Béla Tarr, so check out his stuff. Werckmeister Harmonies is quite good.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

X-Men: First class
Enjoyed this a lot. All characters were nicely developed, good acting, directing. I used to really be into Superhero movies when I was younger, this made me feel nostalgic again. My favourite X-men movie, I think. I hope for a sequel. Michael Fassbender was definitely the best actor in this.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Max, would you mind not putting spoilers in your reviews without a warning next time? I was interested in seeing Gerry, and you dropped a big ol' spoiler right in the middle of your review. Thanks.

If you insist. Honestly, I think it would be better watching the movie knowing what happens.

Hmmm, looks quite interesting. I see what using extra-lengthy shots can achieve - I just thought that 'Gerry' overused it in every meaning of the word. And it looks (from that trailer) as though it might work better in an urban area than in the desert. I will definitely check that out....

Dude (and to anyone else who considers me a troll) if you dont like my reviews (although they are mostly just me writing in a similar style as how I would discuss them), just ignore them. If you consider me a troll, do what everyone else does and ignore the troll. You have the ability to just continue scrolling down past my posts...

I hate to pull the 'right of free speech' card, but, yeah - I am perfectly entitled to say what I thought of a movie, and I dont think 'Gerry' deserves an analytical review when its the most pretentious movie I have ever seen.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Reminds me of Daft Punk's Electroma, which also has an incredibly long sequence of characters walking through a desert, although that movie was quite good. Things happened.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I like reading your rants, Max. And I enjoy knowing that there's still people left who are critical of movies, and people who are not afraid to disagree with the critics.
