In GIMP add a stock photo of a muzzle flash with the screen layer settings on top of were the gun is. Then erase around the guy with the feathered brush on the flash layer and save.

So do you want the muzzle flare to be obstructed by an element from your footage?  If so you can do that useing the roto-brush tool in AE CS5, it's not to hard to ge the hang of.
