Topic: Fake Water

Yeah. I need some ideas to use for fake water. Help?

EDIT: I think we really need this, so discuss fake water ideas and share with the community!

Re: Fake Water

Depending on how you want the water to act, clingfilm can look great.

Re: Fake Water

Once I animated with real water, it worked sort of OK...
In what context are you using it in? a waterfall, or just like a pond or something?

What are you using it for? Need more context.
Real water is the way to go imo.

Re: Fake Water

Nope. Can't do real water. I have an idea sort of like a stream. Sort of like this.

Re: Fake Water

When I do water, I just have blue LEGO. mini/tongue Though, I saw something Crazy Ed did that really made me wish I'd done it that way in Pirates Rule! Which was done with some blue plates, and he had some transparent studs randomly set on a couple spots of the ocean, then he just picked up the studs and put them back at a different angle but still on the same part of the board in every shot. This gave the ocean a nice glimmer effect.

Re: Fake Water

You can also cut a plastic bag and crumble it up. You gonna have to tape it on the edges. You can put a mirror or something reflective under that, so it can look better. mini/smile

Re: Fake Water

CGI?
Faking the look of a body of water in Blender is fairly simple.

Use the Night Owl trick and use foil.

This looks like it was just a mirror with some kind of spray on it. Maybe something like hairspray? mini/tongue

It's actually aluminum foil.

Golden, I think you should stick to aluminum foil, because you can control it easily. If you really need some inspiration, watch The River (Which I'm already sure you have).

Re: Fake Water

Okay, then, aluminum foil it is. I think I'll make this topic a discussion of water FX because we really need it. Seriously.

EDIT: After some very messy experimenting, I have come to these conclusions:

  • Lego walls can't hold water

  • Lego walls can't hold soap

  • Soap Sticks to Lego

  • Food coloring takes a heck of a long time to wash off

What do you think was used in this?

Re: Fake Water

I'm planing on making a test possibly sometime after I complete my current film with a technique for bubbling goo. Which isn't water, but like water somewhat.

Re: Fake Water

There is another thread like this....

New sig coming soon...

Along with brickfilms...

Re: Fake Water

Like WelcomeToAwesomeness said Sqirlz Water Reflexions is a great and simple free programm that can create really cool looking water in Post-production.
Here's a tutorial for brickfilms: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuLlMlXIu34&

Glass or plastic perhaps? I'm not sure, could be something else but I think it's that.

Aluminium foil looks really cool and realistic. But it could be difficult with lighting, it's so reflective. I use blue card sometimes and that works fine. Or if you actually want a moving stream this guy uses real lego quite good (about 1 min 45 secs in).
I've also used Sqirlz water reflections too, but unfortunately it's not mac compatible (which is annoying).

But if you're just using a still pond or something than my advice would be to use foil. If not, I'd say blue card with white bits in it for waves or something.
